“ | Upgraded weapons. Also automatically calls in 3 more Comanches. Permanently. | ” |
~ In-game description |
The Comanche Commander (sometimes shortened to simply Comanche or Comcom) is the Tier 5 upgrade for Path 3 for the Heli Pilot in Bloons TD 6. It permanently calls in 3 powerful mini-Comanche helicopters with improved damage for all attacks. The mini helicopters will initially spawn under the main helicopter. The main Comanche's darts deals 3 damage with 3 pierce, while the mini-Comanches' darts deal 2 damage with 4 pierce. Both missiles deal 15 damage plus +2 to ceramics and +8 to moabs. Main helicopters missiles have 30 pierce while mini-Comanche missiles have 80 pierce. The main helicopter's movement speed increases by 25%, now traveling at 50 units/second.
Due to the mini helicopters being considered sub-towers, they do not receive Alchemist or Overclock buffs.
This upgrade costs $27,200 on Easy, $32,000 on Medium, $34,560 on Hard, and $38,400 on Impoppable.

As its name suggests, the Comanche Commander is based on the RAH-66 stealth helicopter, outfitted with desert tan camouflage, green chevron wing emblems, and yellow stripes on its blades. The mini-helicopters are similar, but do not have wing emblems.
Mini-Comanche helicopters are now permanently summoned, and all helicopters have greatly improved overall DPS.
Targeting Priorities[]
Comanche Commander utilizes touch-based mobility and self-mobility to move around the screen with different flight targetings. Its main attack shoots straight movement projectiles, which originate from the Heli Pilot with its independent range like an ordinary tower.
- Follow Touch / Follow Mouse: Moves to where the player taps. On desktop versions, Follow Touch instead becomes Follow Mouse, which will make the Heli Pilot move to wherever the cursor is currently at.
- Lock In Place: Stops the Heli Pilot where it is when the Target Priority is selected. Can be adjusted to choose a different locked location.
- Patrol: Patrols between two spots chosen by the player. Can be adjusted to choose different points.
- Pursuit: Equivalent to the target priority First, except the Heli Pilot will follow in front of the bloons while shooting them. It is unlocked with the purchase of the second upgrade on the first path, with the same name as the target priority. Once upgraded to the respective upgrade, it automatically switches to this target priority.
Both the Heli Pilot's main attacks and mini-Comanches always default on First based on the range of the helicopters' weaponry. The shove effect is locked on Close.
Mini-Comanches are always set to the same flight option as the parent Comanche. They will behave in the following manner if set to a particular flight targeting:
- Follow Touch / Follow Mouse: Moves to where the player taps. On desktop versions, Follow Touch instead becomes Follow Mouse, which will make the mini-Comanches move to wherever the cursor is currently at. If no cursor/touch is involved, the mini-Comanches stay underneath where the parent Comanche is.
- Lock In Place: Stops the mini-Comanches where it is when the Target Priority is selected. Can be adjusted to choose a different locked location. Will always travel towards the locked location.
- Patrol: Patrols between two spots chosen by the player. Can be adjusted to choose different points. Will always travel between two spots.
- Pursuit: Equivalent to the target priority First, except the mini-Comanches will follow in front of the bloons while shooting them. It is unlocked with the purchase of the second upgrade on the first path, with the same name as the target priority.

Strategy[]
Summary[]
Comanche Commander was once one of the strongest towers in the game, by exploiting game-breaking bugs related to Alchemist buffs. While it has fallen in favor after bug fixes, it has recently become recognized as a borderline usable tower due to its synergy with Gwendolin or Pat Fusty. Also, the mini helis are directly benefited by towers capable of inflicting bloon debuffs such as Super Brittle and Glue Strike. But recently, with Geraldo, Comanche Commander can be a budget alternative of Apache Prime, being much cheaper while still dealing comparable or sometimes better damage output.
Compared to an Apache Prime, there are significant differences that define their usage and viability.
Transition from Tier 4 Upgrade[]
In spite of Comanche Commander being close to $20k cheaper to afford, its Tier 4 upgrade (Comanche Defense) is highly underpowered for its price, even when backed up by its regular sets of incoming mini-Comanches. Conversely, Apache Dartship is able to solo up to the early 80s, which excluding Impoppable prices with no farming, allows Apache Prime to be easily afforded if planned properly. However, Apache Dartship can be easily overwhelmed in early 80s rounds due to the high amount of super ceramics and, while somewhat minor, cannot knockback blimps, while Comanche Commander can easily be afforded in round 70s or round 80 and Comanche Defense can do comparable amount of damage output compare to Apache Dartship and a little bit of support with proper buffing.
Projectiles vs Damage[]
Due to the nature of Comanche being inherently weak, it also heavily relies on a hero to buff itself. This is restricted to Pat, Gwendolin, or Geraldo. On the other hand, Apache is much more flexible, being able to choose almost any hero depending on the strategy.
Additional Tips[]
- As of update 12.0, the mini-helicopters can no longer inherit Alchemist or Overclock buffs of any form, including from Permanent Brew or Ultraboost.
- The main helicopter is not much stronger than an x-x-2 helicopter in terms of damage, and as such the mini-helis form the majority of the tower's total damage output.
- Both the darts and the missiles cannot pop DDTs alone. As such, the tower should be supported with a Monkey Intelligence Bureau if it is the main damage tower.
- It is much more valuable in the long-run to provide the Comanche Commander external camo detection and upgrade the Comanche Commander to 2-0-5 than it is to purchase simply 0-2-5, as the faster moving from Bigger Jets is not nearly as useful as the extra 2 darts fired by the mini-helicopters granted by Quad Darts.
- Setting the parent helicopter to any targeting system will not affect the mini-helicopters; they will always be on Pursuit targeting, even if the upgrade is not purchased.
- Avoid using Comanche Commander on multi-lane maps, as its DPS suffers when the mini-Comanche's pursuit targeting may cause it to prioritize lesser dangers.
Version History[]
Balance Changes[]
While functionally has not been nerfed in history, Comanche Commander was indirectly nerfed by a series of bug fixes. In early versions of the game, Comanche Commander was considered overpowered by players until Version 12.0 because of various exploitable bugs when interacting with Alchemists. Later on, Comanche Commander received a few minor quality-of-life buffs to make it more useful, alongside large buffs that focus on the base damage of the Comanche and its mini-Comanches.
- 5.0
- Comanche Commander's mini-helicopters will no longer gain the same bonus stat (attack speed, damage, range, etc.) multiple times from Alchemists (?). Other buffs still stacked.
- 6.0
- Comanche Commander's viability, when used conventionally, is greatly reduced by the Alchemist nerf. However, an exploit exists where moving the main Heli such that it cannot attack gives the mini-helicopters 100% uptime on Alchemist buffs, both Berserker Brew and Acidic Mixture Dip.
- 8.0
- Comanche Commander's mini-helicopters will now (correctly) deduct Alchemist potions usages. However, the same exploit still allows Acidic Mixture Dip to have 100% uptime on the mini-helicopters, maintaining some of the tower's viability.
- 10.0
- Comanche Commander's mini-helicopters will now correctly deduct Acidic Mixture Dip as well.
- 12.0
- Comanche Commander's mini-comanches are no longer affected by Alchemist buffs or newly introduced Overclock.
- They also no longer gain the same bonus stat (attack speed, damage, range, etc.) multiple times from non-Alchemist sources such as Pat's Rallying Roar, Call To Arms or Jungle Drums.
- Comanche Commander's mini-comanches do not gain camo detection whenever paired with an x2x village when placed in a certain order.
- 14.0
- Comanche Commander's mini-comanches now always gain camo detection whenever paired with an x2x village.
- 18.0
- 0-2-5 Comanche Defense will also apply increased flight speed to spawned Comanche (carried over from 0-2-4).
- x-x-5 Mini Comanche will load in under the main Commander when loading a save instead of at the edge of the screen.
- 28.0
“ | [...] MOAB Shove has had a missile attack similar to xx4's mini comanches added to provide this path something extra for when the mini comanche are not active. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to MOAB Shove and Comanche Defense |
- Comanche Commander main helicopter gains a 'mini heli missile' attack with pierce 30 and damage 3, and +2 damage to Ceramics and above. Strangely not affected by +1 damage that Comanche Commander usually receives.
- 30.0
“ | Comanche Defense mostly suffered during downtime and so the base Heli at T4 has had some general improvements made to power, but the mini helis have also gained a pierce increase to provide the darts with some improved crowd control | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Comanche Defense |
- Comanche Commander main heli missile attack cooldown decreased 3s -> 1s
- Comanche Commander main heli dart damage increased 2 -> 3
- Comanche Commander mini heli pierce increased 3 -> 4
- 33.0
“ | [...] Downdraft has more general use throughout the game and scales better than the more expensive MOAB Shove upgrade though they both see use, so the price of these upgrades has been swapped around. Faster Darts xx1 upgrade will now increase the attack distance of Heli Dart attacks in order to assist with cluttering issues where large numbers of Helis will push each other away from nearby targets. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Path 3 balance |
- Comanche Commander now increases both main helicopter and mini helicopter range of its dart attacks by +30%
- 35.0
“ | ComCom is both lacking in pierce damage, and favors the 105 crosspath more than we’d like. This goal for this change is to improve the overall single target power for the missile AoE without such a high pierce number, with only a smaller damage buff for the main darts so existing pierce benefits that can be applied for the main attack remain valuable | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Comanche Commander |
- Comanche Commander missile pierce reduced from 100 → 80
- Comanche Commander dart damage 3 → 4
- Comanche Commander missile damage 3 → 7
- Comanche Commander missile MOAB-class damage bonus +2 → +5
- Comanche Commander mini's missile damage 2 → 5
- Comanche Commander mini's missile MOAB-class damage bonus +2 → +5
- 37.0
“ | [...] Pushing some higher values on the last Comanche Commander changes as the missile attack is effectively such a small portion of the tower’s total damage late game. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Comanche Commander's mini Comanches now follow the target priority on Main Comanche instead of always Pursuit
- Comanche Commander main missile damage increased 7 → 15
- Comanche Commander main missile MOAB-class damage bonus increased +5 → +8
- Comanche Commander mini's missile damage increased 5 → 15
- Comanche Commander mini's missile MOAB-class damage bonus increased +5 → +8

“ | While the state of Comanche Defense has come a good way, xx5 still feels too expensive for what it offers. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
- Comanche Commander price reduced ($35,000 → $32,000)

Trivia[]
- There was a bug where the mini-helicopters cannot detect Camo by a Radar Scanner unless one sells and rebuys the Radar Scanner again.
- During the Version 6.0 Alchemist nerfs, Comanche Commander used to be remained unaffected by the nerf if the Comanche Commander main helicopter was locked in place in a corner away from the track.
- Contrary to popular belief, the "upgraded weapons" initially only gave extra damage to darts but not missiles. This is no longer the case since Version 35.0, as all missiles gain a significant damage bonus with the Comanche Commander upgrade.
