Shrapnel Shot Sniper's shrapnel

Shrapnel Shot is the 2nd upgrade on Path 2 of the Sniper Monkey in Bloons TD Battles 2. Damaged bloons produce 5 shrapnel in the direction of the Sniper Monkey's shots. Shrapnel is arranged in a cone shape in a 45-degree formation, and each shrapnel piece pops 2 bloons and deals +2 damage to camo bloons.

Upgrading with Large Calibre increases the damage of each shrapnel piece to 2 instead of 1, Deadly Precision increases it to 5, upgrading it to Maim MOAB increases it to 8, and Cripple MOAB will increase it to 12. Purchasing any Path 1 upgrade (including Full Metal Jacket) will allow shrapnel pieces to pop Frozen and Lead. Shrapnel spawned from Maim MOAB or Cripple MOAB additionally stuns and cripples affected blimps, respectively, at full duration.

It costs $250.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Shrapnel Shot's grouped popping allows a Sniper to fare well in a Battles 2 situation, making the Sniper far more flexible than in Battles 1. It is even possible to start off with a Shrapnel Sniper, although this is highly not recommended and is preferred as a supporting DPS option. Shrapnel Shot is especially potent with Maim MOAB, which allows for a grouped blimp stun. Because the direction at which the shrapnel spews out is the same as the direction of the bullet, try to position the Sniper such that the shrapnel points against the grain, maximizing its popping power.

Tips[]

  • 0-2-2 performs better in the early-game. 1-2-0 is helpful versus early Leads.
  • Try positioning the Sniper against the direction of the bloons, so the shrapnel can take advantage of all its pierce. Otherwise the added shrapnel becomes wasteful.
  • Taking account for the cumulative costs, a 0-2-0 Sniper is $650, which is still pretty expensive of an early-game defense but still less expensive than a 1-2-0 Tack ($755), or 2-0-0 Boomer ($805), and with the same cost as 0-3-0 Dart ($650).
  • Shrapnel Sniper isn't very efficient in the early-game compared to most early-game options, but if it must be used, it could be helpful to place the Shrapnel Sniper near the track on Close targeting to force the shrapnel to consistently point in the desired direction.

Version History[]

Shrapnel Shot got a price cut.

Initial release (compared to BTD6 during Version 28.0)
  • BUFF Shrapnel Shot costs less ($450 → $400)
1.0.2
  • BUFF No longer requires 600 XP to unlock. Players who unlocked this upgrade before the update will receive a full refund.
1.7.0
  • BUFF Gains Camo Prioritization.
3.2
  • BUFF Shrapnel Shot cost decreased ($400 → $300)
    • Overall price decrease is $300, due to the price cuts to Night Vision Goggles ($100) and base Sniper ($100).
Sniper Monkey also lacks early game efficiency, being most used for its tier 3/4/5 upgrades way past the early game. Additionally, Sniper hasn’t been particularly prevalent in highest arenas recently, so we have made quite a few price cuts to the early upgrades to encourage Sniper to be used more and to potentially provide some more use cases for it in the early game.

3.3
  • BUFF Shrapnel Shot cost decreased from $300 to $250
Sniper is still not quite as strong as we would like. It lacks early game efficiency and its bottom path is a little too expensive for what it does, so a few price cuts have been made.

4.1
  • BUFF Shrapnel damage with Path 1 upgrades increased
    • 1-2-0: 1 → 2
    • 2-2-0: 2 → 3
    • 3-2-0: 4 → 5
    • 4-2-0: 6 → 8
Since it’s hard to get much use out of Sniper in the early game, we’re giving it some simple early game buffs and improvements to crosspathing.

4.2
  • BUFF Shrapnels now deal +2 damage to camo bloons
There was a bug where only the main attack was dealing additional damage to camo bloons, not the shrapnel pieces. This has now been corrected which results in a slight buff to the Sniper.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.2.1 OTA Update 2
  • NERF Shrapnel damage with Path 1 upgrades decreased
    • 1-2-0: 2 → 1
    • 2-2-0: 3 → 2
    • Deadly Precision and above upgrades shrapnel damage remains unchanged
We were a little too successful in trying to increase the popularity of the Sniper Monkey as it is now the single most used tower in the game, surpassing even the Banana Farm. Sniper’s popularity is due to its versatility as an income source that also excels with both group popping through its shrapnel shot and at single targets with its high damage. [,,,]

Trivia[]

  • Shrapnel Shot used to be as cheap as the base Sniper in this game, which has occurred from Version 3.3 before Version 4.1.
