Increases pierce, freezes an extra layer and freeze lasts longer.
~ In-game description

Deep Freeze is the second upgrade of Path 2 for the Ice Monkey in Bloons TD 6. Deep Freeze can now freeze up to 2 layers instead of 1, as well as increasing freeze duration from 1.75s to 2.2s and increases pierce by +5. It does not increase the damage of each freeze blast, rather the freeze effect can penetrate up to 2 bloon layers. In other words, popping a bloon affected by Deep Freeze can carry over the frozen status for up to one descendent of that bloon. Note that freezing is applied after damage. Unless Tier 3 or above, Ceramics are frozen for 50% duration, only lasting up to 1.1s.

This upgrade costs $380 on Easy, $450 on Medium, $485 on Hard, and $540 on Impoppable.

Description[]

Overview[]

Placeholder other

Deep Freeze

An Ice Monkey with Enhanced Freeze gains a pair of red beanie worn above his existing earmuffs. The beanie has a white fluffy pompom at the top of it, although crosspathing with Icicles changes the shape of it from spherical to the style of a horsehair plume (specifically the plume in the style of a Roman helmet), due to that upgrade's cranial icicles.

Deep Freeze increases freeze penetration, penetrating another layer, and increases freeze duration to 2.2s.

Targeting Priorities[]

Deep Freeze produces freezing blasts in a zone-like style. Technically, the Ice Monkey is locked on the Close targeting priority. However, for simplicity reasons, this monkey has no targeting priorities.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Besides the extra pierce, which is always favorable on higher-tier Ice Monkeys for handling dense amounts of bloons, Deep Freeze is limited in its practical role, as most of the time when this upgrade is needed is when there are other attacks that would naturally defrost the ice too soon. Deep Freeze can be particularly favorable when paired with Mortar Monkeys and Bomb Shooters, especially Mortar's Burny Stuff. The extra freeze duration added allows the freezing to last longer than its attacks, which is generally favorable to keep more total bloons frozen. In combination with Re-Freeze crosspath, it can now permafreeze Super Ceramics regardless of having speed bonuses (e.g. Jungle Drums) or not, as well as slightly edge its efficiency in pre-Freeplay rounds. Because freezing is improved to last longer and penetrate more layers, Deep Freeze becomes very useful for stalling in the early-game and late-game. The extra pierce also helps hit more bloons, amplified especially for Cryo Cannon and above.

Tips[]

  • 0-2-2 Ice Monkeys (Deep Freeze + Refreeze) nearby each other can be used to continuously pop down masses of bloons. However, its previous Enhanced Freeze upgrade is usually sufficient for this purpose unless when paired with other towers, although Deep Freeze now essentially guarantees that any refrozen Super Ceramics are permafrozen.
  • Pair this with an explosive tower such as Mortar Monkey or Bomb Shooter to make the most of this upgrade.
  • Unless there are other non-Ice towers around, the freeze penetration granted by Deep Freeze is useless.
  • There appears to be more value with adding Deep Freeze to Ice Shards, as it apparently allows shard generation to pass onto bloon offspring too.

Version History[]

Balance Changes[]

An indirect buff to Deep Freeze by nerfing Enhanced Freeze, to make 0-2-2 become the old 0-1-2. Deep Freeze was also buffed in order to nerf the base Ice, and also nerfing the cost of Deep Freeze to account for the reworks.

32.0
Ice monkey Enhanced Freeze is too good at low tiers, allowing full stunlock of ceramics for very cheap, as the fire rate increase alone of this Enhanced Freeze is a powerful addition most of the increased freeze duration has been moved up as it makes more sense to have duration with the currently less desirable T2 Deep Freeze. [...]
~ Ninja Kiwi, referring to Enhanced Freeze
  • Change Indirect buff to Deep Freeze, retaining 2.2s freeze duration.
  • BUFF[undocumented bug] Deep Freeze can continue freeze bloons even without Re-Freeze upgrade
32.3
  • NERF [Bug fix] Deep Freeze no longer refreezes Bloons
33.0 (check if not 32.0?)
  • Change Description changed from "Freezes through 2 layers of Bloon." to "Freezes an extra layer and freeze lasts longer."
34.0
Ice Monkey base pierce is too high, very easily countering large numbers of strong Bloons early, mid or late in the game for small investment, leading to very low tiers of ice monkey (below t3) being highly effective spam options over upgrading your ice. We are reworking some of this base pierce to require crosspath investment and buffing the damage Ice 3xx Ice Shards to compensate for some of its reduced pierce.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Deep Freeze now increases pierce by +10
    • NERF Due to base Ice pierce nerfs by -10, all Ice Monkeys now require Deep Freeze to regain old pierce amounts.
    • Change Description changed from "Freezes an extra layer and freezes even longer." to "Increases pierce, freezes an extra layer and freeze lasts longer."
  • NERF Deep Freeze cost increased ($350 → $450)
37.0
  • NERF Tier 2 and below Ice Monkeys only apply 50% freeze effect to Ceramics (x-2-x: 2.2s → 1.1s)
39.0
We’re happier with more recent freeze changes succeeding in some of the intentions of older nerfs, given the base tower value in races being hit far more than intended we’re going back over the pierce for Ice Monkey base & middle crosspath. [...]
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Deep Freeze pierce increased (30 → 40)
  • NERF Deep Freeze bonus pierce decreased (+10 → +5)
    • Effectively a buff, as total x-2-x pierce increases from 40 to 45.

Trivia[]

  • Path 2 upgrade portraits all have clothing that humans would need to combat the cold, which is ironic for the Ice Monkey who is all about the cold.
  • In Version 32.0, despite the rework in Version 32.0 that nerfed Enhanced Freeze, the description of Deep Freeze remained unchanged. This was since changed in a later update, probably Version 33.0.
