The Bloons TD 5 Era or BTD5 Generation (sometimes inaccurately shortened to BTD5) refers to games that use the same primary gameplay elements as Bloons Tower Defense 5. The three main games in this line are Bloons Tower Defense 5, Bloons Monkey City, and Bloons TD Battles as they share the same basic graphics, tower roster, upgrades and gameplay structure. Some include Bloons Super Monkey 2 in the Bloons TD 5 generation. Even though it is not a tower defense game, many of the enemies, characters, projectiles and upgrades are directly based off of BTD5.
The jump from the BTD4 generation to the BTD5 generation was perhaps the largest, in terms of sheer quantity, in Bloons TD history. Where previous generations slowly added towers and maps, and the following generation focused on refining gameplay mechanics and depth of original towers, BTD5, BTD Battles and Bloons Monkey City collectively brought hundreds of hours of gameplay through a wide range of towers, maps, secondary upgrades, progression systems, and more.
The Bloons TD 5 Era began in December 2011 with the release of BTD5 and is still technically ongoing as most of these games are still available and have an active playerbase. However, many players consider the release of Bloons TD 6 in June 2018 as the unofficial end of the BTD5 era as it marked a major shift in playerbase attention and Ninja Kiwi focus to the next generation.
