Stack of Old Nails: Level 16+

The Stack of Old Nails is an available in Geraldo's Shop from Level 1. When placed, it will leave a pile of 10 rusty nails that deal 1 damage to passing Bloons. At Level 13, these new steel spikes deal 6 damage each, and at level 16 it becomes a Nail Mine that has 24 nails each with 6 damage, +6 Ceramic Damage, +1 fortified damage. Once fully depleted, the level 16 Stack sets off a small explosion with 14 damage, +2 Ceramic damage, +1 fortified damage, 40 pierce, and 19 blast radius. This explosion also applies a burn to all affected Bloons with 1 damage every 2.0 seconds for 6 seconds, including DDTs.

As road items, the Stack of Old Nails can only be deployed on the track similar to Road Spikes and Spike Factories' spikes. In addition, they automatically pop Camo Bloons. Level 1-15 Stack of Old Nails cannot pops Frozen or Leads but the Level 16+ Nail Mine's nails has the Normal damage type (which pops all bloon types) but its explosion won't pop black properties yet its napalm does.

Stack of Old Nails costs $40 on Easy, $50 on Medium, $55 on Hard, $60 on Impoppable. The maximum amount of Stacks of Old Nails Geraldo can have in his shop is 10. They will restock 1 at a time every round, and he initially starts with 4.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Some cleanup that can be used to pick up some stray bloons. Its main use case is in the early-game to catch leaks, allowing for no lives to be lost. There is some use of Stack of Old Nails to do a small amount of extra damage to an undesirable target, such as early MOABs. It can still have some impact later on in the game by leveling Geraldo to upgrade the Stack of Old Nails into stronger forms.

Tips[]

  • The Stack of Old Nails item functions similarly to a mix between the BTD6 Road Spikes and pre-BTD6 Road Spikes. It is helpful for emergencies in No Lives Lost games. It is common for people to spam as many as possible on the track. However, you can only place up to 10 piles before they need to restock.
  • Stack of Old Nails for Camo on Round 24 is the cheapest way to temporarily pop Camo, and is a cheaper alternative to other camo options like the See Invisibility Potion, which can be used on Round 33 instead.
  • Although Stacks of Old Nails last forever on the track, it is wise not to overspend on spending on stockpiling large piles of them on the tracks.
  • Stack of Old Nails can be used on Round 40 to deal with the MOAB's outer layer; this is guaranteed cheaper than the $650 from a Blade Trap. These spikes aren't quite so effective against the Round 60 BFB, but the Stack of New Nails gained from Level 13-15 can somewhat help against the Round 80 ZOMG, inflicting up to 600 damage out of the 4000 HP of the ZOMG.
  • Versus a single Super Ceramic, up to 7 spikes are needed to pop it, taking 5 hits to break the Ceramic shell and 2 for the Bloons underneath. Ignore the napalm for this calculation, since it takes too long to inflict gradual damage.

Geraldo has a lot of items that are still undervalued compared to others while Pickles appears to stand far above the rest as the downside for the power increase isn’t quite enough. We’re pulling more of these lower & higher items closer in to the middle

Trivia[]

  • At Level 13-15, the names for the Stack of Old Nails remain the same, despite clearly having a non-rusty appearance. The description at Level 13-15 refers these spikes as a "very large stack of old nails", even though it doesn't grant more pierce.
  • Stack of Old Nails is the only Geraldo item whose name changes upon leveling up.
  • As it costs ingame money, albeit requiring Geraldo to be selected and placed, this item can be seen as a more faithful successor to BTD2-5 road spikes compared to the Road Spikes Power.
  • The statistics for the Nail Mine when first released matched similarly to the Spiked Mines upgrade prior to Version 33.0's bonus Fortified damage buff to that Spike Factory upgrade. The pierce amounts, blast radius, napalm damage, all bonus damage amounts, but not base damage amounts (e.g. spikes (6 instead of 2)), were identical between a Nail Mine and a Spiked Mine.
    • Note that at the time of release, Spiked Mines and Nail Mine both had 14 pierce for their own spikes and 40 pierce for their explosions. Also, the blast radius for both explosions is 19, the Fortified damage was +1 at the time, and napalm damage was 1.
