“ | Freezes bloons in its burst radius for a short time. Frozen bloons are immune to sharp objects. | ” |
~ Flash description |
The Ice Tower (Ice Monkey in BMC) is a tower in Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City. It retains its role from Bloons TD 4, with significant additions.
The Ice Tower attacks by emitting a short-range area of effect that freezes Bloons on contact. While frozen, Bloons cannot be popped by sharp projectiles from other towers. It does not deal damage by itself without upgrades, it has no effect on White Bloons, Zebra Bloons, or MOAB-Class Bloons, and it cannot detect Camo Bloons.

Mechanics[]
When Bloons are within its range, the Ice Tower attacks every few seconds by emitting a freezing area of effect that freezes nearby Bloons. Frozen Bloons are immobile and frozen Regrow Bloons cannot regenerate, but they also become immune to sharp projectiles, such as darts, tacks, or shurikens. The freeze effect only applies to the outer layer of a Bloon, and wears off if the layer is popped, unless the Ice Tower has been upgraded to Deep Freeze. If not popped, Bloons will thaw out on their own after 1.43 seconds.
In all games except the mobile version of BTD Battles, the Ice Tower has infinite pierce, allowing it to freeze an unlimited number of Bloons within its range.
When sacrificed to the Temple of the Monkey God, the Temple gains a unique attack that launches exploding ice projectiles, which damage and freeze Bloons hit by the explosion. The freeze duration, explosion size, and number of layers frozen depend on the total cash value of Ice Towers sacrificed to it.
Targeting[]
Because the Ice Tower uses a radial attack, it does not have any targeting options.
In the Flash versions, the Ice Tower will not attempt to attack White Bloons or Zebra Bloons unless it has the ability to freeze and/or damage them through an external modifier, such as a Monkey Intelligence Bureau.
Upgrades[]
Path 1[]
Enhanced Freeze COST: $190 / $225 / $245 / $270 UNLOCK: 90 XP
Description: This enhanced Ice Tower has a larger freeze area and freezes bloons for longer.
Effect: Increases range by 15 units and freeze duration by 0.57s. |
Snap Freeze COST: $340 / $400 / $430 / $480 UNLOCK: 820 XP
Description: The tower freezes so fast the bloons pop once before freezing.
Effect: Bloons take 1 layer of damage before freezing. In the Flash versions, the damage is dealt after applying Permafrost and Ice Shards, meaning Ice Shards will activate immediately upon freezing. |
Arctic Wind COST: $5,525 / $6,500 / $7,020 / $7,800 UNLOCK: 3,050 XP
Description: Super cold aura that slows all bloons that come near the tower. In addition the regular freeze effect of this tower has much larger area.
Effect: Increases range by 30 units. All Bloons are slowed to 25% speed (33% speed in the Flash versions) while within the Ice Tower's range. In the mobile versions, the slowing effect lasts for between 1.95 and 2 seconds after Bloons exit its range. Cannot slow Camo Bloons in the Flash versions, even when given Camo detection. |
Viral Frost COST: $5,100 / $6,000 / $6,480 / $7,200 UNLOCK: 17,445 XP
Description: Bloons are frozen so cold that they freeze other bloons that come in contact with them, spreading the freeze like a virus.
Effect: Allows frozen Bloons to freeze other Bloons that touch them, including Camo Bloons, but not White Bloons or Zebra Bloons even when under the influence of a Monkey Intelligence Bureau or an equivalent effect. In BTD Battles Mobile, the Ice Tower also gains the ability to pop White Bloons and Zebra Bloons, gains Camo detection, and strips Camo from affected Bloons. |
Path 2[]
Permafrost COST: $85 / $100 / $110 / $120 UNLOCK: 325 XP
Description: Makes the bloons so cold that they move slowly even after thawing out.
Effect: Bloons move at half speed after thawing out until the affected layer is popped. |
Deep Freeze COST: $295 / $350 / $380 / $420 UNLOCK: 1,340 XP
Description: Freezes 2 layers of bloons instead of 1.
Effect: Allows frozen Bloons to remain frozen if one layer is popped, and allows Permafrost to affect two layers instead of one. |
Ice Shards COST: $1,700 / $2,000 / $2,160 / $2,400 UNLOCK: 5,160 XP
Description: Creates razor sharp pieces of ice on frozen bloons, that when popped, fly out and pop more nearby bloons.
Effect: Frozen Bloons launch a burst of 5 shards in random directions for each frozen layer popped (up to 10 shards total). Each shard deals 1 Shatter (Sharp in BTD Battles Flash) damage and has 1 pierce. Shards cannot have their pierce increased in the Flash versions. |
Absolute Zero COST: $1,700 / $2,000 / $2,160 / $2,400 UNLOCK: 31,275 XP
Description: Absolute Zero Ability: freezes the entire screen of bloons for 4 seconds. Does not affect MOAB-class bloons.
Effect: Gains an Activated Ability that freezes all Bloons on-screen, including White Bloons, Zebra Bloons, and Camo Bloons, lasting for 4 seconds. Applies the effects of Permafrost and Deep Freeze to affected Bloons, but not Ice Shards. In the mobile versions, this ability applies a special version of Permafrost to MOAB-Class Bloons (including Boss Bloons), making them move at half speed for 4 seconds as well. |
General differences between the Flash versions and mobile versions[]
Compared to other towers, the Ice Tower has some of the most substantial differences between the Flash versions and mobile versions.
- Base attack cooldown is longer (2.1 → 2.43).
- Base attack cannot re-freeze frozen Bloons.
- Base attack cannot target White Bloons or Zebra Bloons by default.
- Snap Freeze can damage MOAB-Class Bloons.
- Arctic Wind can slow Camo Bloons if the Ice Tower is given camo detection.
- Arctic Wind slows Bloons within its radius more (to 33% → to 25%).
- Arctic Wind's slowing effect lasts for 1.95-2 seconds after Bloons exit its range.
- Deep Freeze does not freeze or apply Permafrost to White Bloons or Zebra Bloons that spawn as children from other Bloons, even when under the influence of a Monkey Intelligence Bureau or an equivalent effect.
- Ice Shards does not activate immediately upon freezing when upgraded to Snap Freeze.
- Absolute Zero Ability slows all MOAB-Class Bloons on-screen to half speed for 4 seconds, including Boss Bloons.
In Bloons TD 5[]
The Ice Tower is unlocked at rank 8. Its tier 4 upgrades are unlocked at rank 26 in the Flash version, or rank 27 in the mobile version. It is one of the ten towers that can be used in Ten mode.

Differences between BTD5 Flash and BTD Battles Flash[]
- X-3 Ice Shards shard damage type changed (Shatter → Sharp), meaning its shards can no longer pop frozen Bloons.
Mobile version history[]
Ice Tower has mixed popularity. While it is often not used due to hindering towers that can't pop frozen bloons, whenever it is used the Ice Tower is most often used for its Absolute Zero upgrade, which in this game can slow down MOAB-Class Bloons to half speed, similar to Sabotage Supply Lines but at a lower cost. However, the other upgrades are almost never as frequently used, therefore many of the upgrades other than Absolute Zero have been buffed through various updates. Some fairly popular load outs that use the Ice Tower are Dart Farm Ice, Apprentice Farm Ice, Ninja Village/Mortar/Farm Ice, Dartling Farm Ice, and Heli Farm Ice.
Strangely enough, the Ice Tower has received very few buffs or nerfs. While it technically has received more buffs than nerfs, the Absolute Zero nerf is more prevalent compared to its buffs received.
- 3.5
- Ice Tower's freeze effect now hits Frozen Bloons, though freezing the same bloon multiple times will not stack freeze time.
- 3.6
- Juggernaut can pop frozen bloons.
- 4.6
“ | It's a tale of two halves for the Ice Tower. We very rarely see the first path upgraded to max and this is likely down to the fact that it's not really worth the cost. Allowing Viral Frost to pop white/zebra bloons should help with that. On the flip side, Absolute Zero is currently too easy to sell and rebuy to infinitely slow down bloons, which can render a costly rush completely useless. We've bumped up the price to help counter that. | ” |

Trivia[]
- The Ice Tower's infinite pierce in the Flash versions seems to be a bug: its base pierce is set to 50 (40 prior to a supposed balance change in 2013[3]), but due to a programming error, its pierce is not deducted when Bloons are hit by the attack. In the mobile versions of BTD5 and BMC, its infinite pierce appears to be intentional.
- In the now gone btd5 website, an image showcasing the tower screen had a difference in Ice Tower's upgrade paths; Ice Shards and Arctic Wind were swapped. It is unknown why they were changed to their final locations.
- This is the first game where the Ice Tower is a monkey instead of a simple ice ball.
