Black Bloons are immune to explosions and contain 2 Pink Bloons!
~ Message when first encounting Black Bloons along with White and Zebra Bloons in BTD 5.

The Black Bloon is a Bloon that appears in all games of the BTD (and BSM2). It has a unique property - it is immune to explosions. It usually appears around rounds 20-25. When popped, it will split into 2 Pink Bloons (or 2 Yellow Bloons pre-BTD4).

Quick Answers

What makes the Black Bloon unique in the BTD games? toggle section
In the BTD games, the Black Bloon is distinct for its explosion immunity. It ranks higher than the Pink Bloon, sharing the same tier with White and Purple Bloons. It moves as fast as a Green Bloon and deducts 11 lives (or 9 in versions before BTD4) if it escapes. Upon popping, it splits into 2 Pink Bloons (or 2 Yellow Bloons in versions before BTD4). It typically emerges around rounds 20-25.

What happens when a Black Bloon is popped in BTD? toggle section
In the BTD series, the Black Bloon is a unique balloon black in color that appears around rounds 20-25 and is immune to explosions. When popped, it splits into two Pink Bloons, or Yellow Bloons in games preceding BTD4. Certain towers require an upgrade to pop Black Bloons. In BTD3 and BTD4, nearly an entire Black Bloon can be taken down by a single pile of Road Spikes, leaving a Red Bloon. In BTD5, a Black Bloon can be popped entirely by one spike pile.

In Bloons TD 6, Black Bloons are immune to explosive damage. Effective strategies include using Dart Monkeys or other sharp objects. Bomb Shooters are not recommended as they don't damage Black Bloons. The Ninja + Alchemist combo is a useful strategy for handling Black Bloons and other higher-tier bloons.

Details[]

The Black Bloon is one rank above Pink Bloon in Bloons TD games, on the same tier as a White Bloon or a Purple Bloon. It is around the speed of a Green Bloon and leaks 11 lives (or 9 pre-BTD4) if it reaches the exit. Unlike the bloons a Black Bloon spawns, it splits into two Pink Bloons (or Yellow Bloons prior to BTD4) when affected by an attack that deals 1 damage. More damage pops the Black Bloon into its descendents, following the multi-layer health system of many bloons in the game. The Zebra Bloon and Lead Bloon are both of the Black Bloon.

In most Bloons games, the Black Bloon is immune to all explosive attacks without special upgrades or support. This is especially problematic for Bomb Shooters, which naturally are weak to these bloon types without accessing powerful higher-tier upgrades.

Bloons TD Battles 2[]

Black Bloons can be sent starting from Round 6. Spaced Blacks cost $33 and give 1.6 eco per slot, each slot sending 3 Blacks with small spacing. Grouped Blacks replace the Spaced Blacks option on Round 10, and cost $75 for 4 moderately grouped Blacks, and gives 3 eco. The send disappears entirely on Round 26, where it is replaced with DDTs.

The default hotkeys for black bloons are: J, G, and D. The positions of Black Bloons changes based on round.

Natural Blacks start appearing on Round 10.

Black Bloons move at a base speed of 45, equal to 1.8 RBS.

Bloons Pop![]

Immune to explosions
~ Short description

Black Bloons appear in Bloons Pop! in a similar way to BTD6, except produces only one Pink child when popped by a one-damage attack.

Bloons Card Storm[]

Black Bloons appear as Rare Bloon cards in Bloons Card Storm. They cost 5 Gold to play, have 2 charges, 130 health, and a turn delay of 1. Unlike the mainline Bloons TD series, Black Bloons don't have immunities to explosives; rather, destroying a Black Bloon draws a card.

Players automatically unlock 2 Black Bloons by default, and a third Black Bloon can be crafted for 1500 Advanced Bloon Tokens.

Black Bloons do not have a Double Black Bloon variant, nor a Swarm or Nested variant.

Strategy (BTD, BTDB, BMC)[]

Comparison to a White Bloon[]

Black
  • It is immune to explosions, meaning it is immune to effects that more towers and upgrades have.
  • It moves 1.8 times faster than a Red Bloon (which is the same speed of a Green Bloon), and slower than a White.
  • They are encountered sooner in the games.
White
  • It is immune to freezing - It is immune to fewer effects that towers and upgrades have.
  • It moves twice as fast as a Red Bloon, and faster than a Black.
  • They are encountered later in the games.

It could be said that the Black Bloon was formerly more powerful than the White Bloon, and thus was once the most powerful Bloon. In BTD1, only Bombs could pop frozen Bloons, so you needed bombs to have any use for Ice Towers. Also, since BTD1 does not have Snap Freeze, the Ice Tower could not deal damage. Because of this, more people used Bombs back then, and thus more people were affected by the Black Bloon's immunity to explosions.

Trivia[]

  • In BTD3 and BTD4, a single pile of Road Spikes can almost take down an entire Black Bloon, leaving only a Red Bloon. In BTD5, one spike pile can pop a Black Bloon whole.
  • It is sometimes confused with the Bomb Bloon. Both deal with Bombs in some way.
  • In BTD1 and BTD2, because of its resistance to bombs, it is impossible to win the game using only Bomb Towers. In BTD3, BTD4 and BTD5, it is possible because of the Frag Bombs upgrade, and also, in BTD5, the Bloon Impact upgrade.
  • Strangely, Black (and also White) Bloons are small, yet containing two larger (Pink) Bloons.
    • However, in the flash version of Bloons TD 5, the Regrow property clears up this issue, as all Regrow bloons have the same size.
  • If the player upgrades a Frag Bombs Bomb Shooter to a Cluster Bombs Bomb shooter, the tower will not be able to pop Black Bloons anymore until upgraded to the Bloon Impact upgrade, because the bombs replace frags in the upgrade.
    • In Bloons TD 6, Cluster bombs and recursive cluster now produce fraggy explosions, essentially giving them normal damage type.
  • In BTD1, Black Bloons can not be popped at all while frozen because they are immune to Bombs, while frozen Bloons are immune to everything except Bombs, this makes it more powerful than the white bloon at times.
  • There are 4 Bloon types in the entire Bloons series that have multiple "parents" - Black Bloons, Ceramic Bloons (however, they also released from DDT on Bloons Monkey City, but with Camo and Regen properties) and Pink Bloons. The Black Bloon has the Lead Bloon and the Zebra Bloon and the Ceramic Bloon has the MOAB and the DDT.
    • There are 2 of them that have 3 "parents" - In Bloons TD 4 Black Bloons and Pink Bloons (whose parents are Blacks, Whites and Camouflage Bloons.
  • The Black Bloon and the White Bloon are the only Bloons smaller than the Bloons they spawn.
  • In BTD5, they can be popped by a Missile Launcher upgrade. This may be due to the fact that in the files, a 'missile' and a 'bomb' are set to two different things.
  • In Bloons TD 6, Striker Jones has an upgrade on level 5 that makes Black Bloons less resistant to explosives.
  • The Black Bloon makes a distinct "clonk" noise when hit by an explosion in BTD6.
    • There are no sounds for Black Bloon immunities in earlier games.
  • A Camo Black Bloon contains a very similar RBE to BTD4's Camo Bloon, with both releasing two Pink Bloons. This would also be the case for a Camo White Bloon.
  • When asked in the 21st February 2025 blog about the lack of Black Bloon immunity against explosions from Mortar Monkeys in BCS, Ninja Kiwi replied that it's due to balance reasons, and instead the Black and White properties translate into card draws.
