“ | The legendary Pouākai, a bird so large that it can pick up, carry off and destroy almost any number of Bloons of almost any size. Requires 3 additional Condor Handlers to control. | ” |
~ In-game description |
Pouākai (or Pouakai without the macron, or Haast Eagle) is the fifth and final upgrade of Path 3 for the Beast Handler in Bloons TD 6. It transforms the Giant Condor to a Pouākai, which can pick up many more bloons and deal much more damage to them, attack Lead Bloons without support (including DDTs), and even pick up ZOMGs. As an airborne creature, the Beast Handler requires nearby track to position the Pouākai directly above nearby bloons. The Pouākai requires merging with 3 other Giant Condors to unlock the Pouākai upgrade. Beast power maximum increases from 64 to 132, and base has 36 (although it is merged with 3 other Giant Condors by default, raising it to 84).
Pouākai has greatly increased base damage, from 2 to 10 to standard bloons, +80 versus MOAB-Class bloons (total of 90 MOAB-class damage), base pierce from 30 to 150, and can pick up ZOMGs and DDTs. Ceramics no longer consume extra pierce, DDTs consume 30 pierce, but ZOMGs consume 60 pierce, pierce consumption of MOABs and BFBs remain 15 and 30, respectively. However, while it still cannot pick up BADs or Bosses (including Rock Bloons), it can now target and deal damage to them, at no pierce penalty. Pouākai is able to pop and target every single bloon type in the game. Additionally, Pouākai no longer has a flight speed penalty while picking up MOAB-class bloons. Caught bloons will only spawn one child.
Like all Beast Handlers, Pouākai benefits from merges. Relative to its base stats, the Pouākai gains base damage at a ratio of 5 damage per 6 power, and pierce at a ratio of 25 pierce every 8 power, both values rounded down. Attack cooldown reduces linearly at a ratio of 0.2868s every 96 power. At the default 84/132 power, the Pouākai can pick up to 300 bloons (up to 20 MOABs, 10 BFBs, 5 ZOMGs, 5 DDTs), deal 50 damage, and attack every 0.46s. At max power, the Pouākai can pick up to 450 bloons (up to 30 MOABs, 15 BFBs, 8 ZOMGs, 8 DDTs), deal 90 damage, and attack every 0.32s.
This upgrade costs $25,500 on Easy, $30,000 on Medium, $32,400 on Hard, and $36,000 on Impoppable.
Description[]
Overview[]
When upgraded to Pouākai, the handler replaces the Giant Condor with a Pouākai. The handler now wears much more elaborate headwear, wears a cloak of blue-and-green feathers reminiscent of kahu huruhuru worn by traditional Māori, and an overhaul of decorations on its staff. On its warbonnet are many more elaborate feathers (including many larger feathers and a row of smaller red feathers), wears a forehead necklace of large blue and small yellow beads, and on the middle of the warbonnet is a skull of a raptor. It also now grows white bushy eyebrows. Its staff has many more stripes and has a pair of Pouākai tail feathers hanging from the front tip, additionally hangs beads of yellow and blue, and the stripes have an even more intricate design; the staff is adorned with a variety of colored stripes of green, brown, yellow, and red.
The Pouākai derives from Māori mythology, in which the eponymous mythological bird was said to kill and eat humans. This myth most likely refers to the Haast’s eagle, a real but now extinct species of eagle known for its immense size. The real-life Haast's eagle's massive size is attributed as an evolutionary response to its main prey, the moa.
In Bloons TD 6, the Pouākai is represented similarly to an enlarged golden eagle with very long wingspans, dark brown feathers across its head and body, blue sclera with black pupils, a golden-colored rim surrounding its beak, orange-colored owl-like "horns", and an intricate colored pattern for its wing and tail feathers. At the upper rims of the wings and lower section of the tail feathers are orange-colored feathers. Below the upper rims of its wings is a thin row of brown feathers. At the lower sections of the wings are black feathers with two rows of contrasting blue feathers alternating across the middle rows. Upon gaining extra beast power, the Pouākai gains a pair of long peacock-like tail feathers at the tail end of it; this repeats twice, for up to four of these feathers. Sometimes, while the Pouākai is idle, it may turn its head around, looking around its surroundings.
Pouākai gains the capability to detect and damage all bloon types, as well as pick up almost all bloon types, including ZOMGs and DDTs, but BADs and Boss Bloons. Pouākai deals even more damage and gains even more pierce, and no longer consumes extra pierce on Ceramics. Whenever it attacks without picking up bloons, the Pouākai will suddenly thrash its wings at the bloons, visually creating a downdraft and blowing off some of its feathers in the process.
Targeting Priorities[]
As an upgraded Beast Handler, the Pouākai Handler controls a flying beast, the Pouākai. The Pouākai can be merged from weaker-tier flying beasts to add Beast Power, empowering the Pouākai via merging other Beast Handlers. This system utilises the Merge button to select a valid Beast Handler given sufficient energy capacity.
The Pouākai follows along the lanes in a semi-Pursuit targeting, similarly to Etienne’s drones, and adheres to standard targeting priorities.
- First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
- Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
- Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
- Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.
Aside from the standard four targeting priorities (First, Last, Close, Strong), a Pouākai Beast Handler also has a special targeting button that allows it to select a point anywhere on the track (via the "Target Bird" button). Their bird will attempt to drag any Bloons it attacks towards that position.
Any Beast Handlers who have merged their birds into a Pouākai will also "share" their targeting ranges, in a similar manner to Advanced Intel. The bird will be able to attack Bloons in all merged Handlers' ranges, and the "Target Bird" reticle can be placed along any valid track location in any of their ranges.

Statistics[]
Updated as of Version 44.1
- Base Stats
- Handler:
- Passive type, automatically places a Pouākai beast on valid lanes within 60 range. Pouākai flies above valid lanes and gains access to Grab and Peck. Can reposition the reticle of the Pouākai manually; Pouākai initiates Grab towards this location, otherwise uses Peck. Flight speed of 110 units per second and doubles while flying towards the target.
- Grab:
- Zone, normal type, can move within 60 range, 45 radius, 0.6s attack cooldown, 10 damage, +1 Regrow damage (11 Regrow damage), +80 MOAB-class damage (90 MOAB-class damage), 150 pierce (consumption: MOABs = 15, BFBs = 30, DDTs = 30, ZOMGs = 60). Drags affected targets to a new location and deals the same damage every 0.5s, bloon targets cannot be re-moved until repositioned, but can be targeted by other attacks. Caught bloons will only spawn one child. Cannot grab BADs or Bosses, instead using Peck.
- Peck:
- Zone, normal type, can move within 60 range, 45 radius, 0.6s attack cooldown, 10 damage, +1 Regrow damage (11 Regrow damage), +80 MOAB-class damage (90 MOAB-class damage), 150 pierce (consumption: MOABs = 15, BFBs = 30, DDTs = 30, ZOMGs = 60).
- Max Power: 132
- Bonus Stat Changes: Damage increases by 5 every 6 power, pierce increases by 25 every 8 power. At the default 36 power, starts with 10 damage, 90 MOAB-class damage (+80 bonus MOAB-class damage), and 150 pierce.
- Equations: Where p is power, floor() function is rounding down, and ceil() function is rounding up:
- Grab and Peck (Base):
- Damage: 10 + floor([p-36] * 5/6), +80 to MOAB-class
- Pierce: 150 + floor(([p-36] * 25/8)
- Attack cooldown: 0.6 - (p-36)/96*0.28
- Grab and Peck (Base):
- Minimum Power (36, grab): 10 damage, +1 Regrow damage, +80 MOAB-class damage, 150 pierce (max for extra consumptions: 10 MOABs, 5 BFBs, 5 DDTs, 3 ZOMGs).
- Default Power (84, grab): 50 damage, +1 Regrow damage, +80 MOAB-class damage, 300 pierce (max for extra consumptions: 20 MOABs, 10 BFBs, 10 DDTs, 5 ZOMGs).
- Max Power (132, grab): Damage increased to 90, MOAB-class damage increased to 170 (+80), pierce increased to 450 (max for extra consumptions: 30 MOABs, 15 BFBs, 15 DDTs, 9 ZOMGs).

Strategy[]
Summary[]
Pouākai excels at altering the direction of various MOAB-class Bloons into a favorable location as decided by the custom-pointed bird reticle. While it is quick and nimble at picking up MOAB-class Bloons and Super Ceramics, dealing decent damage to all Bloon types, its incredible flight speed does still have a slight weakness to sustained DDTs, as it cannot easily catch up to all of them. Its well-rounded damage and unique utilities allow it to excel on a variety of maps, especially multi-lane maps with low distance between multiple paths.
When compared to Giant Condor, Pouākai switches from a support focus to a primary source of damage and blimp control, similarly to a mobile Druid’s Superstorm but with even more damage to MOAB-class Bloons. Instead of a stalling option, the Pouakai focuses on destroying Bloons it grabs, for a more self-sufficient cleanup. Unlike Condor, Pouākai is stronger at picking DDTs and is able to handle multiple ZOMGs, and its effectiveness against smaller targets relies on quick destruction rather than simply waiting for defenses to charge up. Regardless, the Pouākai still has struggles against Round 95, so it will need slowdown supports (such as Relentless Glue, Bloon Sabotage, and Snowstorm) to allow it to keep up with the incoming DDTs and Fortified MOABs.
Tips[]
- The Pouākai works well on multi-lane maps, even Expert Maps like Workshop and Muddy Puddles, since it can move MOAB-class bloons (besides BADs) to a more convenient lane and away from the exit. It is also especially good on maps where a section of the track is next to the beginning of the track, as it can essentially reset Bloon progress throughout.
- As with most bottom path Beast Handlers, assisting Handlers spread out throughout the map allow their provided 'intel' to effectively give the Pouākai infinite range to move bloons.
- In the transition to Pouākai, having the four Condors working separately is generally preferable, as a maxed Condor is only marginally better than a maxed Golden Eagle at non-blimp bloon control, and the separate Condors offer more overall control versus MOAB-class and ordinary bloons.
- The combined costs required to get Pouākai is a little less than Superstorm plus two Poplusts. However, the saveup to Pouākai isn't so bad, since the four Giant Condors possess decent MOAB-class pickup.
- When saving up to Pouākai, four separate Condors is usually better than using a maxed Condor.
- Note that Pouākai's increased pierce consumption versus MOAB-class bloons doesn't impede the capability to grab another heavy bloon with insufficient pierce.
- Multiplicative buffs such as Call To Arms and Homeland Defense hence assist reducing problems with pierce-capping the Pouākai.
- It's worth a note that the Call To Arms pierce buffs do affect Pouākai, but its attack speed buffs do not.
- 85/132 Pouākai is the minimum power required to grab up to 10 DDTs or 6 ZOMGs at once; this is enough for Pouākai to pick up all DDTs at once on standard CHIMPS rounds, with pure exception of Round 95.
- 123/132 Pouākai is the minimum power required to grab up to 8 ZOMGs at once, enough to move away all ZOMGs of Round 98 at once, and the maximum amount of ZOMGs it can pick up without external buffs.
- To pick up the innards of a single BAD at once, Pouākai must be 56/132 or above, which has 212 pierce.
- Multiplicative buffs such as Call To Arms and Homeland Defense hence assist reducing problems with pierce-capping the Pouākai.
- Even at the default power, the Pouākai can pick up all the innards of a single BAD at once, only consuming a total of 210 pierce to pick up all of them at once. Therefore, a Pouākai only needs BAD-popping power to deal with Round 100.
- Generally speaking, set Pouākai on Strong to pick up the strongest pickable blimp types, unless there are BADs and/or Boss Bloons. However, it should be set on First if bloons are starting to approach the exits.
- Note that Strong prioritizes DDTs over ZOMGs, leading to Pouākai to prefer chasing the quick DDTs over the slower ZOMGs if set on Strong.
- Pouākai appreciates from supports that slow down Bloons and blimps, such as Relentless Glue, Bloon Sabotage, and Snowstorm. Additionally, DPS-heavy heroes, such as Captain Churchill but especially Adora, help avoid Pouākai from getting overwhelmed by too many swarms of Bloons, especially large quantities of DDTs.
- Relentless Glue can help reduce some of Pouākai's weaknesses against DDTs and big clumps of MOABs, as affected bloons can stun neighboring bloons once popped, including the faster weaker blimps.
- Use cases for maxing a Pouākai is mainly to improve its pickup reliability and if the faster pickup of large quantities of heavy blimps is truly necessary. Most of the time, the default mid-power Pouākai should be sufficient for most situations, since the extra money that would’ve been to buy a max-powered Pouākai could be invested into its premiere supports, such as slowdowns and RBE eliminators.
- For standard CHIMPS rounds, Pouākai tends to struggle the most on Round 95, as there are not only significant amounts of DDTs, but the large amounts of Fortified MOABs in the way may block its capability to pick enough DDTs.
- On Round 100, Pouākai does fair damage to BADs but still appreciates from additional single-target damage. If the BAD layer is popped, the Pouākai should be able to pick all insides at once, assuming ranged intel is present at the popped location.
Version History[]
Balance Changes[]
Pouākai is a popular option for grabbing various types of MOAB-class while dealing a lot of general damage to MOAB-class bloons, even in CHIMPS. Since its base pierce amounts were too high even without merge considerations, its pierce was decreased immensely in 37.0 to reduce its overall dominance, and 39.0 reworked it to benefit much more from merges. Its upper amounts of base damage was increased in exchange for less MOAB-class base damage and reduced minimum base damage. Some balance changes directed specifically to Condor have been passed over into Pouakai, plus some undocumented changes such as the ZOMG penalty on v43.0.
- 36.0
- Released
- 37.0
- Pouākai now deals +1 damage to Regrow Bloons
- [undocumented] Pouākai can no longer accept the Overclock or Ultraboost buffs.
- Note: Ninja Kiwi incorrectly addressed "5-x-x & x-5-x Beast handler paths are now overclockable", which implies that beasts from Paths 1 and 2 can be buffed from Overclock; from testing, the actual balance change is that birds no longer accept Overclock or Ultraboost buffs, and previously all Beast Handlers could accept the Overclock buff properly and pass them to their beasts, just now water beasts can accept the buff better by increasing rate of the splash. This also affects Ultraboost.
- 38.0
“ | [...] Pouakai’s base pierce value was far too high so this along with the merge amount is being taken down. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Pouākai pierce decreased, base value decreased (300 → 200) and maximum value decreased (700 → 450)
- Pouākai base pierce reduced (300 → 200)
- Pouākai total range of pierce values decreased (400 → 250)
- 39.0
“ | [...] Condor’s pierce penalties to early MOAB Class are going up, however the max merged version will now be allowed to attack and damage targets that it cannot grab. Pouakai deals way too much moab damage right from base upgrade given how powerful it also is at controlling MOABs, base damage & pierce stats here are also seeing a shift over into higher merge benefits | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Condor and Pouakai |
- Pouakai pierce penalty versus MOABs increased (10 → 15)
- Pouakai pierce penalty versus BFBs increased (30 → 45)
- Pouakai base pierce reduced with merge benefits increased. Minimum pierce decreased from 200 to 150 but maximum pierce remaining at 450.
- Pouakai pierce reduced from 200 → 150
- Pouakai max bonus pierce from merge increased from 250 → 300
- Pouakai base damage reduced with merge benefits increased. Minimum damage decreased from 20 to 10 but maximum damage increased from 60 to 90.
- Pouakai damage reduced from 20 → 10
- Pouakai max bonus damage from merge increased from 40 → 80
- Pouakai bonus MOAB-class damage reduced from +110 → +80
- 43.0
“ | Golden Eagle has stood out more than Condor against MOABs which has felt very wrong, last update it was nerfed against MOABs and now we are playing with the pierce & penalties to improve Golden Eagle further against non-MOAB-Class targets and for Condor more help with lower MOABs. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Condor and max Golden Eagle |
- Pouakai pierce penalty versus BFBs reduced from +44 to +29
- [undocumented] Pouakai pierce penalty versus ZOMGs and DDTs increased from +49 to +59.
- 44.0
“ | Now that the many T1-3 upgrade price changes are settling we’re looking at the next tier up. [...] Condor’s value spiked quite high after being hit by buffs at the same time as big buffs to Golden Eagle so its price is being appropriately adjusted upwards, however the total pierce cost for grabbing DDTs is also being halved as previously the pierce penalty it had against DDTs was being shared with the ZOMG cost and was unintentionally nerfed along with that change. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Condor |
- Indirect buff, as Pouakai doesn't consume extra pierce versus Ceramics but Giant Condor now consumes 2 pierce versus Ceramics.
- Pouakai pierce penalty versus DDT reduced from +59 to +29
- Cumulative cost per 0-0-4 Giant Condor required for Pouakai increased ($11,220 → $12,420), total cost of three additional 0-0-4 Giant Condors increased further ($33,660 → $37,260)

Extra Notes (Version History)[]
- In the Version 44.0 in-game code, the pierce penalty for ZOMGs and DDTs were formerly joined together, but have now been separated.
Bugs[]
- Current
- [36.0] Pouakai picking up any MOAB-class bloon that are destroyed in flight only leave behind 1 of 4 children each. This does not occur if the blimp is destroyed after dropping into a new location. This does not affect popped BADs, as they cannot be picked up and only release their usual children.

Trivia[]
- In Māori mythology, the Pouākai is a monstrous bird that was said to kill and eat humans. The myth most likely referred to Haast’s eagle, a real but now extinct species of eagle known for its immense size.
- Pouākai is the only upgrade that uses a Māori name and the only upgrade whose name contains a macron. Even the upgrade icon's filename uses a macron:
PouākaiUpgradeIcon.png
.- Pouākai's upgrade sound is referred in the in-game files as
PlaceBeastHandlerPoukai.wav
without the "ā" phoneme and no substituting "a".
- Pouākai's upgrade sound is referred in the in-game files as
- Pouākai is the cheapest of the Tier 5 Beast Handlers.
- Despite the other MOAB-class Bloons consuming more than 1 pierce, BADs only consume 1 pierce in regards to Pouākai's Peck attack.
