Creates super-powerful but highly unstable sentries.
~ In-game description

Sentry Champion (formerly named Sentry Paragon before Version 28.0) is the 5th upgrade of Path 1 for the Engineer Monkey in Bloons TD 6. Instead of four unique specialized sentry types, the Engineer now builds purple sentries that shoot high-damage plasma and explode instead of despawning, destroying nearby bloons. Each active Champion Sentry shoots plasma at 15 times per second, deals 3 damage per shot, and each shot has 5 pierce (10 with 5-0-1 or 5-0-2). Once a Champion Sentry is deactivated, it undergoes a brief 2-second phase (or immediately if manually sold) before exploding at 50 blast radius with 100 damage and up to 50 pierce (75 with 5-0-1 or 5-0-2).

This upgrade costs $27,200 on Easy, $32,000 on Medium, $34,560 on Hard, and $38,400 on Impoppable.

Quick Answers

What was the Sentry Champion's original name before Version 28.0? toggle section
The Sentry Champion, prior to Version 28.0, was originally named 'Sentry Paragon'. The name alteration, mentioned in an October 15th, 2021 blog post, was implemented to prevent confusion with actual Paragons in the game.

What is the main difference between the Sentry Champion and the Sentry Paragon in Bloons TD 6? toggle section
In Bloons TD 6, the Sentry Champion and Sentry Paragon refer to the same Engineer Monkey upgrade. The Sentry Champion, previously called Sentry Paragon until Version 28.0, generates powerful yet unstable sentries, replacing the four specialized sentries of the Sentry Expert. The name was altered to prevent confusion with actual Paragons, leading to a humorous notion of the Sentry Paragon being 'downgraded' to a Champion.
Provided by: Fandom
What kind of damage does the Sentry Champion's plasma shots do? toggle section
Sentry Champion's plasma shots deal plasma damage. Each plasma shot inflicts 2 damage and has a pierce of 5. The plasma can affect Frozen Bloons and Lead Bloons. The Sentry Champion fires at an impressive rate of around 15 shots per second. Upon expiration, the Sentry Champion triggers a plasma explosion, causing 100 damage within a 50 blast radius, affecting up to 50 bloons.
Provided by: Fandom
How often does each active Champion Sentry shoot plasma in a second? toggle section
The Plasma Sentry, or Sentry Champion, fires plasma at an extremely rapid pace, with a minimal 0.06s cooldown between each shot. This equates to an estimated 16.67 plasma shots per second. Keep in mind, this is a theoretical value and actual in-game performance may differ due to various game mechanics and player strategies.

What happens when a Champion Sentry is deactivated in Bloons TD 6? toggle section
In Bloons TD 6, upon deactivation, a Sentry Champion initiates a short 2-second phase before detonating, eliminating adjacent bloons. This detonation can inflict up to 100 damage to a maximum of 50 bloons. Notably, the Sentry Champion is unable to pop Lead and Purple Bloons without additional support.

Overview[]

Sentry Champion with many Champion Sentries within range of the Engineer

Sentry Champion tints the Engineer's goggles purple, and paints essentially all their equipment's handles purple as well; it gains a new silvery wrench, a screwdriver, a sledgehammer, and a mechanical arm.

In the upgrade portrait, the Sentry Champion Engineer sits on a Champion Sentry looking crazed, sticking tongue out, and attempting to balance on the Champion Sentry. The Champion Sentry is presumably firing, displaying a plasma colored muzzle flash.

Sentry Champion changes its four specialized sentries (Crushing, Boom, Cold, and Energy) for a single type of sentry called a Champion Sentry. Champion Sentries shoot rapid-fire plasma and explode plasma when its lifespan expires. For further information about the Champion Sentry, refer to #Types of Sentry.

Targeting Priorities[]

Sentry Champion targets bloons using the standard targeting priorities. Its main attack shoots straight movement projectiles.

  • First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
  • Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
  • Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
  • Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.

Sentry Champion, like all Engineers with Path 1 upgrades, can deploy sub-towers called sentries, targeting them such that they prioritize unoccupied land. Newly spawned sentries inherit the parent Engineer's targeting priorities, and its main attack also shoots straight movement projectiles. Targeting priority for all sentries use standard targeting priorities (First, Last, Close, Strong) and can be changed at any time.

Champion Sentry shoots straight movement projectiles as its main attack. When lifespan expires, the Champion Sentry eventually explodes plasma in an area of effect, either instantly or after a time delay depending on manual/automatic input. The explosion is locked on Close for purposes of pierce calculations.

Official Artwork

The Champion Sentry, also known as Plasma Sentry, is purple and appears much larger than previous sentries, with a slightly more complex design. It shoots plasma at a very high speed, with only a 0.06s cooldown between each shot, and deals 3 damage per shot with a pierce of 5 per plasma blast (7 with 5-0-1). Plasma can pop Frozen Bloons and Lead Bloons, however, it cannot pop Camo Bloons (unless camo detection is granted) or Purple Bloons, unless supported with another nearby tower buff such as Monkey Intelligence Bureau. Note that the sentries do not have to be in range of any buffs to receive it. Only the Engineer themselves has to be in range of tower buffs for the sentries to also be affected.

Unlike other sentries, it explodes upon despawning, destroying any Bloons in the explosion radius and heavily damaging MOAB-class Bloons, resembling the Tech Terror's ability. The explosion radius is very slightly larger than the sentry's own range, but it cannot pop Purples unlike Tech Terror's ability. Plasmatic explosions deal 100 damage across a 50 blast radius, and pop up to 50 bloons (70 with 5-0-1).

Champion Sentries disable themselves after 25 seconds (30 with MK). Alternatively, a Champion Sentry can be sold to produce an on-demand explosion. Upon automatic disabling, a Champion Sentry requires a 2-second cooldown before it finally explodes. Manually exploded Champion Sentries bypass the timed explosion cooldown.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Although alternative options exist that fulfill a similar purpose, Sentry Champion is a solid DPS option which also has a solid leadup to it, making it somewhat easier to saveup for one. The main strength of Sentry Champion comes from its Champion Sentry plasma attacks, which deal a respectable amount of overall damage to both MOAB-class and bloons. Expired sentries additionally explode after a short delay for an unreliable but useful cleanup. Adding attack speed buffs such as Jungle Drums or Overclock to the Sentry Champion Engineer is strongly recommended to maximize the Engineer's damage potential. However, Sentry Champion does have extreme synergy with Call To Arms and Homeland Defense, boosting its potential DPS by a huge amount.

Although the Champion Sentries replace all of the Sentry Expert's four specialized sentries, Sentry Champion has the highest overall DPS out of all non-Paragon Engineer Monkeys, excluding instakills from the XXXL Trap upgrade.

Tips[]

  • If the Sentry Champion Engineer has any attack speed boosts active, it can produce more Sentries at a time and increasing its damage output.
    • Try adding Overclock to the Sentry Champion, as this allows the Sentry Champion to consistently produce sentries at a significantly improved rate. Although it does not improve the sentries themselves, the deployment rate of Champion Sentries increases with attack speed buffs.
    • Jungle Drums can improve both the Champion Sentry deployment rate and the Champion Sentries themselves, provided the main Engineer has this buff.
    • Adding Call To Arms or Homeland Defense greatly improves its damage potential by improving both Champion Sentry deployment rate and Champion Sentry attack speed. On top of this is gaining extra pierce for all its attacks.
  • When crosspathing upgrades to enhance the Sentry Champion's sentries, it is best to choose the 5-2-0 crosspath over the 5-0-2 crosspath. With Deconstruction, Champion Sentries deal +1 damage versus MOAB-class and an additional +1 versus Fortified, and since the main issues during late-game are generally MOAB-class and Fortified, this crosspath is almost always better than just granting +2 plasma pierce (5 to 7) via 5-0-2. Pin cannot affect Ceramics, and since Super Ceramics form the majority of late-game, the Pin effect simply is not worth it for how deep in the game it goes. The extra explosion pierce from 5-0-1 could be handy for cleanup via explosions, but the Sentry Champion's premiere synergies don't need so much extra internal pierce most of the time.
  • The 5-2-0 crosspath for Sentry Champion is much better, unlike Sentry Expert where 4-0-2 is better. 5-2-0 is much better, due to the fact that the Sentry Champion's sentries having super fast attacking speed, which synergises really well with Deconstruction upgrade. Unlike Sentry Expert how the attack speed is slow and doesn't synergise well with the Deconstruction upgrade.
    • Sentry Champion's purpose is to do significant damage to MOAB-class bloons, as well as Fortified. Where as Sentry Expert's purpose is to deal with different bloon types.
  • Dark Castle is an especially good map for the Sentry Champion. Placing it between two paths gives its exploding sentries a chance to hit densely-packed Bloons on both sides.
  • In Boss Events, the Sentry Champion is a top tier candidate against Bloonarius and Dreadbloon for receiving Ultraboost stacks after the Vengeful True Sun God, due to the sentries' high projectile count scaling well with debuffs and damage buffs. It is less useful against Gravelord Lych and Vortex due to being reliant on Homeland Defense for best results, and because sentries can spawn out of range of Vortex. It also isn't very good versus Phayze, as the resistant camo property always has up to half uptime, and Sentry Champion has no innate way to see Camo properties.
    • Note that for Dreadbloon, it still has Support immunity weakness, and due to Dreadbloon's resistance to low-damage attacks, the Sentry Champion won't do as much damage unless Dreadbloon is affected by blimp debuffs such as Cripple MOAB, Glue Storm, and Super Brittle, or external buffs like the aforementioned Vengeful True Sun God.

Balance Changes[]

Converting a support role into purely high DPS role isn't always the best tradeoff for Sentry Champion, but with a series of buffs to this upgrade it is now a worthwhile upgrade to go for. Sentry Champion has become quite usable on a practical CHIMPS game, as a result of various buffs to its base Champion Sentries in addition to its crosspathing benefits, especially for the 5-2-0 crosspath. Version 43.0 buffed its damage so it would be less reliant on external damage buffs and more of a self-sufficient tower.

Ninja Kiwi made the change of, at the time, the name "Sentry Paragon" to "Sentry Champion" in order to avoid confusion with Paragons, as explained in their 15th October 2021 blog.

  • BUFF Sentry Paragon explosion damage increased from 70 to 85.
  • BUFF Manually sold Paragon Sentries will explode with no animation delay.

  • BUFF Sentry Champion now benefit Sentry and nail gun attack speed from Sprockets upgrade
  • Note: Ninja Kiwi incorrectly listed the attack speed bonuses as a buff to the production rate; it is actually a buff to the attack speed bonuses granted to the nailgun and sentry nail attacks.
  • BUFF 5-2-0 Sentries' Deconstruction bonuses to Fortified and MOAB-class are no longer mutually exclusive
35.0
Sentry Champion’s pierce crosspath does not feel like it has enough of an edge to compete with the deconstruction crosspath. [...]

  • BUFF 5-0-1 Sentry Champion explosion pierce increased (51 → 70)
43.0
[...] Sentry placements are slightly changing to improve their reliability, and will now spawn closer to the track depending on how much range the sentry has. Sentry Champion, while strong with them, is lacking without high buff support so we’re trying out an increase to the sentry damage on it.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Sentry Champion sentry plasma damage increased from 2 to 3
  • Change Sentries now spawn within 20% of their range to the track
47.0
This was becoming annoying screen clutter with large numbers of sentries, and feels unnecessary when you can overclock the engineer itself to create more sentries instead.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • Change Sentries can no longer be targeted for Overclock or Ultraboost
    • BUFF Overall buff due to avoiding accidental targeting of sentries in the clutter

Trivia[]

  • The sentry's design is similar to Engineer's Workshop 4th tier Sentry from BTD5.
  • The Champion Sentry is the only tower that can be "sold" on CHIMPS mode, except between Version 21.0 and Version 22.0 when the sell option for Champion Sentries were disabled. When sold, it automatically triggers an on-demand explosion.
  • According to Ninja Kiwi's 16th July 2021 blog, Ninja Kiwi replied "probably not!" to a question about Sentry Paragon's name change. However, in a different blog, October 15th 2021 blog, Sentry Champion had its name changed to avoid confusion with actual Paragons.
    • When the name change from 'Sentry Paragon' to 'Sentry Champion' was made in Version 28.0, it is a common joke to suggest that Sentry Paragon was "downgraded" into just a Champion, given how strong Paragons generally are.
  • In Bloons TD Battles 2 the sprite for the plasma projectiles that Champion Sentries produce is noticeably different from its BTD6 counterpart, with the former looking more like "pellet-like" plasma projectiles and the latter having more Plasma Blasts projectiles.
