“ | Stealthy and fast Monkey that throws bladed shurikens to pop the Bloons. Can target Camo Bloons. | ” |
~ In-game Description |
The Ninja Monkey is a Magic-class tower that was released in the initial release of Bloons TD 6. The tower retains its name and role from the Bloons TD 5 generation, with significant additions. It did not receive any teasers prior to release, but it was first shown when the game was available to select YouTubers several days before BTD6's official release date.
Ninja Monkey attacks at a moderately fast speed, throwing a shuriken every 0.62s. Ninjas deal 1 damage and hit up to 2 bloons per shuriken. It has a moderate range of 40. Ninja Monkey is one of two towers in BTD6 to detect camo by default, the other being Spike Factory, but the only to receive the Camo Prioritization target option by default. Many of its upgrades are powerful as supportive and offensive options, including shurikens that seek, buffing attack speed and pierce of nearby Ninjas, deadly sticky bombs, and immediate slowdown of all bloons on screen. (Except BADs, as they are immune to all slows.)
It costs $340 on Easy, $400 on Medium, $430 on Hard, and $480 on Impoppable.
Description[]
The Ninja Monkey is a monkey with a red jumpsuit revealing only its hands, feet, and eyes, along with a white ninja belt. On its official portrait, it holds a dark grey shuriken with its right hand, and appears to be in a prepared pose for throwing the shuriken, with a crouching stance, a focused glare, and a shuriken prepared to be thrown. When dropped on the screen, the Ninja will do a three-point landing pose with its right hand and both feet. When idle, the Ninja Monkey occasionally bows or looks around both sides.
Path 1 improves the effectiveness of the Ninja's raw strength. It increases the amount of shurikens the ninja monkey can throw. This is the standard Ninja Monkey path and has remained mostly unchanged from BTD5. This path focuses on throwing out large numbers of shurikens for massive DPS against bloons and MOAB-class.
Path 2 themes around sabotaging the bloons with tactical advantages against the bloons, turning the Ninja Monkey into a support tower. This is through his new abilities to confuse bloons, reveal camos, speed up other Ninja Monkeys and to slow bloons. At the highest upgrade, Grand Saboteur, the Ninja can even decrease the health of all incoming non-Boss blimps.
Path 3 is all about accurately destroying targets with a variety of weapons and covering a wider area. Along this path, it turns the Ninja Monkey into a MOAB killer, which is based on the tier 4 upgrade Sticky Bomb. The previous upgrades are just generally helpful abilites such as caltrops and flash bombs.
Target Priorities[]
The base Ninja Monkey uses the standard target priorities: First, Last, Close, Strong. Most its attacks are dependent on its given target priority.
- First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
- Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
- Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
- Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.
Most of its alternate attacks have different target priorities:
- Caltrops always targets sporadically in a similar way to a base Spike Factory's Normal targeting.
- Shinobi Tactics is a range-based buff, and targets only Ninja Monkeys.
- Bloon Sabotage targets all bloons on screen instantaneously and all incoming bloons.
- Grand Saboteur targets bloons similarly to Bloon Sabotage, but its unique blimp health percentage reduction only targets incoming blimps.
- All attacks from Flash Bomb, Sticky Bomb, and Master Bomber target based on the Ninja's own target priority. Master Bomber's sticky bombs have infinite range, excluding Line of Sight restrictions.
Ninja Monkey is unique in that it comes with the Camo Prioritization target option, a separate option that allows it to target Camo Bloons before all others, and if multiple Camo Bloons are on screen, it will attack the first, last, closest, or strongest, depending on the main targeting.

Summary[]
Ninja Monkey is unique in that it is the only non-hero base tower to directly detect Camo. It has decent accurate early-game options, and offers many upgrades for popping various types of bloons for a moderate price. However, many of these upgrades have low pierce and rely on defensive synergies, including other Ninjas (particularly with Shinobi Tactics), to optimize their true power.
Tips[]
- 0-0-0 Ninja can accomplish as a starter tower on CHIMPS for almost all Beginner Maps, but only a few of the easier Intermediate Maps, and the only viable Advanced Map it can solo adequately for the first few rounds is Spillway.
- Make use of Camo Priority if the defense is specifically weak against Camos.
- The base Ninja Monkey is the lowest-costing camo detector in the entire game; it is $90 less than a 0-0-2 Dart on Medium, and has a lot of relatively inexpensive anti-Camo countermeasures.
Building the Ascended Shadow[]
To effectively reach the necessary Pop Count, utilising the x/3/x Shinobi Buff on Master Bomber and Grandmaster Ninja is vital. With Maxed Shinobis both T5s can achieve similar pop counts throughout the rounds. With this in mind we can include the 20x 2/4/0 Bloon Sabotage Ninjas into the 100 Upgrade and $250,000 requirements. The top and bottom crosspaths have identical costs so we can always take the more preferable range upgrade from Top Path to help the Shinobis reach the carries.
0/2/4 Sticky Bomb is the most expensive crosspath, with 2/0/4 lagging only slightly behind. These are the most preferable to complete the cost requirement, as they also benefit from Shinobis to help deal with waves until the Paragon is complete. Alternatively 2/4/0 Bloon Sabotages can be built exclusively since the Active Ability can help with counting the number of ninjas placed.
Single Player[]
Ninja | Easy | Medium | Hard | Impoppable | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

Bloon Sabotage |
Cost | $6880 | $8100 | $8750 | $9720 |

Co-op[]
Playing with other players opens the potential for Multiple extra T5s to be fed to the Paragon. These fully contribute to the Upgrade Count and Cost requirements. Calculating the remaining values on Easy shows the Maximum amount to be spent.
Without Crosspaths the 5/0/0 Grandmaster Ninja, 0/5/0 Grand Saboteur, and 0/0/5 Master Bomber total at $150,095. This leaves $99,905 to be spent. 20 2/4/0 Bloon Sabotages cost $137,600 which more than makes up the difference. Together they more than make up the necesssary Upgrade Count requirement.
Thus, on all difficulties the requirements can be more than fulfilled by building the following:
- 2-Player: 3 Extra T5s + 20 2/4/0 Bloon Sabotages
- 3-Player + : 6/9 Extra T5s + 20 x/3/x Shinobi Tactics

“ | While Sticky Bomb still has issues we are investigating, this damage buff allows Sticky Bombs to destroy all regular MOABs from round 81 to 100 in a single bomb in standard games whether they are fortified or not. In addition since this damage runs off a timed function, somewhat similar to Alchemist's Unstable Concoction, we felt that adding a range increase to the Sticky attack similar to Concoction should give a better chance to actually explode before the target MOAB is destroyed by other towers. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- x-x-4 Sticky Bomb damage increased from 400 to 500.
- x-x-4 Sticky Bomb 'sticky attack' range increased to Ninja's range * 1.5.
- 25.0
“ | Ninja's Bloon Sabotage is often used in tricky rounds as a powerful slow with a long duration, so we have made a gentle price increase here to reflect that support strength. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Bloon Sabotage price increased from $5,000 → $5,200.
- 27.0
“ | To try and allow more strategic use Ninja's Sticky Bombs will now use the targeting of the main tower instead of always Strong. Additionally as they weren't feeling good enough in general Sticky Bombs will now deal a smaller amount of damage in an AoE to anything surrounding the main target. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Sticky Bomb now follows the tower's target priority for Sticky Bombs
- Master Bomber now follows the tower's target priority for Sticky Bombs
- Sticky Bombs now deals an additional AoE when they explode for 100 damage, 10 pierce and 40 AoE
- Master Bomber inherits this new AoE and increases damage to 300
- 28.0
“ | As ninja is the 'Camo Specialist' and has been since inception, it is the only tower that will unlock Camo Prioritization on the base tower. Master Bomber's main flash bomb has also been buffed in damage slightly leading into the new Ninja Paragon. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Ninja Monkey now gains the new Camo Prioritization filter
- Master Bomber Flash Bomb damage increased from 5 -> 10
- 31.0
“ | Grand Sabotage is extremely powerful in freeplay, but really boring outside of that one scaling mechanic. For a little more flavour with the shinobi mechanic, the T5 will now boost the potential of your shinobi army. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Grand Sabotage ability grants all your Shinobi on screen +5 range and +1 damage to MOABs
- 33.0
“ | Sticky Bomb feels like it is in a very strong point right now in a lot of situations, though flash bomb isn’t good enough without a great deal of support leading into it, this shift should open up for challenge viability especially in Alternate Bloon Rounds games. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Flash Bomb price reduced $2750 -> $2250
- Sticky Bomb price increased $4500 -> $5000
- 35.0
“ | Ninja's x5x ability side-benefit of buffing all x3x ninja doesn't quite pack enough punch. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Grand Sabo buff range bonus increased 5 -> 10 and moab bonus increased 1 -> 2
- 36.0
“ | Ironing out Caltrop inconsistency & power a little on top and bottom T5s, but also as frequently unused caltrops clutter up the screen and cause extra lag we want to balance out their lifespan to reduce the number always on screen and make them no longer last longer than the base Spike Factory. Ninja currently appears to be the least competitive paragon, & as it is also very similar in cost to the Navarch we feel that lowering Ninja into its own price range will fill a bit of a cost-gap and increase the effective value it has for the cost. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- 5-0-2 Caltrops pierce increased from 5 → 6
- Caltrops lifespan reduced from 70s → 35s
- Master Bomber's Caltrops damage increased 1 → 5
- Master Bomber's Caltrops gain +5 Ceramic damage on top
- Ascended Shadow cost reduced from $600,000 → $500,000
- 37.0
“ | We’re changing the Ninja Monkey Paragon’s focus as a fighter against camo, as we feel like a greater strength and tactical value against camo will be the full reveal of all camos rather than all camo removal. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |

- Ascended Shadow no longer strips camo from Bloons with every attack
- Ascended Shadow main attack gains bonus to camo +6

- Ascended Shadow Sticky Bomb Projectile gains bonus to camo +3200
- Ascended Shadow Sticky Bomb Explosion gains bonus to camo +700
- Ascended Shadow now deals 25% damage to all non-Boss MOABs that spawn
- 38.0
“ | We’re mindful that this has been in place since launch, but still think this change could lead to more balanced crosspath Ninja play for casual and for apex players. Ninja's 1xx feels like it does too much, granting both range and attack speed to all crosspaths, so these benefits are now being split apart. As Sticky feels like it’s doing a fair lot of work these days we’re somewhat reworking this path into a range path but taking away the free ‘bonus range’ that Sticky used to gain independent of the tower radius. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Ninja Discipline no longer grants +7 increased range
- Seeking Shuriken now grants +7 increased range
- Sticky Bomb base range increased from 40 → 55
- Sticky Bomb's sticky bomb no longer receives +50% extra range, instead matching base tower. Base range of the sticky bomb attack reduced from 60 → 55. Does not affect Master Bomber's master sticky bomb.
- 39.0
“ | Flash Bomb’s long time between bombs, without improvements on the main attack leaves this as quite a bad stepping stone, for now due to this long downtime we want to try increasing the stun duration. The recent bug fix for xx4 Sticky Stacking ended up hurting Master Bomber’s viability as it was relying on that bug to have any real single target impact, now that it can be balanced with intended functionality we’re trying out much higher damage per explosion with slower attacks for single target performance as it has Shinobi synergy to bring this rate back up. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Flash Bomb stun duration increased from (1s → 1.3s)
- Master Bomber sticky attack rate reduced (2s → 5s)
- Master Bomber sticky damage increased (1000 → 3000)
- Master Bomber sticky AoE damage increased (300 → 600)
“ | No changes here for now - given that it did feel behind the other paragons previously, however this is the only paragon that actually got stronger from the bug fix rather than weaker | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Ascended Shadow's overall Boss damage increased
- Ascended Shadow's Camo damage bonuses now properly scales with Paragon degrees when interacting with Bosses
- 40.0
“ | For an early game Distraction improvement the consistency of blowbacks is being averaged out more with increased minimum distance but reduced maximum, in many cases there would not actually be 250 units of track length in front of defenses to be blown back across anyway so the overall average distance is slightly lower. More at the mid to endgame we are also weakening distraction distance against Ceramics specifically as by this point Ninja have stacked so much speed and projectiles the consistency doesn’t matter anymore. Finally, distraction values for secondary projectiles are being modified, as Distraction chance as it has existed was never balanced around more than the main attack | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Distraction blowback range normalized (all attacks): 10-250 units → 100-150 units
- Distraction distance applies to Ceramics at 0.5x. Blowback range changed from 10-250 units to 50-75 units.
- 0-1-2 Caltrops distraction chance of caltrops reduced (15% → 10%)
- 0-1-3 Flash Bomb distraction chance of flash bomb increased (15% → 30%)
- 41.0
“ | Flash Bomb has pierce too excessive for Shinobi Tactics to do anything for it but then lacks any actual damage output, so this high pierce is trading in for greater damage. Master Bomber's MOAB stun was not changed when Flashbomb stun duration was previously increased, so it is now increasing to match | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Flash Bomb's flash bomb pierce reduced from 60 to 30. Also affects subsequent upgrades.
- Flash Bomb's flash bomb damage increased from 1 to 3. Also affects Sticky Bomb's flash bombs but not Master Bomber's flash bombs (10).
- Master Bomber's flash bomb MOAB-class stun time increased from 0.25s to 0.325s
- 42.0
“ | Bottom path Ninja never does anything with the main shuriken projectile past the xx1 upgrade leaving it inconsequential on higher tiers. Given that Flash Bombs can feel lacking without heavy support, we’re trying out a change that makes Flash Bomb Ninja scale better with attack speed and pierce as something of a combo-attacker. Overall, this feels pretty ‘right’ for ninjas and more importantly it’s cool and sometimes that’s what matters most. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Flash Bomb main Shuriken attack now deals +3 damage to stunned bloons
- Sticky Bomb main Shuriken attack now deals +3 damage to stickied bloons
- Sticky Bomb's sticky bomb impact damage reduced from 500 to 450
- Master Bomber main Shuriken attack now deals +9 damage to stunned bloons
- Master Bomber main Shuriken attack now deals +9 damage to stickied bloons
- Ascended Shadow main Shuriken attack now deals +15 damage to stunned bloons
- Ascended Shadow main Shuriken attack now deals +15 damage to stickied bloons
- 43.0
“ | While a great early game option, Ninja generally struggles with dominant crosspathing choices and also has relatively poor base tower value. Without going into every single change, T3s onward remain relatively unchanged with a lot of prices below T3 being moved around from less favorable crosspaths into better/higher tier upgrades. Ninja Paragon is very simple to use so unlock XP requirements for this and Wizard Paragon are swapping around so Ninja is the faster unlock. This increase will not affect players who have already unlocked it. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Ninja Monkey base cost reduced from $500 to $400
- Ninja Monkey attack cooldown reduced from 0.7s to 0.62s
- Ninja Discipline attack cooldown multiplier for all attacks changed from 0.62x to 0.70x. Shuriken attack cooldown remains 0.434s.

Trivia[]
- The Deadly Tranquility Monkey Knowledge grants the Ascended Shadow an extra shuriken and flash bomb per throw. This is possibly a bug, as the ability description doesn't mention it affecting the Ascended Shadow.
- Ninja Monkey is one out of the two non-hero towers in the game to pop Camo Bloons without any upgrades, the other being the Spike Factory.
- Neither tower is able to pop Camo Lead Bloons or DDTs without upgrades or external support.
- The Ninja Monkey is one of the six monkeys with a Paragon tier upgrade currently in the game.
- Every Ninja Monkey upgrade has an "s" in it's name somewhere.
- According to Ninja Kiwi's October 29th 2021 blog, the favorite pasttime of Ninja Monkeys is writing haikus.
- Ninja Kiwi confirmed on their 3rd June 2022 blog that Upper Path 3 Ninja masks are inspired by Oni masks from Japanese culture.
