The latest iPhone instalment from the Bloons franchise is here, with brand new, never before seen features exclusive to the iPhone / iPod Touch.

Hot Air Bloon iOS was an iOS game based on the flash version of Ninja Kiwi's Hot Air Bloon. It never released on Android. It was developed by Digital Goldfish (now part of Ninja Kiwi) and released in the App Store on November 3, 2010. Though the game shared the same core gameplay as its flash component, it had a new gamemode on top of the classic endless mode, providing a significantly expanded storyline, containing an all new map selection, enemy roster, lives system, and new boss battles.

Because of compatibility issues and low demand for the game to run on modern devices, Ninja Kiwi removed Hot Air Bloon from the App Store at an unknown date between September 2018 and April 2019 [2] . Until recently, only a few app-store screenshots and a single trailer were left to provide insight into what gameplay may have been like along with very limited footage. As of 1/21/2023, the game has been dumped to archive.org, and three days later on 1/24/2023, the app was cracked, allowing it to be ran today on iOS devices between iOS 3.1 and iOS 10.

As of 12 July 2012, there were 83 reviews that give Hot Air Bloon iOS an average rating of 2.5/5 stars.[3]

Gameplay[]

Game Postcard Showing Basic Gameplay with Lives, Enemies, A hostile Monkey Ace, and More. [5]

The premise of Hot Air Bloon iOS is to save your female monkey companion (Damsel Monkey) who has been abducted by the Sinister Monkey Baron.[6] You must pilot a blimp through seven different regions and face off against unique bosses. [7]

The core gameplay of Hot Air Bloon iOS is similar to the Flash version in that it is a horizontal scroller where the player is tasked with navigating a monkey hanging from a blimp through an ever-accelerating series of obstacles while popping as many bloons as possible. Players tap and hold the screen to rise and let go to float down. Despite there being multiple colors of bloons, each bloon popped will offer one point. The Blimp will automatically move rightward. Similar to the flash version, there is an endless mode. There are also obstacles like clouds, trees, enemies, and potentially more that will hit and damage the Hot Air Bloon.

Unlike the Flash Version, however, there is also a story mode composed of seven levels, each with four stages. While some of those stages only have obstacles, other stages have a unique enemy or mechanic to deal with, and the final stage of each level has a boss to contend with. There are also lives which let the player try a stage within a level again. Lose too many lives and the player is sent back to the start of the level. There is also a mechanic to regain a single life via popping enough bloons, which varies between different levels. In addition, there are enemies like crows, bees, monkey aces, and dart-throwing monkeys that attack your Hot Air Bloon. There are also bosses, which include a monkey held up by bloons, a wasp queen, a pyramid with mummies, and the Baron Blimp. Pops are not carried over between stages, and like the flash version, stages are partially procedurally generated in terms of obstacles and enemies. Levels can also not be replayed after beating them, requiring multiple saves to replay previous levels. If the player beats the game on a save, then that save can only replay the final level unless they replace the save with a new one.

Regardless of whether the player plays on Classic or Story mode, there is also a soundtrack included in the game by default, not present in the original Flash version.

Strategy[]

Hot Air Bloon iOS's control scheme is largely similar to the original Flash version, where a player controls a monkey riding a hot air bloon to go up and down by holding and releasing a button. Where Hot Air Bloon deviates in its campaign is with the introduction of lives, encouraging players to be careful with how they play. If they mess up, they will be sent to the start of a level.

Controlling the blimp requires a player to be aware of their surroundings. They should not go too high or too low, and should try to hit as many bloons as possible to gain more points to earn more lives, as lives are earned every 100 bloons popped. Players should also be wary of enemies throughout a stage, as they can force a player to move through tight gaps. During a boss stage, players should be careful to not take too many hits, as they will die after taking 10 hits. If the player is given an option to shoot at a boss, they should account for the projectile dropping in height the further it travels.

For strategy on a specific level or stage, see the list of levels below.

Known Bugs[]

  • Exiting the app after dying but before tapping the screen will let the player keep their lives.
  • After dying to a level, it will continue to generate more bloons for a few seconds visually. This even affects boss levels, and levels without normal bloons, but has no gameplay effect.
  • Squashing a Wasp will occasionally retain their hitbox in motion, causing the player to die from something invisible.
  • On rare occasions, Level 6's Boss Stage may visually appear like the monkey is in the way of damage, but does not die. This glitch is purely visual.
  • The seventh boss stage may sometimes bug out, and not have the player, the boss, or both make progress on the progress bar until a minute passes. This can result in the player amassing unrealistic amounts of speed.

Trivia[]

  • The Monkey Baron and his Minions are the first and only instance of Monkeys directly attacking each other in the Bloons series. Though we do see Monkeys engaging in indirect bloon warfare with each other in multiple instances such as BTD Battles, Bloons Monkey City, and Bloons Card Storm.
  • This is the second time a female monkey appears in the Bloons series, with the Monkey Princess appearing in this game in 2010, as technically the Monkey Princess appears unnamed in Bloons Festive Fun.
  • The Whale and Wasp Boss are a rare instance of non-Monkey animals in the Bloons series, excluding the appearance of cosmetic birds and crows in other games. Other non-Monkeys include the Beekeeper, Meerkat Spy, Radadactyl, and more.
  • Hot Air Bloon iOS is one of the few instances where a Bloons game were directly given away for free as part of a promotion. In a Toucharcade forum post, Digital Goldfish held a contest to find the best name for the main antagonist, with the 10 best submissions being awarded a free code for the game. There were not many submissions for the contest, so it likely meant all participants received a code. The names pitched include "Cornelius", "Colleen", "Mongishta", and "EviMon".[8]
  • The Wasp enemy in Hot Air Bloon iOS are referred to as wasp not only in the game itself, but also in the sound files for the game. There is one exception to this though, as in the code, they are referred to as bees.
    • If the wasp enemy are classified as bees because of their code name, this is the second time Bees appear in the Bloons series. The first was the Bee Bloon in Bloons 2 released two months earlier. Later Bees would return as a Monkey ally through the Beekeeper.
  • According to Ninja Kiwi's 5th November 2021 blog, the App Store version of Bloons and Hot Air Bloon were removed due to newer devices and operating systems having compatibility issues with both games, and the final decision was to remove them.
    • This is despite Bloons 2 Mobile and Bloons TD Mobile also being 32-bit apps that cannot run past iOS 10, alongside other 32-bit apps that were not delisted.
  • The default amount of pops shown in postcard cutscenes in this game is 1000 pops. This is close to the number counter of the Blimp in the "how to play" section of the flash version, which is 1024.
