Hurls a boomerang that follows a curved path. Good range and pierce.
~ In-game Description

The Boomerang Monkey is a Primary-class tower that is released in the initial release of Bloons TD Battles 2. It is the Battles counterpart to the Bloons TD 6 Boomerang Monkey.

Boomerang Monkeys throw boomerangs that pop 4 bloons each and throws them every 1.2s. The monkey has a base range of 43. Boomerangs move in a curved fashion in a counter-clockwise direction from the monkey's right hand. Boomerang Monkeys also feature a Change Hands option to target priority that swaps hands, reversing the origin and direction of thrown boomerangs.

There are various upgrades that greatly improve the Boomerang Monkey's popping power, including ricocheting glaives, cybernetic enhancements for rapid throwing, and heavy straight-thrown boomerangs that can re-hit bloons.

The base price for Boomerang Monkey is $325. It is unlocked by spending Monkey Money150, unlocking all upgrades up to Tier 4, plus another Monkey Money1,500 (or $2.99 USD) to unlock all its Tier 5 upgrades.

Description[]

The Boomerang Monkey in Bloons TD Battles 2 is similar in appearance and upgrade progression to its Bloons TD 6 counterpart. However, all Boomerang Monkeys now have visible mouths in-game.

Similarly to its BTD5 counterpart, the Boomerang Monkey wears a jumpsuit. Its pattern is somewhat different, but more or less the same. Its official portrait depicts it throwing a boomerang with its dominant hand. The official portrait swaps direction if using Change Hands. When idle, the Boomerang Monkey may inspect its boomerang.

Path 1 generally contains upgrades leading towards the throwing of glaives, with each upgrade increasing the power of the boomerangs themselves into bouncing deadly glaives. Glaive Lord now surrounds itself with deadly glaives alongside throwable shredding glaives that pulversize blimps.

Path 2 generally deals with speed, providing the Boomerang Monkey with faster attacks on bloons. It also deals specialized damage bonuses to MOAB-class starting from Bionic Boomerang and above, and Turbo Charge provides turbotastic attack speed and increased base damage via its ability, topping up with Perma Charge with permanently attacks super quickly and does even more base damage while converting its ability into a great damage boost.

Path 3 generally deals with the element of throwing tough Kylie boomerangs that are thrown further, leading from |simply throwing further to hot boomerangs that pop bloons of any type to actual Kylie boomerangs that can be upgraded to deal even more damaging effects to the bloons, particularly MOAB-class on higher upgrades.

As with all towers in BTD6, only two paths may be selected for a tower at one time, and only one of the selected paths may be upgraded to third-tier and beyond.

Boomerang Monkey is a Primary Monkey.

Target Priorities[]

The base Boomerang Monkey uses the standard target priorities: First, Last, Close, and Strong. All of its attacks are dependent on its given target priority.

  • First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
  • Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
  • Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
  • Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.

Certain alternate attacks have a different set of target priorities:

  • Glaive Lord's orbital glaives are always set on Close by default, for the sake of pierce-consumption calculations.
  • MOAB Press's anti-MOAB kylies target any MOAB-class bloon except BADs, and are based on main targeting.
  • MOAB Domination's anti-MOAB kylies target any MOAB-class bloon, and are based on main targeting.

Boomerang Monkey has a unique target option "Change Hands", allowing the Boomerang to throw boomerangs from opposite angles in the opposite direction. This special target option is a set of alternating target priority buttons on the upgrade HUD; tapping on the button will swap position of the active button aligned with the corresponding Boomerang Monkey's dominant arm.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Boomerang Monkeys have a solid amount of pierce and have many upgrades suited for hitting various types and formations of non-Camo bloons. Boomerangs are thrown in an arc, which is very different from the Dart Monkey; instead of straight lines, most Boomerang Monkeys prefer a nice curve for the boomerangs to arc towards the bloons and maximizing pierce. Its late-game isn't particularly powerful, although MOAB Domination can assist at stalling and destroying Tight ZOMG rushes.

Use cases for Boomerang Monkey's upgrades often focus on utilizing its lower-tiers to pop early rushes while saving up to an affordable Tier 3 upgrade to carry early-game in the transition to harder rounds. Each Tier 4 offers defense that diverge their value across different mid-game stages, offering a mix of cleanup and support. Its Tier 5 upgrades offer further cleanup and DPS in combination with existing defenses.

Tips[]

  • Utilize Change Hands targeting to reposition a Boomerang's throwing arc, especially on mirrored maps such as Sands of Time.
  • Analyse and predict the position of the arc. Most cases prefer to have the boomerangs go against the grain, not with the grain.
  • Tier 2 and below upgrades focus much on popping groups of bloons for a moderate price with shots of moderate pierce. It helps to pair an upgraded lower-tier Boomerang Monkey with another tower (such as another Boomerang Monkey), to make the transition to Tier 3 smoother.
    • Transitioning into Bionic Boomerang usually involves 2-2-0 into 2-3-0, for a consistent piercing Boomerang Monkey.
    • Transitioning into Glaive Ricochet usually involves 2-0-2 into 3-0-2 or two Boomerang Monkeys with one 2-0-0 into 3-0-0; both methods work as a transition into the layer-penetrating crosspath.
    • Transitioning into Kylie Boomerang often involves 2-0-2 into 2-0-3 or two Boomerang Monkeys with the 0-2-2 into 0-2-3. 0-2-2 on its own has very low pierce and can be overrun by masses of eco bloons.
  • Each of its Tier 3 upgrades help the Boomerang Monkey excel during early stages of the game.
    • Glaive Ricochet excels at clearing long formations of bloons, as the ricocheting glaives bounce between bloon to bloon and have quite high pierce.
    • Bionic Boomerang's high attack speed makes it a DPS excel for the early-game, and is great for consistent shots in optimal spots that utilize that unique boomerang arc.
    • Kylie Boomerang has an alright early-game excel that works better along straight lines. Its rehitting mechanics helps catch faster bloons better.
  • Each of its Tier 4 upgrades provide a strong point for the mid-game. Many of its strengths are expansions upon their Tier 3 upgrades, although Super Monkey Fan Club is a large step-up from Triple Shot.
    • M.O.A.R. Glaives specializes at shredding bloons, perfect for cleanup and protecting against densely packed low-layer rushes.
    • Turbo Charge offers incredible DPS via its Turbo Charge ability for a rather low cost. This makes it helpful at clearing mid-game all-out rushes.
    • MOAB Press knocks back blimps with its special kylies, slowing progress of blimps, especially chunkier, slower types of blimps.
  • The Tier 5 upgrades each provide a mid-to-late-game advantage in different ways.
    • Glaive Lord extremely high pierce orbital glaives and generalized DPS makes it a cheap way to hard counter Tight Ceramics and clear out dense clumps of bloons. It is the only natural camo detector for the Boomerang Monkey, though it shouldn't be relied entirely for DDTs.
    • Perma Charge provides a tougher DPS increase alongside a permanent increase in damage.
    • MOAB Domination throws explosive boomerangs faster, doing a lot of general damage, stalling, and collateral damage all in one upgrade.

Version History[]

Balance Changes[]

Similarly to its Battles 1 counterpart, the Boomerang Monkey is a fairly popular and strong tower, specializing in grouped bloon popping power. It was considered to be a powerful tower ever since release, mainly due to how strong it is when paired with some form of Camo detection as well as its ease of use. It's value comes from being able to solo just about every rush in the game until round 26 onward, where DDTs and BADs come in and pose as a weakness.

A popular Boomer loadout is Boomer-Sub-Ice/glue, with Pat Fusty being the hero of choice in order to boost the power of MOAR Glaives, especially against well-layered mid-game bloom rushes, and knock back Round 17-18 MOABs. Another popular strategy is Boomer-Mortar-Farm.

  • BUFF 1-0-3 Kylie Boomerang: pierce bonus +3 → +10 pierce
  • BUFF 2-0-3 Kylie Boomerang: pierce bonus +3 → +12 pierce
There was no reason to ever pick the top crosspath option for Kylie Boomerang since the attack speed buff heavily outclasses the small pierce increase. This change aims to balance the crosspaths so that the superior crosspath is situational.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.1
  • BUFF Perma Charge ability increases damage by 8 → 10
While Boomerang excels as an early game tower and so we are conscious to not make its later tiers overly strong, we still want all upgrades to have some viability. Perma Charge is probably the weakest of Boomerang’s tier 5s and the other two aren’t particularly powerful either, so we think it’s well deserving of a buff.
~ Ninja Kiwi
4.2
  • BUFF MOAB Press: Special kylie pushes back MOAB-class bloons by 2 → 2.4 units
While MOAB Press is certainly a solid upgrade and incredibly useful for things such as stalling ZOMGs, it’s not quite as effective at slowing down the faster MOABs.
