Calls forth a relentless barrage of superstorms. Blasts all Bloon types for massive damage and blows them away from the exit.
~ In-game description

Monarch of Storms (Superstorm before Version 50.0) is the Tier 5 upgrade of Path 1 for the Druid in Bloons TD 6. It gains an additional super-tornado attack, which are summoned every 4.0s. The super-tornado blows away plenty of bloons and deals 120 damage to up to 200 regular bloons while also bounces off map borders, but consumes extra pierce against MOAB-Class Bloons (MOAB: 5, BFB: 15, ZOMG: 45, DDT: 8), although the total number of affected MOAB-class bloons rounds up. With a single super-tornado, it can blow away up to 40 MOABs, 14 BFBs, 25 DDTs, or 5 ZOMGs at once. Spawning a super-tornado automatically adds Ball Lightnings per 1 second in the front 180 degrees of it, creating even more overall damage. Supertornadoes blow back blimps at least 100 units, which has no limit, but ZOMGs are blown back for half the amount (at least 50 units) to prevent an infinite stall.

The Monarch of Storms upgrade also increases the damage from Heart of Thunder's lightning bolt from 3 to 30, and Ball Lightning's lightning bolts from 3 to 10. In addition, Monarch of Storms automatically gains camo detection, allowing it to see Camo Bloons including DDTs.

This upgrade costs $51,000 on Easy, $60,000 on Medium, $64,800 on Hard, and $72,000 on Impoppable.

Description[]

Overview[]

Monarch of Storms

Monarch of Storms

Monarch of Storms changes the Druid to wear a white cloak with blue trims around the hood, very white lightning patterns at the top of the hood, has a blue cape with white trims, and glue at the bottom of the front portion of the cloak. The cloak has a blue cloak rope securing it to the torso. The monkey stands on a cloud and holds a very large purple lightning bolt on his left hand (right hand in the upgrade portrait). Just like Ball Lightning, the Monarch of Storms has no pupils, instead having completely white eyes with pink outlines instead of blue.

Monarch of Storms gains the signature superstorm attack, hurling a giant tornado that blows back many bloons including MOAB-class bloons, albeit less than against ordinary bloons. These tornadoes deal 120 damage, and produce improved ball lightnings whose strikes deal 10 damage. Ordinary lightning and ball lightnings from the Monarch of Storms Druid both deal 10 damage each. Being the only true camo detector of the Druids, Monarch of Storms's attacks always can directly target Camo Bloons.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Monarch of Storms is a very expensive upgrade, but it produces powerful super-tornadoes capable of blowing back MOAB-class bloons a fair distance and deal high amount of damage to them. The super-tornadoes attack very slowly, and consume a lot more pierce versus stronger MOAB-class bloons, especially BFBs, ZOMGs, and DDTs. Despite the description of the Monarch of Storms stating that it deals "massive damage", it still severely lacks single-target damage, although it has decent crowd control. When given full Poplust buffs, a Monarch of Storms becomes a quite strong blimp staller.

Tips[]

  • The 5-0-2 crosspath is generally better than the 5-2-0, as it will gain a +10% attack speed bonus by default, and gains extra range. Its thorns are no longer its main source of damage, so shooting more of them becomes completely useless. Heart of Oak's degrow functionality is very situational, having a niche as a counter to Regrow Bloons since the arcs of lightning can remove Regrow properties, although the bonus pierce per life gained does improve the pierce of each super-tornado substantially if maximized, which is a very helpful attribute that can be used in any general situation where attack speed, and subsequently, the rate at which super-tornadoes are made, is of lower priority.
  • Pair with lots of Poplust Druids for a much more reliable blowback versus blimps. Even though Monarch of Storms itself can be reliable at blowback versus blimps, more blowbacks onto the same blimp inflict greater knockback, and in addition can also subsequently result in many more ball lightnings spawning out for huge damage.
  • Monarch of Storms can blowback blimps quite reliably while dealing relatively high damage to them on its own, although it struggle against BADs bloon. Add other defenses to pop the BADs like Spike Storm or MOAB Eliminator.
  • Glue and ice can be removed from any bloon including blimps by using a super-tornado. This isn't usually an issue, since Monarch of Storms would already do plenty of damage and stalling, which most glues and freezing does.
  • Monarch of Storms is able to freeze bloons with the ball lightning, and this extends to the additional lightning bolts if the ColdFrontIcon Cold Front MK is enabled.
  • In Boss Rush, Monarch of Storms is extremely useful for preventing leaks at the end of the track with its built-in camo detection and blowback of MOABs. It can make the difference of a few extra tiers if there is already a Paragon damaging the boss.

Version History[]

Balance Changes[]

Buffed to make it more useful for its expensive price. Arguably, the Version 23.0 buff had the greatest effect on making its main super-tornado attack much stronger, and therefore dramatically increased its blowback reliability against stronger targets. The Version 22.0 addition of bonus Ball Lightnings while the super-tornado projectile is still active has also increased the Superstorm's damage potential a fair bit. Version 28.0 also slightly reduced its price to make it more accessible in normal games. Version 30.0 brought a more substanial price buff to and adjusted the blowback distance down to ZOMGs to prevent the game from becoming a crawl.

10.0
  • BUFF Superstorm's Super Storm damage increased (5 → 12)
  • BUFF Superstorm's Ball Lightning damage increased (2 → 5)
  • BUFF Superstorm's Lightning damage increased (1 → 3)

Superstorm has been adjusted with a new feature to grant it a method of dealing continuous damage to the targets that it blows backwards. We know many of you will feel this needs much more work but please be patient as we will come back to it.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Superstorm's Storm now spawns Ball Lightnings in a 180 degree arc in front of it every second until the storm expires.
23.0
The most recent buff to Superstorm was great fun, but when spending pierce so quickly we wouldn't see many extra Ball Lightnings. Since many find Superstorm lacking in pierce overall, the 'extra' pierce consumptions for hitting larger targets have been reduced to make it more effective and more lightningey.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Superstorm's super-tornados' pierce consumption is now decreased for all MOAB-class bloons:
    • MOAB: 20 → 5
    • BFB: 50 → 20
    • ZOMG: 200 → 50
    • DDT: 50 → 10

As a 'druid buffing' hero, Obyn has in actuality been a bottom path druid buffing hero, so we've tweaked a couple extra levels to give more path specific bonuses to other druid paths that weren't benefiting as much from his wizened presence, regardless of whether your Obyn says "Fries" or "Clive". [...] Top path has had a number of buffs to help with both price and consistency in control over regular bloons through higher tiers. Superstorm has had a rather big price buff, however to prevent it locking up games in a boring stall state the blowback distance against ZOMGs has been halved (There may be disagreement here, but we see this Superstorm change as a double positive).

Now that Tornadoes are one of the more popular Bloon Stall choices we looked more into its upgrade progression, tornado projectile speed is being reduced as a benefit to Ball Lightning to prevent tornado outpacing the lightning ball so quickly, and to more suit it as a Cold/Magic themed upgrade plus differentiate from similar supports the weaknesses are changing. More directly to Ball Lightning we feel it needs a considerably higher freeze duration for the freeze to matter as it casts slowly. [...]

  • Change Affected by Druid of the Storm tornado reworks
  • BUFF Affected by Ball Lightning freeze buff

Superstorm gets a fresh coat of paint, including a new name! The Superstorm Tornadoes last far longer and rebound off of map borders, all while still spewing out additional Ball Lightning projectiles the entire time to fill the screen!

Trivia[]

  • Ninja Kiwi says that the automatic camo detection for the Monarch of Storms is intentional and is not a bug.
  • This upgrade holds the title for the tower with the most number of unique attacks (except true sun god with sacrifices).
    • Taking crosspathing into account, Archmage with Wall of Fire has as many unique attacks as Monarch of Storms, with each having 5 different attacks.
  • This is the only Tier 5 upgrade for the Druid that retains its original white fur.
  • Prior to the Version 10.0 damage buff, a Monarch of Storms could have the potential to create a Regrow Farm, similar to its predecessor in BTD5. With Regrow Farming, Regrowth bloons are sent back and split into multiple bloons and then regenerate back to their original form before they reach the tower again, multiplying again and again. It is no longer possible in a real game as of said update due to its tornado dealing more damage than the bloons can regenerate.
  • This is the only Tier 5 upgrade for the Druid that does not show the face of the Druid in the upgrade thumbnail.
  • Monarch of Storms Druid may be based on Zeus, the Greek god of thunder.
  • The sprite for the supertornado projectile that Monarch of Storms produces is noticeably different from its BTDB2 counterpart, with the former being smaller and looking more like the normal tornadoes produced by Druid of the Storm.
