- For the Bloons Monkey City feature, see Research (BMC).
Research is a New Feature added in Bloons Super Monkey 2. When you buy it, it makes your attacks periodically stronger/capable to pop a certain type of bloon.
The first stage of each Research is cheap, and fires a special attack after an infrequent amount of attacks (50, 40, or 35). 12th upgrade is very expensive, and fires a special attack frequently. Hotter Cooldown and Blop Magnet work different than other Research, as they modify a stat in percentages.
Research also appears in the mobile version of the game, but Blop Magnet and Hotter Cooldowns can no longer be researched as they are now crate abilities, and there is now research for Ice and Storm weapons. Blops are now split into Blue and Red Blops, and research requires Blue Blops.
Research Types[]
- Sharp Darts: Periodically fire Mega darts and spiked balls that do blistering damage.
- Function: Doubles pierce of Dart Class weapons.
- Bloontonium Darts: Periodically fire Super darts and spike balls that can pop lead bloons.
- Note: Also enables it to pop Frozen Bloons in Mobile.
- Mega Rangs: Periodically fire Mega boomerangs, shuriken, and glaives that can hit more bloons.
- Function: Doubles radius of Rangs Class weapons' hitboxes.
- Hot Rangs: Periodically enable Hot boomerangs, shuriken, and blades can pop lead bloons.
- Heavy Ordinance: Periodically fire Mega bombs and pineapples that have wider AOE.
- Function: Increases radius of explosions by x1.5.
- Phosphorus Bombs: Periodically fire Super bombs and pineapples so hot they can pop black bloons.
- Technological Terror: Periodically fire Mega tech powers that have increased damage.
- Function: Doubles energy/damage of Tech/Energy Class weapons. On mobile for weapons with damage instead of energy, instead adds +1 damage, then multiplies the sum by 2.
- Focused Beams: Periodically fire Super tech tree powers that can pop glass bloons.
- Wizard Lord: Periodically fire Mega magic that does big damage.
- Function: Doubles energy/damage of Magic Class weapons. On mobile for weapons with damage instead of energy, instead adds +1 damage, then multiplies the sum by 2.
- Earth Magic: Periodically fire Super powers that can damage Ceramic Bloons.
- Big Bloon Sabotage: Periodically all powers fire Mega shots that do more damage to MOAB-Class and bosses.
- Function: Doubles damage to MOAB-Class Bloons on Flash, unknown multiplier on Mobile.
- Forcefield Phasing/Shield Suppression: Periodically all weapons fire Mega shots that do increased damage to force fields.
- Function: Doubles damage to Shielded bloons.
- Hotter Cooldowns (Flash): Regenerative science makes activated abilities come back faster.
- Blop Magnet (Flash): Dark matter nanosiphons increase the radius of blop collection.
- Frost Bite (Mobile): Ice weapons do extra damage.
- Function: Adds +1 damage, then multiplies the sum by 2. This allows Ice cores to deal damage, despite their lack of base damage.
- Deep Freeze (Mobile): Ice weapons can affect white and zebra bloons.
- Severe Weather (Mobile): Storm weapons do extra damage.
- Function: Adds +1 damage, then multiplies the sum by 2.
- Eye of the Storm (Mobile): Storm weapons can affect glass, lead and ceramic bloons.
- Note: No research visually alters how Storm attacks look.
Web Version (Costs/Effect)[]
On Effects,
- Upgrades decreasing in number, it shows the effect will work after the number of attacks.
- Upgrades increasing in percentage, it shows how big the radius (Blop Magnet) and how many percentage to subtract 100% (Hotter Cooldown).
Mobile Version[]
These cost 50 times from the web version.
Notes[]
- On the flash version's Software Mode, attacks with Research have no change in appearance. In Hardware through, research attacks look different than normal attacks (red colored)
- On the mobile version, Big Bloon Sabotage seemingly does not work properly or makes a very negligible difference. Tested against Eagle Bloon (5,000 HP) with Double Plasma (dealing 10 damage a projectile) with and bomb arms and max big bloon sabotage research, but no energy research, with a kill time of ~31.2 seconds, implying 480 projectiles were shot, 68-70 of them being boosted, and ~92 bomb projectiles dealing 1 damage each. This leaves 108 unused damage which implies Big Bloon Sabotage boosted projectiles only deal ~10-15% more damage against MOABs, or potentially no boost at all.
- In the mobile version, there is a 13th level of research that cannot be unlocked legitimately. Level 13 research causes every projectile to have the special property in question.
- For unused research concepts found in the game files of the mobile edition, see Research (BSM2)/Unreleased.

Trivia[]
- Blue Blops are also called Research Blops, as Blue Blops in BSM2 Mobile were originally only used in research.
