We all have a special token which we can use to level up.
~ Princess Bubblegum explaining character resources in Candy Cornered

Star level is a game mechanic in Bloons Adventure Time TD. It is a progression system that is used to unlock upgrades, permanent boosts, and additional ally and trinket slots for characters. Star levels are raised by spending character resources,[1] which can be obtained through various means.

Overview[]

All characters start at star level 1 with one ally slot and two trinket slots. Star levels can be raised for characters by spending character resources, up to star level 10. The amount required to raise a character's star level increases exponentially with each level—fully leveling a character up costs a total of 641 character resources. Likewise, the bonuses gained from leveling up become more significant with each level, with later levels unlocking stronger upgrades and permanent boosts, and level 10 unlocking several bonuses at once.

Character resources[]

There are 12 types of character resources, each corresponding to one of the 12 "base" characters, with the 6 "alternate" characters such as Juggernaut Max and Warrior Bubblegum using the same type of resource as their "base" counterparts. The types of character resources are:

Sources[]

Character resources can be obtained as a reward from a variety of sources. The type of character resource rewarded is usually random, and it is possible to obtain resources for characters the player has not unlocked yet. Random character resources can be obtained from the following:

  • Earning a new medal on a map
  • Earning all medals of a certain difficulty in an Adventure
  • Completing a game on a map under the influence of the Bloon Beacon
  • Earning achievements
  • Completing daily quests
  • Protecting a box at the end of the track during the Fireworks Fun!, Hall-ooo-ween, and Holly Jolly Secrets Events (not Joshua and Margaret Investigations)

Pre-determined character resources can be obtained from the following:

Cosmic Essence[]

Cosmic Essence is a unique resource that can be freely converted to any type of character resource. It is sometimes obtained in place of a random character resource, but it is also rewarded in small amounts from Daily Rewards. Like character resources, it can also be traded for with the Martian Trader. It is also a possible reward from Legendary wish orbs. Note that from the Martian Trader and Legendary Wish Orbs, it gives half or a third of the amount of cosmic essence compared with other character resources, so it is advised that if a player wants character material, they spend crystals or choose a character material for a character they want directly instead of choosing cosmic essence.

Level bonuses[]

Permanent boosts[]

Each character receives a permanent upgrade at levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10. The upgrades at levels 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9 all boost one of the character's base stats, while the upgrade at level 10 is unique to that character and is generally much more powerful. For example, Max's level 10 bonus allows him to throw an extra dart per shot.

Upgrades[]

All characters unlock new upgrades at levels 3, 5, and 7. The upgrade unlocked at level 7 is usually one that accesses a powerful Activated Ability.

Prior to Version 1.4.1, increasing the star level of a character would also improve most upgrades for that character, instead of granting permanent upgrades. For example, Captain Cassie's Grape Shot would fire more grapes at a time per star level. However, despite the patch notes claiming that "all star boosts have been removed from upgrades" for all characters, some upgrades still have level-dependent effects.

Items[]

Characters gain additional ally and trinket slots each time they level up. Ally slots are unlocked at levels 3, 5, and 10, while trinket slots are unlocked at levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10. Additionally, all weapons' stat bonuses scale with the star level of the character they are equipped to, which can be boosted further with the Monkey Academy Degree. Prior to Version 1.4.1, some trinkets' effects scaled with the level of the character they were equipped to as well.

List of star level bonuses[]

Note: when a character receives a permanent boost that is stated to affect "Base Attack Speed", it actually reduces the attack cooldown by the listed amount. Because cooldown is the inverse of attack speed (measured in seconds per attack instead of attacks per second), the effective bonus to attack speed differs from what the game's text implies.

Strategy[]

For acquiring character resources, early on, the best source of character resources is completing maps of the same difficulty in the same adventure for a large chest at the end of each Adventure. When all of these chests are exhausted, the only methods of acquiring character resources are Bloon Beacons, daily quests, playing a featured map during an event, protecting a crate in the featured event map during specific events, or spending Martian Crystals. Out of all of these sources, the most efficient method is protecting a box and completing the featured map on impoppable during the Fireworks Fun!, Hall-ooo-ween, and Holly Jolly Secrets events, successfully protecting the box, and speeding up the wait timer with Gems. Outside of events, the player can either start stockpiling gems so they can rapidly farm as many impoppable maps as possible when these events arrive, or simply wait for the bloon beacon map every 4 hours and do their dailies. Spending Martian Crystals is ill advised as there are more exclusive things that can be spent with them.

For spending Cosmic Essence, if aiming for getting every character to level 10, it is advised that cosmic essence is spent on characters with alternate versions, preferably on ones considered most useful first. The character tokens that are used by two characters are Finn Cakes, Meatballs, Red, Candy, Bananas, and Anchors. As both Maxes are considered sub par later on, they can typically be skipped for a while. If not aiming for all level 10 characters, then the best use for Cosmic Essence is any character where reaching higher levels is important, notably for unlocking strong Activated Abilities.

For Jake and Warrior Bubblegum specifically, leveling them up to level 10 is considered detrimental, as Jake forcefully gains an attack that stops him from applying his Butt Shove as often, and Warrior PB has allies that can be detrimental during Shuffle Martian Games, or simply just annoying otherwise.
