“ | A magical trident throwing Monkey of the sea that calls upon the power of the depths for damage, support, or Bloon clean up. Amphibious, but thrives in water. | ” |
~ In-game description |
Mermonkey is a new magic class tower that was added in Bloons TD 6 in the Version 44.0. Mermonkey can be placed both on land and on water. This tower is unlockable by accumulating pop counts in the same way as Dartling Gunner and Beast Handler, being unlocked after 3,000,000 pops.
The base Mermonkey throws tridents every 1.2s with two pierce, creating a small "stab" of damage each time it hits a bloon, similar to a Dartling's Hydra Rocket Pods upgrade, and can be increased with external pierce buffs. The "stab" has 6 radius, does 2 damage and has 3 "impacts" (i.e. cannot receive external pierce buffs). Mermonkey has 28 base range if placed on land, but is increased by 25% if placed on water, increasing it to 35. Trident has a projectile speed of 200 and projectile lifespan of 0.5s.
Mermonkey has three upgrade paths, each path having 5 upgrades that improve the Mermonkey's power. Along the Path 1 upgrades, the Mermonkey focuses on attacking efficiently, and can unleash an abyssal monster to lash at bloons with its tentacles, plus bonus percentage pierce to nearby towers. Path 2 upgrades focus on piercing many bloons at once, plus embracing the power of freezing waves to the Mermonkey's advantage. Path 3 focuses on the power of the mind, allowing the detection of Camo Bloons, enhancing the range of interconnected Mermonkeys of superior intellect, and attract bloons towards a spiralling aura by generating waves of music.
It costs $510 on Easy, $600 on Medium, $650 on Hard, and $720 on Impoppable.
Description[]
The Mermonkey appears as a cyan toned Monkey with a fish-like tail, gills, and purple growths on it's head. It wields a trident and sits on a black rock. The top path Mermonkey fights side by side with a mysterious sea creature that attacks in all directions, slows Bloons down with inky tridents, and enhances all towers within a radius with a percentage pierce increase. Middle path gives ability to send freezing waves that get stronger the further they travel, eventually crashing to form a T-shaped attack. Additionally, middle path Mermonkey deals increased damage to any Frozen targets, and with the Ice Jet ability, fires a quick barrage of bouncing ice projectiles. The bottom path lures Bloons off track with an irresistible melody to dance around the Mermonkey for a short time while also detonating any damage-over-time effects on those Bloons to deal all the remaining DoT immediately.
It was first announced on Ninja Kiwi's Version 41.0 update notes and its placeholder name was "Mermonkey Tower" is confirmed on Ninja Kiwi's Version 42.0 patch notes. Mermonkey Tower is a "non-military water unit". It is also the third water tower ever in the game (not including heroes like Admiral Brickell or Pat Fusty). Ninja Kiwi confirmed its real name, Mermonkey, in their 12th July 2024 blog; in the same blog, they announced that the Mermonkey will be unlocked by pops or optionally with an in-app purchase.

Strategy[]

Summary[]
Mermonkey is a highly synergetic tower that has unique synergies with various towers. It has many upgrades for freezing, granting extra pierce buffs, and forced handling of bloons. The base tower is also affordable on the first round with decent statistics.
Each of the Mermonkey's upgrades offer a variety of support for the defenses, alongside a decent amount of damage. Top path's upgrades offer bonus pierce for nearby towers, alongside dealing high base damage. Middle path deals a lot of freezing damage, and good synergies with Ice Monkeys. The bottom path's upgrades are a great combo with towers that attack in a radius such as Ice Monkeys or Tack Shooters, as the Mermonkey's call can keep any affected Bloons in a singular place for a long time.
Tips[]
- Water-placed Mermonkeys are treated as water towers, so they can be buffed by water-exclusive buffs like Admiral Brickell and Carrier Flagship.
- While subtle, the Mermonkey is left-handed, meaning that the spawn point for the thrown tridents are offset to the left of the center, not the right.
- The bottom path has a massive synergy with damage-over-time towers such as The Bloon Solver or Glaive Lord, thanks to the song detonating the DoT, allowing for massive damage to be applied per shot. This effect has been confirmed to NOT be a bug by the developers on Reddit.
- Placement on land compared to water only affects the range of the Mermonkey, aside from not counting as a water tower. In most cases, it is preferrable to place the Mermonkey on water to access the extra range when placed on water. However, some land spots offer a better location for the Mermonkey to utilize its direct attacks and influencial buffs.
Monkey Knowledge[]
Note: The Mermonkey has no Monkey Knowledge exclusive to itself, not even the universal Magic MK Points.
This section displays Monkey Knowledge that has effects on Mermonkey and its changes when compared to one by default:
- Monkey Education: All Monkeys XP earn rate increased by 8%.
- Better Sell Deals: All Monkeys sell for 5% more. Increases sell potency from 70% to 75%.
- Veteran Monkey Training: All Monkeys reload time reduced by 3%.
- Global Ability Cooldowns: All Ability cooldowns for all Monkeys reduced by 3%.

Trivia[]
- Mermonkey Tower is the first non-military non-hero aquatic tower in Bloons TD 6 and of all of the mainline Bloons TD franchise.
- It is also the third amphibious tower of all of the mainline Bloons TD franchise, the first being Pat Fusty, followed by Ocean Guardian Obyn in Bloons TD Battles 2 specifically.
- The Profile Banner "Beneath the Waters" and a scene item from Bloons Pop! depict mermonkeys, both existing before Mermonkeys became playable towers.
- Since its debut in Version 44.0, it is the only tower in BTD6 to not have a pre-assigned hotkey; it can be set manually by the player, however.
- In the developer's build of Version 44.0, which is publicly visible via early-access videos, the upgrade portraits for Abyss Dweller, Abyssal Warrior, Lord of the Abyss, Popseidon, Alluring Melody, and The Final Harmonic are all replaced with placeholders of the in-game model plus a pure-color grey rectangle with the text "Mermonkey [crosspath_combo]". For example, Alluring Melody's filler text in the upgrade portrait is "Mermonkey 003".
- Popseidon is the only Path 2 Mermonkey upgrade with a filler upgrade portrait.
- Some of the Mermonkey's upgrades are similar to the Bloonchipper, specifically the Path 3's forced repositioning of bloons.
- Mermonkey is the fourth tower to not have brown fur, the others being the Ice Monkey , the Alchemist, and the Druid.
- Mermonkey is the first tower released after Big Monkey Towers Option to be a candidate for the Chunky Monkeys achievement (which unlocks Big Monkey Towers Option).
- According to Rohan, a Ninja Kiwi employee, on Ninja Kiwi Discord, he confirmed that the trident area-of-effect is unable to be affected by pierce buffs, but the trident projectile can. He said the comment "The trident's prongs are capped but the main pierce itself is buffable" on August 5th 2024 5:52pm NZST.
- Arctic Knight and Popseidon are the only Mermonkeys to wield true tridents. Other Mermonkeys actually use spear-like staffs, except for X-X-3+ Mermonkeys, who use thicker spears made out of heart-shaped gems.
- Before Version 44.1 patched gaining pops from Quests, players have found that it is very quick to get the required pops of Unlock By Pops towers (such as Mermonkey, but also Beast Handler and Dartling) by playing MOAB Madness multiple times. One successful run would net about 1M pops, each game taking about up to about 2 minutes on Fast Forward (but an average of about 4 minutes per game), taking just 3 games and up to 6 minutes to get all the pops.
- Another option was to play the Bloons TD 6 Birthday Party Quest, yet this doesn't give as many pops, even with the Party BAD.
Ninja Kiwi Blogs[]
- According to Ninja Kiwi's 26th April 2024 blog, a lot of heroes and towers are excited for the Mermonkey. Brickell and Pat are the most excited of the heroes to meet the Mermonkey, and same with Monkey Sub and Monkey Buccaneer for the towers who are excited for Mermonkey. The rest of the blogpost talks about how Benjamin and Etienne are excited for Rosalia's (then referred to as Jetpack) arrival, and the Engineer Monkey is excited to talk about technological enhancements with her.
- According to Ninja Kiwi’s 2nd August 2024 blog, Mermonkeys and middle-path Monkey Buccaneers have a friendly sibling rivalry together.
- Several things were revealed in the 9th August 2024 blog:
- Luminous Cove is "just one of many hidden entrances" to Monklantis.
- It is implied that Mermonkeys do not believe in the Sun God.
- Mermonkeys are able to be given legs and walk on land through the use of magic.
- However, the 16th August 2024 blog implies that they prefer not to for whatever reason, and it would be much better for them to have structures on land adapted to their aquatic nature.
- The 0-5-0 Mermonkey is not the true Popseidon; it simply channels his power, similar to how Sun Avatars work.
- Mermonkeys were introduced to the surface when Ocean Obyn mentioned he might be able to make contact with Monklantis, after which the monkeys went on a mission to go say hi. The meeting was "rough at first", but Ocean Obyn managed to calm things down, and an alliance was formed quickly.
- According to Ninja Kiwi's 23rd August 2024 blog, Mermonkeys have their own set of deities that watch over the sea, separate to the religion of the Sun Temple.
- According to Ninja Kiwi's 23rd August 2024 blog, the most difficult of the Mermonkey upgrades to implement before Mermonkey's initial release in Version 44.0 was the Bloon Trance upgrade path, more specifically the various interactions with "other tower states and subtowers".
- According to Ninja Kiwi's 6th September 2024 blog, several things were revealed:
- The Mermonkeys are grateful for Beast Handlers taking care of aquatic beasts with love and care.
- Mermonkeys are capable of walking on their fins, just harder than walking with feet.
