“ | Shoots a single dart that pops a single bloon. A good, cheap tower suitable for the early rounds. | ” |
~ Flash series description |
The Dart Monkey is a tower in Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City. It retains its name and role from the Bloons TD 4 and Classic game generations, with significant additions.
The Dart Monkey attacks by throwing darts at the Bloons, with limited range and middling attack speed. Without upgrades, each dart can only pop one Bloon at a time, and it cannot pop Frozen Bloons, Lead Bloons, Camo Bloons, or DDTs. Because of its low cost and limited damage output, its primary role is as an early-game attacking tower, with limited use later on.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Dart Monkey is a standard-looking monkey with dark eyes, brown fur, and exposed tan skin on its face, ears, chest, hands, and feet. It has two small tufts of hair on the back of its head. It wields darts in its right hand, which it throws at Bloons to attack.
If upgraded to either Long Range Darts or Sharp Shots, it wears a green headband. If upgraded to either Enhanced Eyesight or Razor Sharp Shots, it wears a red headband. If upgraded to Spike-O-Pult, it loses its headband and darts, replacing its weapon with a wooden catapult that launches large spiked balls. If upgraded to Juggernaut, the catapult launches much larger spiked balls. If upgraded to Triple Darts instead, it dons a quiver of darts and a black headband with a red marking in the middle. If upgraded to Super Monkey Fan Club, it dons a Super Monkey-esque outfit, which it covers with a green cloak. While transformed by the Super Monkey Fan Club's ability, it looks identical to an unupgraded Super Monkey.

Targeting Priorities[]
The base Dart Monkey uses the standard Targeting Priorities: First, Last, Close, Strong. All its attacks are dependent on its given target priority.
- First: Targets the first Bloon visible within its range.
- Last: Targets the last Bloon visible within its range.
- Close: Targets the closest Bloon visible within its range.
- Strong: Targets the strongest Bloon visible within its range.
Upgrades[]
Path 1[]
Long Range Darts COST: $75 / $90 / $95 / $110 UNLOCK: 30 XP
Description: Makes the dart monkey shoot further than normal.
Effect: Gains +25 range. In the Mobile series, darts also gain +25 maximum travel distance. |
Enhanced Eyesight COST: $100 / $120 / $130 / $145 UNLOCK: 460 XP
Description: Further increases attack range and allows Dart Monkey to see Camo Bloons.
Effect: Gains +25 range and grants Camo Detection. In the Mobile series, darts also gain +25 maximum travel distance. |
Spike-O-Pult COST: $425 / $500 / $540 / $600 UNLOCK: 1,890 XP
Description: Converts the Dart Monkey into a Spike-O-Pult, a powerful tower that hurls a large spiked ball instead of darts. Good range, but slower attack speed. Each ball can pop 18 bloons.
Effect: Launches spiked balls that pop up to 18 Bloons (40 Bloons in BTDB Mobile). Projectiles can travel much further but at a much lower velocity. Has a significantly slower reload speed (1.54s instead of 0.9s). |
Juggernaut COST: $1,275 / $1,500 / $1,620 / $1,800 UNLOCK: 9,330 XP
Description: Hurls a giant unstoppable killer spiked ball that can pop lead bloons and excels at crushing ceramic bloons.
Effect: Gains +25 range. Launches giant spiked balls that can pop up to 100 Bloons, can pop Lead Bloons and Frozen Bloons, and deals +4 damage to Ceramic Bloons. Projectiles travel faster, but are still significantly slower than darts. Has a slightly faster reload speed (1.4s instead of 1.54s). |
Path 2[]
Sharp Shots COST: $120 / $140 / $150 / $170 UNLOCK: 75 XP
Description: Can pop 1 extra bloon per shot.
Effect: Gains +1 pierce, for a total of 2 pierce by default. |
Razor Sharp Shots COST: $145 / $170 / $185 / $205 UNLOCK: 580 XP
Description: Can pop 2 extra bloons per shot.
Effect: Gains +2 pierce, for a total of 4 pierce by default. |
Triple Darts COST: $280 / $330 / $355 / $395 UNLOCK: 3,250 XP
Description: Throws 3 darts at a time instead of 1.
Effect: Throws three darts per shot. In the Flash series, the darts have a spread of 0.43 radians (approx. 24.6°). In the Mobile series, the darts have a spread of 60°, centered 15° anticlockwise from the base Dart Monkey's throwing angle. |
Super Monkey Fan Club COST: $6,800 / $8,000 / $8,640 / $9,600 UNLOCK: 14,535 XP
Description: Super Monkey Fan Club Ability: Converts up to 10 nearby dart monkeys into Super Monkeys for 15 seconds.
Effect: Transforms itself and up to 9 other Dart Monkeys on the screen (prioritizing the Dart Monkeys closest to it) into Super Monkeys for 15 seconds. While transformed, Dart Monkeys gain +40 range and throw darts with a cooldown of 0.05s (slightly faster than the Super Monkey's 0.058s). In the Flash version, instead increases attack speed by 20x, effectively reducing its cooldown to 0.045s. |
General differences between the Flash series and Mobile series[]
Long Range Darts and Enhanced Eyesight also increase the maximum travel distance of the Dart Monkey's darts.
Triple Darts throws darts with a wider spread and at angles further towards the left of the tower.
- Super Monkey Fan Club:
Has a longer attack cooldown during the transformation (0.045s → 0.05s).
Increases the maximum travel distance and reduces the velocity of transformed Dart Monkey's darts to match the Super Monkey's darts.
Does not stack range boosts on a single Dart Monkey if used multiple times concurrently. Using it on a Dart Monkey that is already transformed simply resets the duration of the transformation.
Can transform Spike-O-Pults and Juggernauts (without using glitches). While transformed, they will launch spiked balls at their usual rate of fire in addition to throwing darts at high speeds. (This does not apply to the Mobile version of Bloons TD Battles as of version 3.2.)
In Bloons TD 5[]
The Dart Monkey is unlocked at the start of the game. Its tier 4 upgrades are unlocked at Rank 19.
It costs $170 on Easy, $200 on Medium, $215 on Hard, and $240 on Impoppable.

Version History (Bloons TD Battles Mobile)[]
The Dart Monkey is one of the most used towers in the game due to its low cost and versatility. It has been nerfed significantly since its initial release (albeit not as severely as the Bloonchipper), but it continues to be a popular tower among players and is used in a wide variety of loadouts (most often with the Banana Farm).
Popular loadouts include Dart-Farm-Ace (one of the most popular loadouts as of Version 6.17), Dart-Farm-Bomb, Dart-Farm-Ice, and Dart-Farm-Wizard. Dart-Farm-Chipper used to be arguably the most popular loadout until the nerfs to Super Wide Funnel and Supa-Vac in Version 4.1 hampered its late-game potential, though it still sees occasional play.
- Initial Release
Juggernaut cannot pop Frozen Bloons.
- 3.1
Triple Darts price increased from $330 → $380.
- 3.2
Super Monkey Fan Club no longer affects Spike-O-Pults or Juggernauts.
Juggernaut price increased from $1500 → $1750.
- 3.4
Juggernaut can now pop Frozen Bloons.
- 3.9
Triple Darts price increased from $380 → $400.
- 4.1
“ | The Dart Monkey is one of the most popular towers in the game with extremely high use-rates, but we think it has a little too much value for the low cost - especially in the early game. This change should help with this and encourage players to consider other options. | ” |
~ "BTD Battles Update 4.1 - Big Balance Changes Incoming!" |
Triple Darts price increased from $400 → $500.
Enhanced Eyesight price increased from $120 → $160.
Juggernaut price increased from $1750 → $1900.
Super Monkey Fan Club ability duration reduced from 15s → 11s.
- 4.3
“ | At the same price as Triple Darts, the Spike-O-Pult was simply a much less powerful upgrade than its opposite number. We've increased its pierce by over 100% which should bring the two third tiers more on par with each other. The slight reduction in price to Triple Darts will hopefully make the decision on which upgrade path to take that little bit tougher! | ” |
~ "BTD Battles 4.3 Update Balance Changes" |
Triple Darts price reduced from $500 → $475.
Spike-O-Pult pierce increased from 18 → 40.
In Bloons Monkey City[]
The Dart Monkey is unlocked by building the Dart Monkey Hall, two of which are provided at the start of the game. Each Dart Monkey Hall increases the population of Dart Monkeys by 1, allowing for more Dart Monkeys to be used at a time while attacking a tile.
The Dart Monkey's upgrades can be researched by building the Monkey Academy. Its tier 4 upgrades, Juggernaut and Super Monkey Fan Club, require the Oversize Projectile Workshop and Super Monkey Fan Clubhouse to be built, respectively, in order to be researched.
It is not favored on any terrain, but it is restricted on Hills Terrain and Snow Terrain.
It costs $200 normally, or $215 on Hardcore Mode.

Flash series[]

"Super Juggernaut" glitch demonstrated in Bloons TD 5
- If a Dart Monkey is upgraded to Spike-o-pult or Juggernaut while it is transformed by the Super Monkey Fan Club ability, the effects of the transformation are still applied, causing it to launch its spiked balls with the transformation's increased range and rate of fire until it wears off. This is often referred to as the "Super Catapult" or "Hypersonic Catapult" glitch by players, or the "Super Juggernaut" or "Hypersonic Juggernaut" glitch when referring to its use with Juggernaut specifically.
Mobile series[]
- Juggernaut registers each Bloon popped twice in its pop count.
- Juggernaut's increased damage to Ceramic Bloons also applies to MOAB-Class Bloons if it is under the influence of an MIB.
Quotes[]
“ | Shoots a single dart that pops a single bloon. | ” |

Trivia[]
- An image of a Dart Monkey appears on the loading screen of the Flash version of Bloons TD 5.
- During limited-time Halloween events in the Flash version of Bloons TD 5, the Dart Monkey's darts were reskinned to look like sharpened bones.
- In Bloons Monkey City, with the maximum number of Dart Monkey Halls, the Portable Dart Monkey, and the Dart Monkey's Monkey Knowledge at Rank 13+, it is possible to have up to 46 Dart Monkeys at a time, the most of any Monkey outside of Special Missions.
- In the Mobile version, it is possible to have up to 47 Dart Monkeys at a time using a Bonus Monkey.
- The Dart Monkey's description in the "My Monkeys" menu in Bloons Monkey City erroneously mentions a nonexistent upgrade named "Very Long Range".
References[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 In the Flash version, this increases the pierce of the Dart Monkey's projectiles by a flat amount (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 respectively). In the Mobile version, it instead increases the chance of the Dart Monkey's projectiles having double pierce. In both versions, this stacks additively with the Blessed Dart.
