Throws a single dart at nearby bloons. Short range and low pierce but cheap.
~ In-game description

The Dart Monkey is a Primary-class tower that was released in the initial release of Bloons TD Battles 2. It is the Battles counterpart to its Bloons TD 6 counterpart (refer on this page). It is unlocked when first starting the game, alongside Tack Shooter, Bomb Shooter, and Quincy. It is cheap, but has low pierce and an unremarkable attack speed.

Dart Monkey attacks at a moderate speed, throwing a dart every 0.95s. Darts deal 1 damage and hit up to 2 bloons per dart. It has a moderately low range of 32.

Although the Dart Monkey specializes in early-game power, its upgrades offer a degree of outstanding niche popping power. It can also be upgraded into a catapult operator that hurls spiked balls (Spike-o-pult, Juggernaut, Ultra-Juggernaut), remain as a Dart Monkey by throwing triple the darts and rallying up a fan club with allied Dart Monkeys (Triple Shot, Super Monkey Fan Club, Plasma Monkey Fan Club), or swap out darts for a bolt-shooting crossbow (Crossbow, Sharp Shooter, Crossbow Master).

The base price for Dart Monkey is $150. It is unlocked by default, unlocking all upgrades up to Tier 4, plus another Monkey Money1,500 (or $2.99 USD) to unlock all its Tier 5 upgrades.

Description[]

The Dart Monkey in Bloons TD Battles 2 is similar in appearance and upgrade progression to its Bloons TD 6 counterpart. However, all Dart Monkeys now have visible mouths in-game. Overall, it looks not too different compared to its BTD5 counterpart outside of having the general BTD6 Generation art style. There are minor differences to the Dart Monkey's visual appearance, however.

The Dart Monkey is a non-clothed monkey with a tuft of hair for its hairstyle. As with all monkeys in BTD6, it has big circular eyes, thick brown eyebrows, and dark fur around most of its head except its face. Its fur is brown and its skin is a slightly lighter tone of brown. Its belly is oval-shaped with two angular ovals above, colored the same as its skin. Its belly also features a small belly button. It carries a dart on its right hand.

Many changes have occurred for the Dart Monkey, the most significant of which is that the base 0-0-0 tower can now pop two bloons per shot instead of one, and both the Sharp Shots and Razor Sharp Shots upgrades have been moved to the Spike-O-Pult path. Another significant change is that Dart Monkey now has access to new upgrades that increase attack speed permanently, a first for the Dart Monkey. In addition to this, there is an entirely new set of higher-tier upgrades dedicated to crossbows.

Path 1 is themed around increasing the Dart Monkey's pierce. It starts with increased pierce for darts, then converts the Dart Monkey into a Spike-O-Pult, which then upgrades into a Juggernaut that can pop Lead Bloons and finally, the Ultra-Juggernaut for immense grouped Bloon destruction.

Path 2 is about speed and projectile count. The first two upgrades are pure attack speed increases, something not yet given to the Dart Monkey in the Bloons TD series before. The third upgrade is Triple Shot, allowing it to shoot three darts per shot instead of one. The final two upgrades provide abilities to turn many nearby Dart Monkeys into Super Monkeys for a short time.

Path 3 focuses on more range and damage, with the second upgrade, Enhanced Eyesight, granting camo detection. Most of the upgrades provide extra range to the Dart Monkey, but Tier 3 gives the Dart Monkey a crossbow and extra damage, while Tier 4 provides even more damage and attack speed on top, including bolt ricocheting once and occasional critical hits. The final upgrade, Crossbow Master, gives the Dart Monkey significantly more attack speed, damage, range and pierce. It can also pop any bloon type.

Dart Monkey is a Primary Monkey.

Target Priorities[]

The base Dart Monkey uses the standard target priorities: First, Last, Close, Strong. All its attacks are dependent on its given target priority.

  • First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
  • Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
  • Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
  • Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.

Summary[]

The Dart Monkey is a very cheap unit that possesses many upgrades that help assist the early-game. Having the cheapest base cost and extremely cheap Tier 3 upgrades, Dart Monkeys excel greatly in the early-game. It has a number of quite powerful Tier 4 upgrades that fulfill particular niches into the mid-game. The Dart Monkey has a limited late-game potential, however, its Plasma Monkey Fan Club upgrade does bolster DPS against some late-game rushes.

In terms of use cases for each of its upgrades in tower loadouts, the Dart Monkey is most prized for its early-game prowess. Its Tier 3 upgrades provide much of the Dart Monkey's strong early-game popping power, with later tiers of upgrades expanding upon its niche supporting damage. Fitting with the description of the Dart Monkey, the Dart Monkey generally excels in the early-game. However, its Tier 4 and 5 upgrades expand upon the strengths of the Dart Monkeys to co-ordinate with assisting existing defenses.

Tips[]

  • Tier 2 and below upgrades are fairly decent popping power for cheap in the transition to Tier 3 upgrades. The base tower is extremely cheap for a 2-pierce moderate-speed popper.
  • Each of its Tier 3 upgrades help the Dart Monkey excel during early stages of the game.
    • Spike-o-pult is best used along straight lines to fulfill its maximum pierce.
    • Triple Shot is a very cheap T3 that is best targeted into a consistent position to fulfill overall damage to small groups of bloons.
    • Crossbow is a great option along straight line formations to chip down the strength of R5-6 rushes such as Spaced Whites and Spaced Blacks.
  • Each of its Tier 4 upgrades provide a strong point for the mid-game. Many of its strengths are expansions upon their Tier 3 upgrades, although Super Monkey Fan Club is a large step-up from Triple Shot.
    • Juggernaut's high group-popping power makes it a great expansion upon Spike-o-pult's grouped damage.
    • Super Monkey Fan Club's co-ordinated rapid DPS allows for quick MOAB-class damage and cleanup.
    • Sharp Shooter's single-target prowesses help them chip away at stronger bloons such as R17-19 MOAB rushes. It is most helpful in Sentai Churchill loadouts, which are often weak to R17-19 MOAB rushes.
  • The Tier 5 upgrades each provide a mid-to-late-game advantage in different ways. In general, only Dart Monkey's Plasma Monkey Fan Club remains relevant going into deep lategame.
  • Dart Monkey excels in the early-game, and its strongest point for early-game is its cheap cost, versatility on many map formats, and capability to reliably anti-stall rounds for low cost.
  • 520 Ultra Juggernaut can destroy tight leads and ceramic bloons with ease.
  • Plasma Monkey Fan club with the help of Homeland defence or Super Brittle can shred BADs easily.
  • Placing multiple 024 Sharp shooter can take down fortified MOABs and BFBs effectively.

Version History[]

Balance Changes[]

Compared to its Battles 1 counterpart, the Dart Monkey is far worse. The biggest changes going into Battles 2 was the introduction of DDTs, BADs, and the new crosspathing system. The three previously most strongest upgrades, Juggernaut, Triple Shot, and especially Super Monkey Fan Club, all no longer fare well against the highest-threatening Blimps in the game. Triple Shot is no longer an effective starting upgrade, making Dart users far more reliant on maps that have long, straight lines. Juggernaut, while dealing more damage, will often now get peirce capped against layered mid-game rushes, making it less reliable. The crosspathing system also nerfed Juggernaut as you can no longer have increased attack speed and Camo Bloon detection at the same time, making for a difficult choice between the two. This reliance on straight lined maps have drastically hurt Dart’s viability, with most players opting for other cheap early game options like Boomerang and Tack Shooter.

The only popular Dart loadouts include Dart-Sniper-Farm on specifically Garden, and Dart-Ice-Village, which has fallen out of favor early on due to being too weak until lategame. As for Hero choice, Captain Churchill and Sentai Churchill are most commonly used due to Dart being able to pivot into him on round 2 for an early Churchill, in addition to also working well on straight lines.

1.10.3
  • BUFF x2x Very Quick Shots: $190 -> $150.
  • BUFF x3x Triple Shot: $325 -> $300.
  • BUFF x4x Super Monkey Fan Club: Each ability can now independently transform up to 10 darts monkeys (no longer limited to 10 maximum conversions when activating multiple abilities.)
This ability change was recently implemented in BTD6, and we feel that it is a good buff in this game too. It gives dart a little buff by giving it the ability to deal more total damage in the late game, without impacting its mid game as much, where it is already a decent ability. We have also made small improvements to Triple Shot, since this upgrade gets neglected in favor of the other dart paths.

2.0
  • NERF xx5 Crossbow Master damage 11 → 9.
  • BUFF xx5 Crossbow Master attack cooldown 0.16s → 0.13s.
The previous damage increase meant the Crossbow Master now performs poorly against ceramic bloons. This wasn’t our intention so we are reverting this change and buffing its attack speed instead.
~ Ninja Kiwi
2.0.4
  • BUFF 3xx Spike-o-pult: Range increase 0% → 15%.
  • NERF 4xx Juggernaut: Range increase 15% → 0%.
The intention of this change is to make Spike-o-pult a little bit more reliable without the range crosspaths since their aiming can be pretty inconsistent without it. The range crosspaths provide camo detection as well so it didn’t feel like this change is taking away too much from that crosspath. Juggernaut remains unchanged as we did not think that it needed changing as well.
~ Ninja Kiwi
2.2
  • BUFF 3xx Spike-o-pult now allows re-hitting targets after bouncing
  • BUFF 4xx Juggernaut now allows re-hitting targets after bouncing
  • BUFF 5xx Ultra-Juggernaut now allows re-hitting targets after bouncing
Allowing juggernaut projectiles to re-hit bloons after bouncing is a core mechanism of the tower in BTD6, so we are adding it to Battles 2 as well. We are also extending this to the Spike-o-pult like btd6 recently did, as Dart Monkey could definitely do with this small improvement.
~ Ninja Kiwi
3.1
  • BUFF 5xx Ultra-Juggernaut: main ball deals 4 → 5 damage and +5 → +6 damage to fortified bloons
  • BUFF xx4 Sharp Shooter / xx5 Crossbow Master: the first attack will now always be a Crit Shot
  • BUFF 2xx Razor Sharp Shots: $250 → $150
  • NERF 3xx Spike-o-pult: $300 → $400
Spike-o-pult feels like it’s in a decent spot, however the other low tier Dart Monkey upgrades aren’t at the same level. So we have made a small adjustment to 2xx while leaving 3xx’s total cost unchanged, which will help the other upgrade paths such as 230 more than anything. Additionally, we have changed xx4/5 so that when you first purchase the upgrade, the first attack will be a Crit Shot. This gives it a bit more potential to be effective in situations when you need to quickly build up defense to defend a speedy rush and instantly need the extra damage. We also felt that Ultra-Juggernaut could do with a little buff as it is on the weaker side for a tier 5 upgrade.
~ Ninja Kiwi
3.2
  • BUFF Base: $200 → $150
  • BUFF x2x Very Quick Shots: $150 → $100
  • NERF 3xx Spike-o-pult: $400 → $450
  • BUFF xx3 Crossbow: $475 → $450
We’ve made a few small price cuts to Dart Monkey’s early upgrades so that the tower can obtain greater relevance in the meta as a dominant early game tower.
~ Ninja Kiwi
3.3
  • BUFF Super Monkey Fan Club main attack damage increased from 1 to 3, or 2 to 4 damage when transformed by Plasma Monkey Fan Club
  • BUFF Plasma Monkey Fan Club main attack damage increased from 1 to 6, or 2 to 7 damage when transformed by Plasma Monkey Fan Club
We wanted to very slightly improve Dart Monkey’s late game potential by giving x4x and x5x additional base damage, so that these upgrades no longer only provide an ability. This additional damage also applies when the tower is converted into a super monkey from an x4x or x5x ability.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.0.2
  • NERF Super Monkey Fan Club: $8,000 → $9,000 and ability duration 15s → 12s
  • NERF Plasma Monkey Fan Club: Ability duration 15s → 12s
Dart has received a lot of buffs over the updates and has now gained recognition for being dominant tower in all stages of the game. We have decided to weaken its abilities so that it can keep its early game strength while being a bit easier to rush in the mid/late game.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.3
  • BUFF Crossbow: pierce 6 → 8
  • BUFF Sharpshooter: bolts now ricochet once after the first hit
  • BUFF Crossbow Master: Crit damage 50 → 100
The crossbow is the least used of the Dart Monkey’s upgrade paths. The Juggernaut and Super Monkey Fan Club both have their niche with high pierce group popping and concentrated single target damage respectively. We are buffing the Crossbow Monkey to give it a place somewhere between the two with solid pierce and damage and some slight seeking to ensure it makes the most out of its pierce.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.3.1 OTA Update 1
  • NERF Crossbow: $450 → $600
  • NERF Crossbow: base pierce 8 → 7
The Dart Monkey buffs in the previous had a bigger impact on the very early game than we anticipated, so we are reducing the pierce slightly and increasing the cost to slow down its usage early on, while still keeping the buffs to higher tiers.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.5
  • NERF Razor Sharp Shots: $150 → $250
  • BUFF Juggernaut: $1,800 → $1,700
  • NERF Triple Shot: $300 → $400
We are increasing the cost of the Triple Darts upgrade and moving some of the top path’s cost into the lower upgrades to make dart monkey hoards more expensive.
~ Ninja Kiwi

Trivia[]

  • The Dart Monkey is the cheapest tower in the game. In addition, all of its Tier 3 upgrades alone are the cheapest of their tier, with its cheapest upgrade even lower than the cost of Engineer's Double Gun.
