Targets a specific bit of ground anywhere on the screen. Launches explosive mortar shells to that spot. Useful for placing far away from the track to make room for other towers.
~ Flash description

The Mortar Tower (Mortar Monkey in Bloons Monkey City) is a tower in the Bloons TD 5 generation. It retains its role from Bloons TD 4, with significant additions.

The Mortar Tower attacks by launching explosive shells over any distance to a target area, which is set by the player. Because the player can change its targeting directly, it can be made more effective through careful micromanagement. It can pop many Bloons at a time with its shells over a relatively large blast radius, at the cost of a slow attack speed. Additionally, it cannot pop Black Bloons, Zebra Bloons, Camo Bloons, or (in BMC) DDTs without upgrades.

Description[]

Mechanics[]

Targeting[]

The Mortar Tower's only targeting mode by default is Set Target. Using this allows the player to select the area where its shells will land. In the Flash versions, this is done by clicking on the Mortar Tower itself, while in the mobile versions, this is done by clicking the "Set Target" button. The default position is on top of the Mortar Tower.

In the mobile version of BTD5, using the Mortar Emplacement allows the Mortar Tower to switch to any of the standard target priorities: First, Last, Close, and Strong. As the Mortar Tower has infinite range, this allows it to auto-target Bloons from any distance.

  • First: Targets the Bloon closest to reaching the exit.
  • Last: Targets the Bloon furthest from reaching the exit.
  • Close: Targets the Bloon closest in proximity to the Mortar Tower.
  • Strong: Targets the Bloon of the highest rank. If multiple Bloons fit this criteria, prioritizes the one that is closest to reaching the exit.

Differences between BTD5 Flash and BTD Battles Flash[]

  • BUFF 3-X Bloon Buster costs less ($800 → $650).

Mobile version history[]

Previously, the Mortar Tower was not a popular tower. This was because compared to its flash counterpart, the Mortar Tower had a much smaller blast radius, which drastically hurt its reliability. Over the years, however, it has gained popularity through a set of buffs, particularly with Version 4.1's update, and has now become part of the meta. Even with a somewhat major nerf in Version 4.6, it still remains as one of many popular towers in the game. Popular loadouts include Ninja Farm Mortar, Tack Farm Mortar, and Bomb COBRA Mortar.

Initial Release
  • NERF Artillery Battery's Pop and Awe ability cannot damage or stun MOAB-Class Bloons.
3.1
  • BUFF Bigger Blast radius size increased.
  • BUFF Bloon Buster price decreased ($800 → $650).
  • NERF Signal Flare price increased ($500 → $700).
3.2
  • BUFF Artillery Battery's Pop and Awe ability now damages and stuns MOAB-Class Bloons, causing them to receive 5 seconds of burning damage and stunning MOABs for 5 seconds, BFBs for 2 seconds, and ZOMGs for 0.5 seconds.
3.9
  • BUFF Signal Flare price decreased ($700 → $550).
4.1
The Mortar is a useful tower, but perhaps not quite valuable enough in its current form to take up a tower slot. A big buff in it's blast radius and some sizable reductions in upgrade costs will hopefully change that.
~ "BTD Battles Update 4.1 - Big Balance Changes Incoming!"
  • BUFF Bigger Blast price decreased ($600 → $400).
  • BUFF The Big One price decreased ($10000 → $6000).
  • BUFF Artillery Battery price decreased ($9000 → $7000).
  • BUFF Blast radius size increased by 15% (Both 0-0 and 2-0).
4.3.1
Since the last round of balance changes, the Mortar has become much more popular recently and crept its way into the heart of the meta. Whilst we're currently quite happy with how it's balanced, the Big One upgrade is a little too powerful for the cost, so this increase will bring that more in line.
~ "BTD Battles Update 4.3.1 Balance Changes"
  • NERF The Big One price increased ($6000 → $7500).
4.6
The Ninja-Mortar strategy is still extremely popular in the current meta and we're seeing it a lot in the higher arenas. We've bumped up a couple of upgrade costs to hopefully encourage players to explore other options, whilst still keeping the Mortar a solid tower.
~ "BTD Battles Update 4.6 Balance Changes"
  • NERF Signal Flare price increased ($550 → $750).
  • NERF Artillery Battery price increased ($7000 → $8000).
6.11
  • NERF Burny Stuff price increased ($500 → $550).
6.13
  • NERF Burny Stuff price increased ($550 -> $750)
  • BUFF Signal Flare price decreased ($750 -> $550)

In Bloons Monkey City[]

The Mortar Monkey's population is increased by building Mortar Ranges, which are unlocked at City Level 5. Its upgrades can be researched by building the Ordnance and Munitions Support (Flash version) or Mortar Support (mobile version). Its tier 4 upgrades require building the Super-Bomb Research Centre and Heavy Artillery Factory respectively, in order to be researched.

It is favored on Volcano Terrain. In the Flash version, it is restricted on Caves Terrain when playing from the My Tracks menu, but is otherwise not restricted on any terrain.

It costs $750 normally, or $810 on Hardcore Mode.

  • The Mortar Tower is used as the icon for Defense Mode in BTD Battles.
  • The monkey operating the Mortar Tower when upgraded to Bloon Buster and The Big One wears the same outfit as the Glue Hose and Glue Striker.
  • In the Flash versions, the Mortar Tower does not play any explosion sounds when upgraded to Bigger Blast or Bloon Buster.
  • In the Flash version of BTD5, the Mortar Tower has two different portraits: one is used as the large portrait on the "Towers" menu and shows smoke coming out of the barrel, and the other does not have the smoke.
  • This is one of only three towers in the BTD5 generation that can remove camo, the others being the Monkey Engineer and Monkey Sub.
  • The Mortar Tower is one of only two towers from BTD4 that had its tier 3 and tier 4 upgrades split onto separate paths in BTD5, the other being the Tack Shooter.
  • Oddly, in the Flash version of BMC, the Mortar Tower defaults to facing right instead of up.
  • In older versions of BTD5, it was possible to have the Mortar Tower aim at the mouse in a similar manner to the Dartling Gun by holding the mouse button down. This bug has since been patched.
