Rules for Boss Bloon Event, including the text for Bloonarius

Boss Bloon Events are events in Bloons TD 6 where the player fights off a Boss Bloon while also facing rounds of other bloons. The main Boss Bloon Event can be accessed via the Boss Bloon Event button in the main menu. Boss Bloon Events were first introduced in Version 27.0, starting with Bloonarius 'the Inflator'. Further Boss Bloons were added in later updates:

As Bosses were added to the game, each new boss was tacked on to the end of the rotation.

Playing against Boss Bloons in multiplayer via Co-Op Mode has been added in Version 28.0. This option is available whenever a Boss Bloon Event is active. In addition, Ranked Bosses have also been added in Version 28.0, with similar gameplay to Race Events, except defeating the boss at all stages as fast as possible. A special variant of the Boss Bloon Event gamemode appears as the ruleset "Boss", exclusive to Contested Territory. This ruleset currently did not include Dreadbloon or Phayze until update 39.0. Alternatively, Boss Challenge offers a similar full-on experience with any available Boss Bloon with only standard gameplay available.

Starting with 33.0, game saves for Boss Events are locked to a single device. In addition, to encourage specific choices of Paragons, Paragons are now limited to 4 (3 prior to Version 33.3) per Boss Event, though this limit can change.

Battles[]

The main structure of Boss Bloon Events consists of defeating all 5 Tiers of the Boss in order to fully win. Beating all 140 Rounds is not required, only up to the fifth and final boss tier, with the minimum possible round being Round 120. Two variants of the boss exist, Normal and Elite. Elite is a harder version of Normal with significantly greater HP and much stronger Boss abilities, but nets greater rewards upon beating each tier. In order to challenge the Elite Boss, the normal boss must be beaten first.

When a boss is on screen, rounds will always be sent as if "Auto Start" was on, sending the next round as soon as the previous one finishes. Loading back into a game save will load the last completed round, but if the boss is active then the game will auto-continue regardless if "Auto Start" is on/off. Once the boss is no longer on screen, any bloons left over in the current round must be popped for the normal round conditions to continue upon subsequent rounds.

Once the boss arrives, the appropriate boss music will play, and the Health HUD for the Boss Bloon will be visible at the top of the screen. Rounds will still be sent normally, regardless of the Boss's status. Rounds where the boss appears will be modified. Once dead, the boss undergoes a defeat animation and the boss music stops. The game then continues as normal, returning back to ordinary Auto Start settings. If the boss dies on its Tier 5 stage, the game is over and the player receives a win screen after beating the current round.

Players can lose to the boss in three different ways: losing all lives to non-boss bloons of any type (including natural bloons and boss minions such as Bloonarius Minions or Dreadrock Bloons), leaking the boss with any amount of health, or failing to kill the boss within 20 rounds of its appearance no matter its tier or path progression.

While standard Continues remain (without extra cash), the player is also given the option of choosing a checkpoint. Using a checkpoint will restart the player back to the earliest checkpoint in groups of 20 rounds, starting from Round 20. Checkpoints cost more 100 every 20 rounds, starting from Round 20 (e.g. losing on Round 40 will cost 200, and losing on Round 60 costs 300), up to 600 at Rounds 120+. This option is only presented to players in Co-Op Mode if they directly lose to a boss, which means players cannot directly restart to a checkpoint after beating a boss tier. However, even in co-op, players can agree to leak lives to be presented with the option of a continue.

Of course, the player can also press Restart to revert back to the first round for zero cost. If the player loses while the boss is not on-screen (including rounds 1-39 and any grace periods before next boss tier spawns), the continue option will still be presented, although checkpoints remain an option. (prior to Version 40: Losing to a Boss by not killing it within 20 rounds causes Continues to be disabled and completely prevents the player from going back to the last checkpoint.)

Bosses each have a separate soundtrack, most of which are unique to a certain theme of boss.

  • "Primal One" plays during Bloonarius, Vortex and Dreadbloon's Boss Events.
  • "Onslaught" plays during Lych and Blastapopoulos's Boss Event.
  • "The Reality Warper", an edited version of Onslaught, plays during Phayze's Boss Event.

Events[]

To find a list of every Boss event and their custom rounds, view this article.

Assume each event starts at Saturday 8:00 pm NZST and ends at Thursday 3:00 pm NZST unless stated otherwise. From Week 14, the end date was Thursday 4:30 pm NZST to accommodate the added competitive leaderboards, but from Week 40, the end date was set at Thursday 3 pm NZST, or Thursday 2 pm NZST for entry to a Ranked Boss game save. Boss Bloon Events in the original Bloons TD 6 are not the same as those in Bloons TD 6 Console, which have their own separate Boss Bloon Events.

Also note that all Boss Bloon Events contain "Custom Rounds"; these are normally custom rounds that are accompanied with each type of Boss Bloon. Boss Bloon Events tagged with an asterisk contain additional custom rounds. If not specified otherwise, the maximum number of Paragons available is 4.

Boss Bloon Cycle[]

The current Boss Bloon rotation is as follows: Bloonarius → Lych → Vortex → Dreadbloon → Phayze → Blastapopulos → repeat to Bloonarius.

Each newly released Boss typically appears 4 consecutive times before the expected regular boss cycle resumes (with Phayze being the exception due to a bug on release). In addition, the map the Boss is fought on will change each week.

Co-Op Bosses[]

Co-op bosses behave similarly to regular bosses. There are multiple ways to play a Boss Event on co-op, either via the main Boss Event screen or through the "Play Social" button on the home screen. In co-op bosses, the process for obtaining higher-tier Paragons and optimal farming generally become far easier. This is balanced out by increasing boss HP depending on how many players are in the game. 2-player fights will have 20% more boss HP, 3-player fights will have 40% more, and 4-player fights will have 60% more. Co-op does NOT increase the speed of the boss. In addition, Co-op does not present the option to restart at a checkpoint if they do not lose lives intentionally.
Completing a co-op boss grants the same rewards as solo play, and playing the same event solo after already beating it in co-op will not grant the rewards twice. Completing a co-op event in Ranked mode will also place the player in a completely separate leaderboard depending on the number of players in the game, detailed below.

Ranked Bosses[]

Boss race main

Boss Race Rewards for the main race

Boss race mini

Boss Race Rewards for mini-race

In Ranked Bosses, players compete in a global leaderboard for the fastest time, least tiers, or least cash spent in the event. Everything about the event remains the same, except with Powers and Premiums (specifically Double Cash and Hero Booster) being disabled (most likely to avoid unfair use of Powers such as Tier 5 Insta-Monkeys or Cash Drops, as well as avoid pay-to-win conditions). For fastest time events, the time used for the leaderboard is the time that the boss is on-screen. For least tiers and least cash events, the tiers used and cash spent are calculated similarly to how they are in challenges.

Furthermore, a penalty timer is introduced which adds to a player's time in fastest time leaderboards and serves as a tie-breaker in Least Tiers and Least Cash leaderboards. While the Boss is not on screen, the penalty timer will start ticking 10 + round number * 0.25 seconds after the final Bloon in a round is sent and stops once the next round begins. During the penalty timer, all purely cash generation abilities stop cooling off until the penalty timer stops. If the player beats the round before this time limit, the timer does not begin.

The moment the final tier of the Boss is defeated, both timers stop counting and your final time, tiers, or cash is recorded. For timed events, the penalty is added to your boss timer. Co-op ranked leaderboards behave in the same way, where there is a different leaderboard for the number of participants in the co-op game. Large rewards are given to players who place well on the leaderboard.

Players are also entered into a "Mini Boss" leaderboard which is nearly identical to the Mini Race leaderboard. The player is automatically entered into a smaller leaderboard with only a max of 100 players. It has its own, smaller reward in addition to the main one.

Players can toggle on or off Ranked mode for Bosses in the bottom left of the main Boss Event screen. All players in a Co-Op match must have this option turned on in order to participate a Co-Op leaderboard, but it is possible for some players to quit partway through.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Farm super hard in order to save income for handling the boss. Always farm early as possible using the most optimal farming methods, particularly Benjamin, Geraldo, Banana Farms, or Merchantmen. Each boss may have different properties depending on type, but most anti-BAD strategies should be powerful against Boss Bloons. Keep an eye on any special properties of the boss, as this may alter the way that boss needs to be beaten.

Tips[]

  • Depending on the type of Boss Bloon, use different strategies for defeating them. Look at their underlying weaknesses. Strategies that work for BADs, with exception of instakills or health reducers, will likely work for Boss Bloons too.
    • Bloonarius is weak against high damage, and the tier 1 and 2 bloons spawned from it are weak against anti-ceramic defense like M.O.A.R. Glaives and Blade Maelstrom. With Geraldo, one can opt for multiple Blade Traps to avoid having to prep defense.
    • Lych only spawns MOAB-Class Bloons, so most defense that is great against Lych itself is also great for the Lych-Soul and resurrected blimps. If not confident, one can opt for a MOAB Shove for tier 1 and 2 Chained MOABs. Another alternative is intentionally stalling rounds to avoid more MOABs from spawning, and then being resurrected.
    • Vortex can be constantly pushed back to its spawn if enough damage can be dealt from a distance. Elite Defender, MOAB Eliminator, and Ray of Doom are fantastic options to do this in tier 1 elite for the first two, and up to tier 2 for the latter (with buffs).
    • The bulk of Dreadbloon's health comes from it's ceramic rock exterior. Thus, defense with ceramic bonuses such as Deadly Precision and Artillery Battery are more viable than typical of a boss. Towers where the bulk of their damage can ignore the Rock Bloons such as M.A.D are also great for staying focused on the boss. Another alternative is simply doing so much damage that rock bloons never get a chance to mess up targeting, with all towers set to First.
    • Phayze's innate, regenerating camo property can easily be bypassed by towers with innate camo detection. Towers that deal extra damage to Camo Bloons are especially effective at combatting it, particularly the Camo specialist Ascended Shadow. Its constant dashing around the track can also be countered (slightly) through use of one or more Support Chinooks.
    • Blastapopoulos
  • Using Benjamin or Geraldo to kickstart income flow makes them generally the best heroes for Boss Bloon Events.
  • Damage bonuses like Glue Strike, Embrittlement, and Cripple Moab, combined with fast, high projectile towers like Overdrive and Sun Avatars, can deal massive damage. Their combined damage output can rival paragons in the lategame.
  • If not confident, the best Powers to start with is a Cash Drop at the start. This is because it provides a kickstart in massive greed that goes a long way, since you can start out with a Greater Production Banana Farm with the extra cash. If even less confident, one can use a high tier Banana Farm Insta-Monkey or multiple cash drops. To assist this, use of Banana Farmer for income assistance is beneficial, and Tech Bot for automatic assistance with ability activations is worthwhile. Purely offense-based Powers such as Super Monkey Storm or Road Spikes will contribute very little, so it is better to avoid them.
  • Because bosses count for determining RBE on screen, and themselves pack with extremely high health, Avatar of Wrath is able to cap out its RBE damage bonus quickly. This makes Avatar of Wrath an excellent choice for earlier tier bosses of any type. That being said, its value does wear off in much higher boss tiers due to the 90,000 RBE cap for +30 damage.
  • A Vengeful True Sun God is not required for Boss Bloons. Players can simply pick out a True Sun God and compensate its weaker power with many towers spammed on the map, or simply build two to four Paragons.
    • This is especially helpful for players who do not have the Monkey Knowledge that would enable the VTSG, or if the necessary components for a VTSG are disabled.
  • Most Bosses will always begin on the very first path of a certain map in the condition that the first available path formation is Round 1. Test the map on Sandbox Mode and test a MOAB send on Round 1; the path where the MOAB goes is likely where the Boss may spawn from.
  • If desperate to use Powers, it is wise to invest in money-generating powers, especially Cash Drop on the first round possible.
    • However, powers such as Monkey Boost and Energizing Totem can still help, as they can boost crucial towers DPS beyond boosts provided by Engineers, Monkey Village, and Alchemists. Buffs from powers cannot be sapped by Lych.
    • Time Stop essentially acts as a second Monkey Boost except for your abilities. As of Version 27.0, Time Stops will also slow down BADs and Boss Bloons to the same reduced speed as Towers. Abilities and Paragons are also unaffected by the reduced speed which is one of the many reasons why Time Stop is a valuable Power to use here.
  • As seen on December 8th 2021, Boss fights can end earlier than normal, that way an update release such as 29.0 will not result in players who start a boss event late having a potential competitive advantage (or a competitive disadvantage).
    • Version 32.2 removed the Spike Storm 0-4-2 ability to benefit from start-of-round bonuses without ending the event early, thus putting players who updated at a disadvantage.

Paragon Tips[]

  • Certain Paragons may contain unique strengths that should be taken advantage of to deal optimal damage to the Boss at certain stages of the game. Some may be very cheap and only require simple buildups, while others are more expensive. Not all Paragons fit in all scenarios, so choose the Paragons that matter for the current Boss. And finally, note that there is normally a limit of 4 Paragons for all Boss Events, making choosing the right ones a key part of Boss strategy.
    • The Apex Plasma Master excels when bouncing against obstacles or the entrance, making it a very strong pick against Vortex. It struggles more against other bosses if it cannot bounce its projectiles off obstacles, since its DPS otherwise is not great. Therefore, it is recommended to place it with a lot of obstacles maps, such as Hedge, Cornfield (If the side corns aren't removed), Sulfur Springs or Encrypted.
    • The Glaive Dominus is a better cheap option against Lych or Bloonarius when there are not many obstacles. In addition, its explosive glaive attack ignores Vortex's shield, making it used for elite tier 2 quick kills. It also is very consistent at dealing with all rock bloons from all Dreadbloon tiers. The unique global Primary buff giving +11% attack speed makes co-operative Glaive Dominus + Primary Paragons a stronger synergy.
    • The Ascended Shadow is a very good single tower option to use, not only due to its high damage through its sticky bombs, but also its utility in the form of its global camo detection and permanent reduction of Bloon/MOAB speed and MOAB HP. Its bonus damage to Camo Bloons making it particularly effective against Phayze. With the global range of the Sticky Bomb, it is also excellent at dealing with Vortex from a far range.
    • The Navarch of the Seas is a highly useful Paragon. Its hooks remove the threat of spawned/revived MOAB-class Bloons including BADs (through its ability) and it overall deals massive damage to Bosses. Another useful feature of the Navarch is its additional income buff that stacks with Trade Empire. It is recommended to place near bends or craved to maximum the damage with the 6 Turret guns. It also buffs the Goliath Doomship and Nautic Siege Core, although it does not buff their ability.
    • The Master Builder can prep huge burst damage with its mega sentries. Detonating the mega sentries will be its largest source of damage and will also ignore Vortex's shields. It is recommended to continuously placing the new Mega Sentry Turrets next to the Boss bloons to get extra damage from the Paragon Sentries's explosion.
    • The Goliath Doomship is a very powerful lategame paragon that matches its high price. The carpet bomb ability can wipe out millions of elite boss health at higher degrees, and thus preparing it one or two rounds before the boss spawns is recommended to get the ability ready for the boss round.
    • The Magus Perfectus is best used as a powerful sustained DPS Paragon. It is effective against Bloonarius and Dreadbloon (if it's not immune to Magic). Compared to its high price, much of its true power come from micromanaging its fluctuating graveyard mana and timing its abilities carefully. It is also a recommended to place it where it can hit the boss most times for maximum damage while also setting on Strong (If the Boss Bloon is Dreadbloon, set the targeting to First instead) to get the most damage from Arcane Metamorphosis.
    • The Nautic Siege Core is a devastating and mid DPS Paragon. Compared the price of Cheaper Ascend Shadow. It is recommended to place it next to nearby Paragons to grant them ability cooldown buffs. The Nautic Siege Core's Final Strike ability can deal extremely high damage to Bosses at higher degrees; caution is advised given this ability will temporarily disable the Paragon entirely.

Trivia[]

  • Ninja Kiwi mentioned a conception of Boss Bloon Events back in their Version 15.0 patch notes for BTD6.
  • In Version 27.1, there was a bug fix where players are now given the correct increased trophy win for beating Tier 5 Elite Bloonarius. However, players who had beaten Tier 5 Elite Bloonarius prior to the update had to contact Ninja Kiwi manually to receive the 20 lost trophies from earning Trophies50 instead of Trophies70.
  • When Round 119 was made a fixed Freeplay round, it consisted of 2 (later 3) BADs. This is likely to build up to the Tier 5 Boss Bloons' appearance on 120.
  • Lych was the first original boss from the BTD6 Generation, and is not based off an appearance from Bloons Monkey City. It was also the only boss in this category until Phayze was added in update 38.0.
  • Nearly every time Vortex has appeared, it has been accompanied by increases in Bloon and MOAB speed.
  • Phayze was the first Boss to not be run 4 times in a row on its debut after Bloonarius. Dreadbloon replaced its second week due to Ninja Kiwi "[working] out some bugs and fixes", presumably relating to Phayze.
  • The first elite Lych and elite Phayze events were the only events to have over 5000 players, and thus are the only events to ever give out top 1% elite medals. This is because if there are less than 5000 players, it's impossible to get a top 1% without also getting a top 50 placement.
  • All the current Boss Bloons first 4 debuts are Beginners, with at least 1 week is being an Intermediate map.

The event still ended on the same time, August 19th 8:00 NZST. This event became only available on version 27.3 due to a bug that caused boss retries to charge the player twice, and if done when the player can only afford one retry, would result in negative Monkey Money.
  • Week 12's Boss Bloon Event has been stated on the October 8th 2021 blog to end early on a NZ Thursday. Specifically, it's 13 hours early, and would end on 8:00am NZDT (New Zealand Daylight Savings Time), which would translate to 7:00am NZST. At the time, New Zealand was in Daylight Savings. However, the starting time was 9:00 pm NZDT (or 8:00 pm NZST without Daylight Savings) on 9th October 2021. (Update 27.0)
  • Between Week 9 and 11 (bottom-and-top inclusive), there was a bug where the hero in the rules menu would show "99" of a single hero, probably due to adding in a fixed hero between Weeks 6 and 8. (Update 27.0)
  • The first week for Lych, Week 13, did not include Psi, likely because of bugs related to Psi causing the game to softlock during Lych battles. It is not known the exact bug in question. (Update 28.0)
  • Since Week 16, Benjamin and Perma-Spike have become mutually exclusively available in Lych events. This ended in Week 24. (Update 28.0)
  • In Week 22, only 2 Dart Monkeys were allowed, preventing usage of the Apex Plasma Master; this may have been done to promote usage of other Paragons, especially the relatively new Navarch of the Seas at the time. (Update 29.0)

  • Week 41's Vortex event had been datamined one day prior to its release. (Update 31.0)
  • Week 44's Lych event had a bug in which the Lych-Soul is affected by freeplay ramping, causing it to have 240% increased HP and 195% increased speed at Elite Tier 5, making it almost impossible to defeat the Lych-Soul. This also occurred for Weeks 47, 50 and 53's Lych events. (Update 31.0, undocumented by Ninja Kiwi). It was soon patched in Update 32.
  • Week 50's Lych event marked the first time when all Beginner Maps at the time (up to Scrapyard) had been used at least once in a Boss Event. Frozen Over was never used until then.
  • Before the release of the first Dreadbloon event (Week 73), there are 3 maps which Bloonarius, Lych and Vortex appear a least once. Those are being Cubism, Adora's Temple and Lotus Island. Additionally, Cubism still have the title of every Boss in every map from Version 31.X to Version 44.X
  • Week 55's Bloonarius Event was affected by a bug caused by the reworking of the continue system, which caused the Round 120 retry option to have no cost; however selecting it would immediately flag the player for cheating.
  • Week 79's Vortex Event is the first use of an Expert Map, Dark Castle. (Update 34.0)
  • Week 82's Lych Event is the first time where the starting round is at a later point, this being round 39 (Update 34.0)
  • Week 87's Vortex Event had a new Boss Bloon fight midway into the week, removing the MOAB health modifier and replacing the Boss Health modifier with Boss Speed, alongside other minor changes, because of bugs making the boss lose large quantities of health. • Week 194a, a Boss Event that began when Version 48.0 released, was released close to April Fools and featured a slowed Lych on Blons. The event lasted 24 hours.
