Bloons Wiki

Bloons Super Monkey 2 (stylized Bloons Supermonkey 2) is a game released by Ninja Kiwi on mobile devices. Unlike most games sharing the same name, this is not a port, and is more similar to a remake instead. It was completely altered from Flash, with improved 3D graphics, powerup crates, 100 levels, multiple playable characters, new bosses, and more. The only similarity is the core gameplay of popping hordes of bloons by controlling a monkey. The game was released on November 1, 2016, after a delay from the original release date, October 19. It is free to install, but was formerly $2.99 USD before March 6, 2019. It is available to iOS 8+ and Android devices, including Amazon devices.

Gameplay[]

Bloons Super Monkey 2 Mobile has very similar gameplay to Bloons Super Monkey 2 Flash. The player moves around a flying monkey by tapping and dragging on the screen. The monkey holds many weapons, all of which fire automatically at regular intervals to pop the bloons. With each bloon popped, it drops a unit of currency called Blops, which can be picked up by moving the monkey close to them. Blops come in different colors and are used to unlock various upgrades and abilities. Players are rewarded with different medals based on the amount of bloons they have popped in a level: "Bronze", "Silver", "Gold", and "Diamond". Bronze is required for passing any level, while Diamond is the hardest to achieve, as every bloon in a level must be popped.

New Features[]

  • The addition of the Lab, where players can access their upgrades, powerups, research, and view their monkey before battle.
  • New characters that the player can use in battle, including the "Ice Monkey", "Storm Monkey", and a secret monkey
  • Reworked powerup system involving crate drops that must be picked up manually in a level instead of purchasing powerups directly before starting a level.
  • Golden Bloon powerups no longer replace your monkey, instead they are "allies" that fight alongside your supermonkey.
  • Experiments that generate Blops for the player.
  • The addition of Blue Blops, which are used to spend on research.
  • The addition of Golden Blops, which yield 4x Blue Blops and 4x Red Blops each, and are 4x more valuable.
  • The addition of Green Blops known as Bloptonite" which first appear on Level 59, which upon collecting, slows movement speed depending on how many has been collected. Tagging out your monkeys drains away any bloptonite applied to the monkey.
    • Note that this is NOT a currency item and is a hostile projectile.
  • In-game Store, which gives the option of buying Blops and Power-Ups for real money.
  • 100 total levels, including new bosses, mostly different from its flash counterpart. Like its flash counterpart, an escape of the boss results in a game over, regardless of the number of medals the player has got in a level.
  • Endless Mine, an endless high score mode with different modifiers that awards golden blops and powerups based on ranking.
  • The ability to save files into your Ninja Kiwi account, backup progress and choose languages.
  • On iOS 10 and later, the availability of iMessage stickers, including ones unlocked from in-game achievements.

Boss Bloons and their stats[]

Notes: The storm cloud formation in Level 5 is not technically a boss, since letting it escape does not cause a game over, although it is treated in a similar way to the bosses. Mini MOABs have 500 HP and appear alongside bosses or on their own, but are not bosses themselves. The MOAB and BFB return in later levels as common enemies.

Powerups[]

Main article: Powerups (BSM2 Mobile)

Powerups are found by collecting crates that appear when specific bloons chosen at random are popped in each level. There are three crates per level and each contains a random powerup.

At the beginning of every level, a maximum of two powerups may be equipped to use during that level. Most are constantly active, but some are activated abilities that can be used only once. Since two powerups can be used simultaneously, try to select powerups that complement each others' effects. For example, combine Gold Rush and Hidden Treasure to farm blops quickly.

There are three tiers of powerups represented by 1, 2, or 3 stars, respectively. 1-star powerups are the most common and tend to be the least powerful, but options like Turbo Boost and Hotter Cooldowns can be extremely useful. 2-star powerups are uncommon (~25% drop chance) and have many powerful options, like Neva-miss Targeting and Bouncy Shots. 3-star powerups are rare (~5% drop change) but usually provide powerful farming capabilities, including Hidden Treasure, Gold Rush, and Lucky Charm.

Powerups can be sold for red blops in the Lab. Regardless of rank, 1-star powerups may be sold for 100 red blops, 2-stars for 300 red blops, and 3-stars for 500 red blops.

Upon successfully completing a level, powerups equipped at the start of the level and used gain 1 use toward ranking up. Each powerup begins at Rank 1 and can progress up to Rank 4, becoming more effective with each rank.

Bonus Powers[]

Certain bloons hidden throughout each level contain useful instant-use powerups and crates. When the bloon is popped, the item flies upward on the screen and gradually falls to the bottom. Items must be collected by touching them before they fall off the bottom of the screen. What bloons contain them are chosen at random.

Instant use powerups appear from bloons with a ? on them.

Endless Mine ONLY Bonus Powers[]

In addition, there are two powerups only available in the Endless Mine:

History[]

The preproduction of Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile is mostly unknown. It is possible that Altitude and other future updates for Bloons Super Monkey 2 were scrapped in favor of bringing said game to mobile in some form, although no there is no definitive information about that. The game files for Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile reveal that many entities from the original, including the "squid", "robo", and the scrapped Coconut Bloon, had incomplete entries that would eventually be scrapped. The file name for what would become allies still remain as "avatar", and there are sprites for Special Powers, such as Energy Signature as X-Ray Vision. This suggests that the mobile version was likely originally intended to be a port, before pivoting to a revamp of the game.

The first known announcement of a mobile version for Bloons Supermonkey 2 was on March 15, 2016, when Ninja Kiwi showcased the game on GDC, alongside Tower Keepers. [1] There is a trailer showcasing the gameplay accompanied by details about the game mechanics. One element that suggests that it originally started as a port of the flash version is that blops were still one singular currency, and collecting red/blue blops in a level would fill up a bar before the player earned another blop cash. By this point, many features from this announcement made it clear that this would not be a port. This was effectively a remake, the jump from 2d to 3d, 2 worlds with 25 levels each, 3 playable monkeys, and the rework of Avatars into supporting allies, was significantly different from the flash version.

Ninja Kiwi created a Facebook page for the game on 1 September 2016, alongside youtuber reveals about the game. While the game was originally planned to launch on October 19, 2016, Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile was delayed to 1 November 2016. In celebration of the upcoming release, Ninja Kiwi also gave away three Supermonkey plushies, alongside Ninja Kiwi themselves hosting a party at their office. The game was not delayed further and did launch 1 November 2016. It would go free to play on 6 Mar 2019, two and a half years after launch.

Trivia[]

  • Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile is the first mobile game in the Bloons series that uses 3D graphics.
  • The only BMC boss bloon not featured here is Vortex.
  • The sound effect of destroying a M.O.A.B Class Bloon was reused in Bloons TD 6.
  • Normal bloons, powerups, and projectiles are in 2d, but monkeys, environments, and MOABs/Bosses are in 3d.
    • Many MOABs / Bosses do not have a bottom half for their model. The exception to this are the eagle bloon wings, any MOAB part with a propeller attached, the yeti boss's legs, the Jellyfish Bloon, the Ceramic Golem, the Radactyl's ribcage, the rocks and drill of Dreadbloon, the magnets of the ZOMG, and every part of Tutankhabloon excluding its mask.
  • Calamari Blimp and Heavy Metal Bloon were originally planned bosses for future updates of BSM2 Mobile, as in the game files of 1.0 and a few versions after that, there are lines of code for unimplemented bosses, including the B.F.B, "bosssquid", and "bossrobo", with squid and robo also being the codenames of the third and fourth bosses of Bloons Super Monkey 2 Flash.
