Hurls a boomerang that follows a curved path. Good range and pierce.
~ In-game description

The Boomerang Monkey is a Primary-class tower that was released in the initial release of Bloons TD 6. The tower retains its role from the Bloons TD 4, 5, and Classic game generations, but has changed its name from "Boomerang Thrower" along with other significant changes. Like most Primary Monkeys, the Boomerang Monkey was featured in a teaser prior to the game's release.

Boomerang Monkeys throw boomerangs that pop 4 bloons each and throws them every 1.2s. The monkey has a base range of 43. Boomerangs move in a curved fashion in a counter-clockwise direction from the monkey's right hand. Boomerang Monkeys also feature a Change Hands option to target priority that swaps hands, reversing the origin and direction of thrown boomerangs.

There are various upgrades that greatly improve the Boomerang Monkey's popping power, including ricocheting glaives, cybernetic enhancements for rapid throwing, and heavy straight-thrown boomerangs that can re-hit bloons.

It costs $265 on Easy, $315 on Medium, $340 on Hard, and $380 on Impoppable if Cheap 'Rangs Monkey Knowledge is not active. Otherwise, if Cheap 'Rangs is active, the Boomerang Monkey costs $215, $265, $290, and $330 respectively.

Description[]

Similarly to its BTD5 counterpart, the Boomerang Monkey wears a jumpsuit. Its pattern is somewhat different, but more or less the same. Its official portrait depicts it throwing a boomerang with its dominant hand. The official portrait swaps direction if using Change Hands. When idle, the Boomerang Monkey may inspect its boomerang.

Path 1 generally contains upgrades leading towards the throwing of glaives, with each upgrade increasing the power of the boomerangs themselves into bouncing deadly glaives. Glaive Lord now surrounds itself with deadly glaives alongside throwable shredding glaives that pulversize blimps.

Path 2 generally deals with speed, providing the Boomerang Monkey with faster attacks on bloons. It also deals specialized damage bonuses to MOAB-class starting from Bionic Boomerang and above, and Turbo Charge provides turbotastic attack speed and increased base damage via its ability, topping up with Perma Charge with permanently attacks super quickly and does even more base damage while converting its ability into a great damage boost.

Path 3 generally deals with the element of throwing tough Kylie boomerangs that are thrown further, leading from simply throwing further to hot boomerangs that pop bloons of any type to actual Kylie boomerangs that can be upgraded to deal even more damaging effects to the bloons, particularly MOAB-class on higher upgrades.

As with all towers in BTD6, only two paths may be selected for a tower at one time, and only one of the selected paths may be upgraded to third-tier and beyond.

Target Priorities[]

The base Boomerang Monkey uses the standard target priorities: First, Last, Close, and Strong. All of its attacks are dependent on its given target priority.

  • First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
  • Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
  • Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
  • Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.

Certain alternate attacks have a different set of target priorities:

  • Glaive Lord's orbital glaives are always set on Close by default, for the sake of pierce-consumption calculations.
  • MOAB Press's anti-MOAB kylies target any MOAB-class bloon except BADs, and are based on main targeting.
  • MOAB Domination's anti-MOAB kylies target any MOAB-class bloon, and are based on main targeting.
  • Glaive Dominus's alternate attacks are based on those for Glaive Lord and MOAB Domination, respectively.

Boomerang Monkey has a unique target option "Change Hands", allowing the Boomerang to throw boomerangs from opposite angles in the opposite direction. This special target option is a set of alternating target priority buttons on the upgrade HUD; tapping on the button will swap position of the active button aligned with the corresponding Boomerang Monkey's dominant arm. The "Change Hands" target option was formerly limited to the "Ambidextrous 'Rangs" MK, but the target option had been fully introduced into the main Boomerang Monkey since Version 21.0.

Strategy[]

See also: Boomerang Monkey (BTD6)/Strategies

Summary[]

The Boomerang Monkey throws boomerangs that move in a curve and generally have a moderate amount of pierce. It can utilize its curved trajectories to hit bloons along the way, and has a special Change Hands targeting priority to alter the direction of the boomerangs. The Boomerang Monkey generally has better utility than the Dart Monkey, with many upgrades that are stronger against grouped rounds and multiple upgrades that specifically excel against MOAB-class bloons and Ceramics, but it has a glaring weakness to Camo Bloons.

Tips[]

  • In CHIMPS, 0-1-1 Boomerang can be afforded to reach a wide amount of track, especially in multi-lane maps.
  • Glaive Lord and Glaive Dominus has a good synergy with The Final Harmonic since it can trigger the damage-over-time effects they apply.

Additional Strategies[]

21.0
Glaive Lord's 502 gives no use over 520 with how the main attack currently works, so now 502 will additionally apply damage to the secondary revolving attack to target a different niche. MOAB Press spam is overperforming with a high 024 preference, so we are moving pierce from the base 004 into a 204 buff to give this choice some more high density round value.
~ Ninja Kiwi

  • NERF 0-0-4 MOAB Press pierce reduced from 300 → 200.

  • NERF x-x-4 MOAB Press price increased ($2,000 → $2,200).

Small price adjustment to push when you get this tower a little closer to when it's useful.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Glaive Lord costs less ($40,000 → $35,000).
24.0
Rotating Glaives aren't quite enough for higher tier rounds, and especially struggle against Fortified Super Ceramics so we have added a small bonus to combat these.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Glaive Lord rotating glaives now deal +2 bonus damage to Fortified Bloons.
26.0
To reduce some top crosspath dominance, have middle path stay the true speed crosspath and also provide a small buff to the base Boomerang, Glaive's attack speed bonus has been moved down into the base Boomerang Tower. Glaive Lord's innate lead popping has been removed to allow that meaning to remain in the crosspath along with price being reduced to compensate. MOAB Domination's explosion has had pierce increased to improve consistency on children Bloons.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Base Boomerang attack cooldown reduced from 1.42 → 1.2.
  • NERF Glaives no longer increases attack speed (formerly provided 0.85x attack cooldown, now provides none).

27.0
Due to large memory leak issues with Glaive Lord's stacking DoT which could not be resolved this upgrade has seen a rework to the DoT. Bionic Boomerang's base attack rate has been improved to compensate for recent reworking of the 2xx Glaives Crosspath
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • NERF Glaive Lord's DoT no longer stacks
  • BUFF Glaive Lord's DoT damage increased from 10 -> 100

    • Proof can be found here.
  • BUFF Bionic Boomerang attack delay reduced from 0.28s -> 0.238s
28.0
While the higher tiers are quite good, Bionic Boomerang does not feel like a strong stepping stone, and 052 is still mostly considered an inferior crosspath due to base tower damage already being high, so Bionic's ability increase to damage has been increased further. MOAB Domination's MOAB damage has been increased to give it a little more power than just stalling & finally we're tweaked up some of the numbers on Boomerang Paragon's damage to even out some parts of it that were not contributing effectively

  • BUFF Bionic Boomerang MOAB damage bonus increased from +1 -> +2

Just a cool/fun factor and "because it should" reasoning here honestly, not necessarily necessary but we think it fits.

  • BUFF Glaive Lord with Long Range Range now increases area of orbital glaives by +15%
Separately, we noticed the Glaive Dominus press knockback's actual explosion was only dealing a fraction of the damage of any other part on this upgrade, this combined with it pushing targets out of the tower's radius made it somewhat stally so we juiced up the power of this explosion significantly.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Paragon Press Attack: Explosion damage increased from 100 → 2500
  • BUFF Paragon Press Attack: Explosion bonus damage to boss → +5000
  • BUFF Paragon Press Attack: Fire DoT increased from 100 → 500

To buff Glaive Lords middle crosspath as a choice & utilize more of an attack that is mostly rendered useless by this tier, the base damage of the thrown ricochet attack has been increased. Bionic Boomerang’s price has been lowered to make this upgrade slightly more approachable, but Turbo Charge’s price increased as we’re ok with the higher tiers on this path. Finally MOAB Dom’s price has been reduced a little, while this upgrade mostly fits as an early freeplay support/carry this price buff will make it more affordable before then and slightly benefit saveup for the paragon.

  • BUFF Glaive Lord main attack damage increased from 1 -> 8
  • BUFF Bionic Boomerang price $1600 -> $1450

A small price increase to MOAB Press as combinations of this tower with others slows or spam with more of itself is very strong.

In many situations, especially moving into the deeper lategame, T4 MOAR Glaives didn’t quite feel like enough of a step up over the T3; leading on into the high ceramic cleanup of the T5 we have decided to introduce that ceramic bonus earlier at T4 along with allowing Glaives to overcome their long-standing weakness of being consumed by nearby blockers at T4 with MOAR Glaives ignoring all blocking objects completely. In efforts to cut down on unnecessarily high pierce for more reliable base stats Glaive Lord is having its excessive orbit pierce converted into high base ceramic damage bonus on the orbit & an added bonus to the main attack as well. When the Dart & Boomerang paragons were first introduced the more expensive T5 upgrades were not taken into account for balance as much as the raw paragon upgrade cost, in addition to this we have for a long time taken a no-MK approach to general game balance, however paragons have proven that they should follow the opposite of this ideal and be balanced around a max MK assumed approach, due to MK balance the Dart Paragon gains an incredible degree bonus, so we would like to counterbalance some of that advantage in the base Boomerang design by reducing the price greatly.

  • BUFF Glaive Lord Rotating Glaives bonus to ceramic increased 5 -> 8

  • BUFF Glaive Dominus price reduced $400,000 -> $325,000

Boomerang’s Ricochet buildup into T4 feels rough compared to many other options that exist nowadays, ignoring obstacles worked out as a strong fix for the T4 so we want to bring that down to the T3 as well along with some other general tweaks to bridge this gap. Glaive lord is too expensive for so low a single target tower so this is going down. We wanted to include a take on the Boomerang paragon’s range buff improving so much to apply to other primaries along with the buff synergy in the last update, but time didn’t quite allow for it.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF 3xx Glaive Ricochet now ignores obstacles
  • BUFF 3xx Glaive Ricochet price reduced from $1300 > 1200
  • BUFF 3xx Glaive Ricochet pierce increased from 50 > 60 (4xx same)

  • BUFF 5xx Glaive Lord price reduced from $32400 > 29400
  • BUFF Boomerang Paragon grants *0.9 rate to other primary towers including paragons

This part has to be included along with the Lych Soul rework with Paragons which is finally making it in this update after necessary delays. As Boomerang Paragon’s knockback hits so many times so quickly, we need to make it more reasonable when applied to targets that aren’t immediately destroyed.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • NERF Glaive Dominus anti-MOAB glaives knockback amount reduced 3 → 1

Long Range Rangs is increasing its benefit to be more meaningful of a crosspath choice for the range rather than purely the Red Hot Rangs. Permacharge as a very good T5 doesn’t feel like it needs to have a cooldown buff over the T3 given how small this benefit is. As mentioned above on the Dart Monkey, these Paragons are having their prices swapped around and Boomerang Paragon’s Orbit attack is having the fortification bonus damage removed as this number was so small it added no value to the tower anyway.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF xx1 Long Range Rangs range bonus increased 15% → 33%
  • BUFF 501 Glaive Lord radius increase from LRR increased 15% → 33%
  • NERF 050 Perma-Charge ability cooldown 40s → 45s
  • NERF Glaive Dominus orbit no longer deals +2 damage to fortified
  • NERF Glaive Dominus cost increased from $325,000 → $350,000

A few buffs for the Boomerang Paragon ended up being split up and spread out over a few updates, which resulted in repeated buffs which didn’t seem so necessary after the first, given the fairly high power level it had in v38, as well as suffering less from the bug fix than the Dart Monkey, it felt like it needed more general nerfs to justify any price reduction.

  • ??? [buff/nerf indeterminate] Glaive Dominus's overall Boss damage undetermined

  • NERF Glaive Dominus Press attack's final explosion base Boss bonus reduced (+5000 → +4000)

  • NERF Glaive Dominus Orbit attack radius reduced (60 → 50)
  • BUFF Glaive Dominus's Ceramic damage bonuses now properly scales with Paragon degrees when interacting with Bosses

Glaives are heavily focused grouped cleanup with low damage but high target count, however this scales poorly into MOABs & lategame so we're reworking Ricochet to a much cheaper but weaker starting cleanup with MOAR staying a significant upgrade over this. As Glaive Lord is a more heavily concentrated version of the previous tiers we are increasing its bounce distance to a map wide ricochet and increasing the orbital attack consistency.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Glaive Ricochet price reduced from $1200 to $600
  • NERF Glaive Ricochet pierce reduced from 60 to 30
  • NERF Glaive Ricochet bounce distance reduced from 90 to 60. Does not affect MOAR Glaives bounce distance, which remains 180.

  • BUFF Glaive Lord orbital attack cooldown reduced from 0.1s to 0.08s

Boomerang base price is being slightly reduced, already a decent start in many cases though this seemed enough to make slight game start changes and price it differently to other towers. The main attack for MOAB Domination has been scaled up as overall it is a good upgrade but the pierce on this main attack was previously unchanged from the T3. Glaive Lord’s main thrown attacks will now be able to bounce back again and hit the same target multiple times, this can be a very powerful effect so there is a cooldown on how frequently any single Bloon can be re-targeted.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Boomerang Monkey base cost reduced from $325 to $315
  • BUFF x-x-5 MOAB Domination main projectile pierce increased from 18 to 54
  • BUFF 2-x-5 MOAB Domination main projectile pierce increased from 27 to 81
  • BUFF Glaive Lord main attack can now bounce back to the same target, with a cooldown of 0.6s.
44.0
The MOAB Press top crosspath is the ‘better’ crosspath for most cases due to having more than double the pierce as well as a stronger knockback amount on a tower that most effectively uses high pierce, as this is one of the better support towers in the game we are reducing that superior crosspath without nerfing the lesser one to even this more.
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • NERF 1-0-4 MOAB Press knockback kylie pierce bonus reduced from +100 to +60, total pierce reduced from 300 to 260. Also affects MOAB Domination (400 to 360).
  • NERF 2-0-4 MOAB Press knockback kylie pierce bonus reduced from +220 to +140, total pierce reduced from 420 to 340. Also affects MOAB Domination (520 to 440).
    • Note: For a strange reason, in-game code shows that the pierce of 2-0-4 is changed to 340, not 320. Ninja Kiwi specifically listed the balance change as +120, which would make 200 pierce become 320 if true. However, in-game code and in-game testing shows that the pierce actually is 340.
45.0
With Glaive Lord being the big winner of recent balance, there is a price gap among towers that fill a similar gameplay role so instead of taking away too much power we're pushing its price up slightly to fit into that gap. We were unhappy with the recent MOAB Press nerf, so this is being undone for further review. Boomerang paragon use has dropped in use recently so we are taking the opportunity to lower its price.

Trivia[]

  • Boomerang Monkey's third path gives it an Australian look, seeing as boomerangs were used by the natives aborigines of Australia.
  • The Glaive Dominus Upgrade refers to the boomerang tower in the first person with the use of "my". This is the only tower and only upgrade in the game besides heroes that refers to itself in the first person.
  • The word Glaive usually refers to a polearm, not a kind of throwing weapon. The use of the word in Bloons is a reference to Science Fiction film Krull, where a weapon like the first upgrade path uses is called a Glaive.
