Lightning demonstration on Koru with a 2-0-2 Druid

Heart of Thunder is the 2nd upgrade of Path 1 for the Druid in Bloons TD Battles 2. It has much similarities to its BTD6 counterpart prior to BTD6 Version 33.0, the only real difference being the mere attack cooldown difference.

In addition to the hardened thorns, Heart of Thunder allows the Druid to shoot lightning bolts, similar to a 2-x Monkey Apprentice in BTD5. Unlike earlier games, which instantaneously hit a certain number of targets in a single attack, the Heart of Thunder's lightning works in a fork-by-fork basis, hitting a single target and then recursively striking 2 more bloons over brief intervals up to an extent. More specifically, it forks a single bloon which then forks up to 2 bloons per lightning bolt up to 5 times. As a result, each lightning attack can hit a total of up to 31 bloons. If a particular lightning fork fails to find a target within its seeking range, it ceases to hit more bloons.

Lightning bolts are shot every 2.2 seconds, deal 1 damage, and bolts target bloons with lightning behavior when seeking new targets. Lightning seeks bloons within up to 43 units (rather than 83 in BTD6) of range. But unlike in BTD6, the lightning in BTDB2 has no delay to fork to all its new targets, and therefore is more consistent to hit nearby targets.

Although the Druid's thorns keep the Normal damage type, bolts cannot affect Purple Bloons. Lightning bolts cannot increase pierce by any means but can accept any other external buff.

It costs $900.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

The lightning from Heart of Thunder provides the Druid with a lot of grouped popping power. Strategies for the BTDB1 Apprentice Lightning Bolt upgrade should be fairly similar, but given the very different spawning algorithm for Druid lightning it will give starkly different results depending on target priority.

Tips[]

  • Heart of Thunder is affected by speed benefits from Heart of Vengeance and Druid of Wrath.
  • The general use of Heart of Thunder in this game is to tank substantial lives with Heart of Vengeance in the early-game and then use Heart of Thunder to minimize life loss after achieving the optimal net life loss, in this case 80 net lost lives (= 70 lives left).
  • Lightning can benefit off the Heart of Oak upgrade to minimize the threat of Regrow properties.

Version History[]

Initially bugged, it had its price decreased to encourage viability of Druid and slightly compensate for very early bugs related to its relability. However, as the evolution of Druid loadouts were raised, starting with Druid-Sub-Ice and later Druid-Sub-Farm, the power of Lightning in Druid early-game strategies began to shine. As a result, it has received very small balance changes overall.

    • Overall price adjustment is $0, due to Hard Thorns (+$100)
Druid of the Jungle very recently received a big nerf and while it certainly still is strong, we’re not yet convinced that it needs any more significant changes. For now we’ve decided to just make some small price adjustments. With these changes, it’ll now be slightly more expensive to quickly and easily buy 1xx on your 030 Druids as a very cheap option to strengthen your defense.
